We absolutely loved this house! The location was great and the yard is to die for! We loved being in the cooler higher elevation. The house was very spacious with lots of space for our belongings. We had plenty of supplies of everything we needed (blankets, pillows, soaps, trash bags, kitchen items of all sorts, etc). We loved being able to borrow anything we needed for the beach too! There were plenty of toys, games, and movies to keep our kids entertained at night. I cannot say enough good things about this house and it's property manager!Tip: if the dehumidifiers won't turn on, it is because the water collection tank needs to be emptied (about every 8 hours or so). They work like a charm and controlled the humidity so well in the house!
I have stayed in many places around the USA and this was by far the BEST experience I have ever had! This house is a mazing! I brought my wife and three kids and there was plenty of room for more! It's just steps away from Volcanoes National Park and just a short drive some of the most amazing beaches Hawaii can offer! It's in the middle of the rainforest with mind-blowing views! We saw a variety of wildlife from our bedroom window! The neighborhood is very peaceful and Thom is a great and very attentive host. If you want to experience the best Hawaii has to offer you need to stay in this place!
Thom was very attentive and helpful during our stay. We had no issues and loved the space for our family.
The property itself is quite beautiful if you want to be a forest like setting. The house however is quite old and felt very dirty. The bedding, pillows, and extra blankets were gross. Extra blankets and pillow were left in the middle of the living room and they were pretty disgusting. The bottom living area and bedroom were dark, cold, and dingy. The downstairs bath had no privacy. The washing machine kept turning off on its own before it hit the spin cycle so we had to go to a laundry mat because our clothes were sopping wet. The kitchen was too small and layout made it impossible to move around. It was a constant traffic jam. The photos online make the house look a lot bigger and better than it actually is.
Great location. Plenty of space. Complete with all the amenities. Cleanliness was okay. Property manager was excellent and replied quickly with all questions/needs. Would stay there again.
The Mamane House is an amazing rainforest hideaway!!! Great for families big or small! Our family of three didn't even use the abundance of space downstairs, including the master bedroom. The two bedrooms and living area upstairs were plenty for us but should you have a large family or bigger group, this would be great also! Minutes from the National Park yet completely secluded in the rainforest. Large grass backyard, quaint picnic areas and beautiful rainforest plants on the property. 30 minutes from Hilo for all your beach needs. Speaking of beaches, make sure you check out all the beach gear downstairs! Chairs, coolers, snorkels! Check in/out was a breeze, would definitely recommend a stay at the Mamane House!
This property is in a perfect location if you're wanting to spend time in Volcano National Park. It is literally about 5 minutes down the road. The property was ready when we arrived, and we had no trouble accessing it. This place is quite literally right in the middle of a rainforest. We arrived after dark, and when I opened my car door, it sounded like the rainforest setting on a noise machine! It was so cool. Thom was a great host and answered any questions we had very promptly, both before and during our stay. Everything was nice and clean, with comfortable beds, plenty of hot water and lots of fresh towels. The kitchen was well stocked, and all the appliances were clean and ready to use. There were plenty of fans and A/C units, so we were able to keep air flowing and it was quite comfortable. The master bedroom is on the bottom floor, which appears to be a garage that was converted into living space. This is actually great because it's much cooler downstairs. There's a small step up into the master bedroom, so be aware of that -- it can catch you by surprise. Volcano National Park is spectacular, and it's worth spending a day or 2 there, depending on how much you want to see, and how much you're willing to walk. Start your day early, and there will be fewer crowds. You can pay for your park pass on your phone, so no worries if there's nobody at the entrance. We also went into the park after dark, and the rangers guided us to an easy, 1 mile round-trip route out to view the lava flow, which was an incredible thing to see. Absolutely worth the walk. Then we stopped at the Thurston Lava Tube so our kids could walk through it in the dark with flashlights, which they said was spooky and super cool. Hilo is not too far away, and there is stuff to do there as well. We went to Rainbow Falls, Akaka State Park, and there's also a small zoo as well. There are some good restaurants around Volcano Village. We had breakfast at the Crater Rim Cafe inside VNP. They have a breakfast buffet for $12 a person. We also had breakfast one morning at the Lava Rock Cafe, which was very good. We had dinner at the Thai Thai Bistro, and it was excellent. Delicious Thai food, and there are some Western choices on the menu as well for those who prefer them.
This is a great stay if you want to visit Volcano National Park. It was spacious and had all the things we needed plus things for the beach (We loved Henderson Beach. - Wonderful snorkeling). House could use some updating like shower curtains and faucets but we don’t need fancy. We felt it was a good value. Our local host was wonderful to corrospond with.
My family and I really enjoyed our time here and Thom was an amazing and attentive host. The location was perfect for checking out Volcano National Park, only minutes away by car (or jeep in our case), and the home had everything you needed and really nothing you didn’t. I couldn’t recommend this home and host enough. Stop looking and book it. ??????
Really enjoyed staying in this well equipped house and Thom was very helpful by answering all my questions. The check in process was easy and painless as well as checking out. The only things we would have preferred would be firmer beds. The surroundings were beautiful and the interior was clean. We appreciated not hearing the coqui frogs at night. ?
We loved being near the National Park. The house was very roomy and had all the beach gear we needed for snorkeling, etc.
This house is on a large lot right in a jungle paradise. The grandkids could play in the fenced yard under the many trees. I loved being close to the volcano national park. With the 7 day pass we could go in and out to enjoy different hikes, and don't miss going at night to hike and see the lava bubbling. The drive to Hilo was only 20 minutes and we enjoyed beautiful beaches to swim, snorkel and find sea turtles. The house was clean and had 3 rooms and 2 large family rooms to accommodate sleeping grandkids. The large washer/dryer was so convenient. We enjoyed barbequing in the backyard. We really enjoyed our stay and will be back to explore this island and use this house again.
This home was the perfect Hawaii home away from home. The yard is incredible, and our kids loved being able to go out exploring, looking for lizards, or playing. You are surrounded by amazing jungle. I was working remote during our stay (great internet speeds) and loved sitting on Lani listening to birds or seeing wild pigs run through the yard. The kitchen comes well stocked so you can choose to cook at home easily. The proximity to Volcano National Park allowed us to go in for short half-day trips, and experience all it had to offer. The close distance also allowed easy access in the evening to see the glow of the Volcano at night while it was erupting. The city of Hilo is about 30 minutes away but we loved the smaller size compared to the busy tourist towns. Plenty of family-friendly beaches, lovely snorkeling and also if you enjoy surfing there are some smaller surfer beaches nearby with excellent beginner waves. Far more to experience than we had time for during our stay. We will be coming back to this home in the future!
We loved our stay at the Mamane house. Our kids enjoyed exploring the jungle yard, and falling asleep to the sounds of frogs each night. The location was great for access to the national park, and the drive to Hilo/beaches wasn’t bad. We really liked how kid friendly location was with pack and play, high chair and sleep mats available. Also had fast WiFi. Husband rented a bicycle from town and was able to easily store it under front stairs.
All was expected, we did not spend a lot of time in the house, but it was good for our family. Thom was very helpful.
