Mohawk, Michigan
This is a three bedroom house master bedroom overlooking Lake Superior w a queen bed. Other bedrooms have queen and bunk beds are on kind of a squeaky frame. All bedrooms have linens and extra linens in master bedroom closet. Full bathroom upstairs stand up shower. Dining area also over looks Lake Superior, kitchen includes oven, microwave, toaster and coffee maker, kitchen has dishes pots and pans, silverware everything needed. Fire place in the living room which also overlooks Lake Superior has wood to feed it out on the porch feel free to have safe fires (always have screen over fire to prevent flying coals from starting unwanted fires)Our home is a camp though so it is old and not perfect. We have a DVD player. We have a lot of dvds to chose from. During the winter it can be chilly in the morning keep in mind the bones of this house is a log cabin when you hit the low temperatures we often get around here it is hard for the furnace to keep up w such a large home. Lake is a 5 min walk away. Check in is 3pm check out is 11am.
We also rent kayaks, we have 4 available 30each per day or 100 for all per day.
It's a very unique, old property. Master bedroom has a lovely view of Superior where I was able to watch the northern lights. There are some elements of the house that could use some TLC but nothing worth getting upset about. Several members of our group commented that it reminded them if their grandparent's houses. Classic Midwest. The owner didn't leave check-out instructions and I did not have any cell phone service in all of Eagle River so we weren't exactly sure what to do. There was also quite a bit of food in the fridge when we arrived, which was weird but nothing looked rotten so it didn't bother me. Overall, I was very happy with the rental and would rent again if I'm in the area.
Right from the beginning, everything was great. We had no problems finding the place or parking my 26ft trailer with toys. The view of Lake Superior is breath taking. The sunsets on the beach and yooperlite hunting were spectacular. There was plenty of space for us the spread out. The kitchen was adequate for the meals we cooked. We rode right from the house to the trails and then all over the Keweenaw. Communication with the owner was fantastic. We liked him from git go. We was very accommodating and willing to help with anything. Thanks for a great time.
Spectacular sunsets over Lake Superior, that's what you are paying for in this house, not the amenities. A nice walk down the road and over the river via a quaint bridge gets you to the lake and is spectacular - the beach is rocky, but this is lake superior and doesn't disappoint. Host, John, is very responsive even with a busy day job. He stopped by after we arrived to address some issues and is very kind and respectful. He responds well to the comments of previous guests and makes improvements based on those comments - which is nice. For the price, I expected a bit more from this house, no coffee maker or coffee cups and nowhere close to buy a cup of coffee, so hopefully John will purchase one and get a couple of cups for guests in the future. Unfortunately, this is a family owned home, so John isn't always aware when a sibling flops at the house before guests arrive as they had apparently done before us, so after 7 hours in the car, I had to change both of the sheets on the queen beds - bummer since those were the nice sheets. There were extra sheets on shelves in the master bedroom. House is kept tidy, aside from dust and a few cobwebs, I believe they clean as best they can before guests arrive. There is a washer & dryer and they work well. I would be willing to be someone lives in this house most of the time and moves out when the home is rented based on food in the refrigerator and freezer. The photo of the outside of the home is a few years old based on the amount of firewood outside and entrance into the house is through the garage, which has quite a bit of clutter. Beds were fine, we slept well. Towels were very worn, I fortunately brought my own washcloths. Very little cell service - it's the UP, what does one expect? So, I brought my own internet hotspot through Verizon and had success with the little bit of work I needed to do while visiting. If you want an escape, bring your own groceries (stop in Calumet) and beverages, and enjoy! Fitzgeralds is a great restaurant and the only one I found in Eagle River. Great location for visiting the peninsula - rent this place if you and your family can appreciate a dated, old home.
Broken windows, intolerable mold and cigarette smell, holes in the carpet, holes in the furniture, and holes in the walls. Porch had garbage, including cigarette butts. Heap of wood (barely cut tree limbs, etc.) on the side porch unsightly and messy. Large rodent trap on the porch. Ancient carpet. Detached closet door. Hanging wires. Vrbo had to get him to call us with check-in information. When we finally spoke he was rude. We were supposed to stay a week and left as soon as we could find accommodations elsewhere. Business owners we spoke to in Copper Harbor knew about this house being in bad shape. Capital One helped us get our money back because Vrbo did nothing they said they would. We offered to pay for 1 night and the fees. Vrbo should be more responsible and responsive. We will not use Vrbo again.
Great view of Superior from several rooms and porch. Excellent location for visiting the Keewenaw. Enjoyed learning about and feeling the history of the house. Took us two days to locate the internet password and found no coffee cups in house. Written guidance would be helpful.
Overall we enjoyed our stay. It was definitely more rustic than we expected, but it had it's own charm.
As a family... we were looking for a place “off the grid” (away from tourists/people) but near the cool weather, beautiful Water, small shops, and rustic atmosphere the upper Keewenaw peninsula has to offer. The yellow Eagle River house we stayed at was what we were looking for. The owner was good at communicating with us through emails and texts, answering any questions and giving us advice about places to see and do on our trip to Eagle River and area. The house is an older home with the rustic nature of the peninsula. It has a toilet and shower, well equipped kitchen and WIFI. TV worked with electrical needs throughout. If you need a newer house with new finishes, new furniture and is contemporary... this house is probably not for you. If you are used to roughing it a bit ...in and older cabin, it has a great view of Lake Superior with porch and is in middle of shoreline highway drive so it’s easy to get to Houghton, Calumet, and Copper Harbor. Pets are allowed as well which was a Big Plus and need for us. We would stay there again as it fit our needs.
If you know Eagle River or the UP at all, this place fits perfectly. Tons of memorabilia, older house, great view of Superior. It may not be the cleanliest or most comfortable place, but it is the UP to a T and worth staying at.
Easy to check in. Property owner was very flexible and helpful. House was just as shown in photos. Very large kitchen / dining area with newer refrigerator. New additions to this lodging are a large flat screen TV and internet service.
I really don’t even know where to begin. The whole experience was so terrible, I’m sure I won’t be able to cover everything. We did not receive any arrival instructions so I tried calling the owner 3 different times on the way to the property and was sent to voicemail, then told I couldn’t leave a message because the voice mailbox was full. I had no choice but to call VRBO, as we would be arriving at 8pm and we were worried we would be in a snafu until late hours of the night trying to get into the rental in total darkness with little cell service. VRBO also tried to get in touch with the owner to no avail. We continued on our way, hoping for the best and arrived to a home with the doors wide open. This was very unnerving as we didn’t know if it was left like that on purpose or if someone had broken in or if they forgot about our reservation. Really an odd situation to be in! Upon entry we were greeted by a garbage can that was full, a laundry basket full of dirty(we assumed) sheets and a note on the counter left from the last people that stayed?! Almost like the house hadn’t been touched since the last renters left. The whole house was very unclean and in rough shape. The shower was moldy, bathroom sink filthy. No sheets or blankets on beds. Extra sheets and linens were jammed into a closet in one of the bedrooms and it was questionable whether they were even clean. The closet doors were off the hinges just leaning up against the wall. We were unable to open any of the windows upstairs. I only wanted to make sure they opened in case of an emergency. Large hole in the floor upstairs/ceiling in the living room. I ended up receiving an email from the owner in the middle of the night. It said, “hope you were able to get in, I left the doors open because I had to work late.” In the morning we were walking through the back yard down to the beach and we were stopped abruptly by a neighbor telling us that the public beach was across the river! We were very confused so we started asking questions. He proceeded to tell us that the rental owner was an [explicit word] and that he (the neighbor) owned the property down to the beach so we had to go across the river to the public beach. He told us it was supposed to say this in the rental agreement but was never anything in the rental agreement about that. This place was so not worth how much we paid to stay in it. Never going back.
