Carson, New Mexico
The Woman, The Rabbit and the Moon Ranch is located in Carson, NM, at the top of the Gorge and adjacent to the Carson National Forest. With spectacular views of the mountains on three sides, and the City of Taos directly across the Gorge (with twinkling lights at night), you'll feel like you're on top of the world.
Sit back, read a book, paint, take a hike through the land looking for rocks, listen for the coyotes and elk, and enjoy more stars than you knew existed. Life on the Mesa, and our off-grid house, is life simplified and relaxing.
About the house . . .
It's all off-grid, and was built lovingly with all repurposed material by hand. It's a house that is sustainable and green, with all the modern conveniences of a regular house. You flip a light switch, charge your computer or your phone, run a load of laundry, all without worry of running out of electricity. The fireplace and wood-burning stove will heat the house to a comfortable 65 degrees in the winter, and it stays cool in the summer with stone and concrete floors. Point-of-use hot water heater means the shower heats immediately. Live green, while living comfortably.
There is a huge open-concept living room/kitchen area with a private sitting room stocked with books, dvds, games etc off to the side. Oriental rugs, Indian cabinets, original fine art and comfy couches create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The kitchen has a full-sized stove and frig (no microwave), both new models. The bathroom has a shower, sink and composting toilet. There are two bedrooms, one with a king bed and amazing views of the mountains. The second bedroom, upstairs, has a twin and a full bed. Although the second floor is a "kid-friendly" room, with a writing desk, games, etc., it's accessed by a wooden ladder staircase, so not suitable for small children (more appropriate for 6 and up).
It's unpretentious and artsy. And the perfect getaway for those who spent the day rafting, hiking or horseback riding; or those wanting to write, read, ,or just breathe in the smell of sage. Please note: we do not currently have a cleaning service. I am not charging a cleaning fee, but you must strip the sheets when you leave, put sheets and used towels in laundry room; take out trash; empty urine (per instructions); make sure all dishes are washed.
This property was exactly what we were looking for - scenic, quiet, and restful. We were able to disconnect for a couple of days and relax with a good book and coffee/hot chocolate. It was chilly but there was plenty of firewood and blankets to keep warm, along with the fireplace and gas heaters. We would recommend this property for anyone looking for an escape, but recommend a vehicle with some clearance. We were fine in a midsize 2-wheel drive SUV but a sedan would not have been able to make it through some sections. If wet conditions are expected a 4x4 would likely be necessary. All-in-all, a lovely experience!
Incredibly relaxing stay. We enjoyed the quiet location, the stars were amazing and the creativity & art inside and outside the house was fun to discover. We hiked the rim of the canyon & spent a lot of the time being lazy in the hammock. I don’t think I’ve allowed myself to relax that much since I was a teenager. The off grid aspect gave us a good perspective to carry forward - very thankful that they opened such a special spot for all of us to enjoy.
We had a great time at the house and the Toas area. Truly beautiful.
as they say, it's off the grid, but for us that was a selling point. solar electricity, rainwater cistern with on demand hot water for shower, fireplace and stove with plenty of wood. incredibly comfortable house, felt very homey, million dollar views of the surrounding mountains and sagebrush, complete peace and harmony. just far enough away from everything without being too far. we would have loved to stay longer.
