Layou, Dominica
Unique property on the beach and next to the Layou River, the largest river in Dominica, in the center of village. Truly a Dominican experience. Local eateries next door and across the street. One bedroom house with a double bed and full futon in living room 1 bathroom w/hot shower downstairs with wireless internet. Open air living space on second floor. w/kitchen, shower & bathroom w/hot shower, hammocks, hot tub, loungers. Safe, colorful neighborhood. Right on the beach. Off street parking. We have local shops across the street and next door where you can purchase local meals. Mary will even save you dinner if you ask her to when you leave in the morninig. We are also a fishing village so fresh fish may be available daily. We recommend a rental car, but the local bus service runs through town, listen for honking horn from bus drivers or walk 5 minutes to the main road and catch the next bus.
It was exactly what it said. Trees grew a little bigger since the pictures. We enjoyed buying food ,snacks and coffee from the 2 small businesses by the house. It is centrally located. You had to drive to most other places, but even at a hotel you would too. Owner was great at keeping in touch and helping us with information we needed for the island. A great price too!
This is, rightly, basic accommodation with first world appliances and airconditionng; it is pitched about right because accommodation should not be ostentatious in this locality. The set up it helps get one into the groove of the village perfectly, especially watching sunsets from the upper level.
If you want to insulate yourself from authentic afro-carribean culture don't stay here. If you want to dive in and meet extraordinary locals, try their food and drink, and explore their beach, this is your place. It's also central to the west coast, making travel to Cabrits in the north or Soufrier in the south both very reasonable day trips. The house itself is very comfortable and clean. The kitchen is fully functional, making meal prep easy. We loved the second floor balcony with the classic view of the Caribbean sea and palm trees. It's a great place to sit and have dinner in the open air, swing in the hammocks, and look at rainbows. The village is active and full of sounds until 9ish then picks back up around 7ish. It's real. Not a tourist set. Lastly, Patti was a super host. She was very helpful every step of the way, hooking us up with great experiences too. I felt like I had a family member in dominica!
Very wonderful small fishing village in rural Dominica. Just as one would expect there are roosters and cars honking, motorcycles zipping by and people on the street talking laughing and cranking music into the night. If you want quiet and seclusion try another location. If you want authentic island life, wonderful experiences meeting locals and experiencing life on the island this is perfect. The house is not right on the beach, but only a couple minutes away. The beach is classic Dominica, meaning dark sand and some trash... we drove to snorkel and hike everyday, which is an experience in itself, but the island is small and getting around with a rental car is easy. The pullout bed was fine for my two young boys, but a more demanding adult might be disappointed. The kitchen was basic but fine, with a second wet bar and smaller fridge upstairs with a hotplate. We spent as much time upstairs as possible, cooking and hanging out, when not out on adventures. Overall, a wonderful experience, on a very little developed island. Hope to return another year!
We loved the location of this property. It is located in the middle of the town. The property manager took us to some of the adjacent businesses and introduced us to what is available. We LOVED the rooftop deck and spent a lot of time there. The property has a beautiful view. The owner was also very accommodating and helpful with information that we asked for. Thank you for a great experience!
It was soooo nice to live in a real life village... Probably as close as one can get as a tourist. A great experience.
This house definitely was the highlight of our stay in Dominica. Such a great place right on the beach. So many amenities. Comfortable bed, nice jacuzzi, great view from the upper deck. Patty was a great host and gave suggestions when we needed some go sightseeing. She was easy to reach. Great place! Awesome view. Super clean. Patty's property manager, Scott, came by the first morning to make sure we were happy and comfortable. Be sure to eat next door at Mary's for local food. Sandy's across the street is great for a quick fried chicken and some bakes. Just a great place.
Great place in a small village where the people were extremely nice and made us feel safe and part of the community. View of the ocean from the outdoor living space was great! Fairly central location so didn't take a long time to get to anywhere we wanted to go. Overall nice place,
The beach house was an interesting place. The top floor was wonderful. It had a nice view of the ocean with a constant breeze. It was great to be able to cook up there. The ocean was only a minute walk away. It was nice to be so close. The issues we had were with the sleeping situation. The loft got hot and stuffy and a couple of small windows didn't help. If you want quiet, this is not the place. The area was very noisy. Neighbors started playing music loudly and early and it continued into the night. Roosters started crowing at the crack of dawn. We could hear people talking in the streets until late. It was fun to mingle with the locals, but be prepared for noise. If you aren't used to it, it makes sleeping difficult. Overall, we did like being there.
My stay in Villa Verde Salisbury was fantastic! The home is very well taken care of and provided everything I needed – ample space including living room and kitchen, laundry and a beautiful view and ocean breeze to top it off. The owners have a very nice patio with hammocks perfect for napping. I would recommend this vacation rental to any single or couple coming to the beautiful island for adventure and relaxation.
