It is located in a lovely community on the Potomac River with four beaches, tennis and pickleball courts, a pool, and a very laidback vibe. Nearby playground too! Safe and quiet. The coastal area is called The Northern Neck, and is dotted with cool small towns and full of lovely people and fresh seafood, in particular oysters. It is an oasis from busy city life.
Montross itself had a rebirth around 2015, and is now a vibrant arts community with galleries, shops, and friendly folk. Be sure to stop and snap some Polaroids in front of the wooden LOVE sign. There's another LOVE sign further down with a nautical theme. Keep your eyes peeled for beautiful murals throughout town.
Be sure to get your history on and visit the Courthouse, the Westmoreland museum and all the historic sites in town. There are also several festivals yearly and, occasionally, a big flea market behind the Courthouse.
The next closest town is Colonial Beach, about 20 miles north (great stopping place if coming from that direction)and it's very fun to explore there. It's a quintessential small beach town with lots of personality. The Tiki Bar on the River is not to be missed, and there are many shops, cafes, and restaurants to explore.
Further south in the Northern Neck are the quintessential coastal towns bounded by the Potomac and the Rappahannock, great stopping places if coming from Richmond and points south, and close enough for a day trip. The quaint coastal town of Irvington described by Southern Living Magazine as the swankiest coastal town in Virginia. Great shopping and restaurants. Small town friendly vibes.
We also recommend exploring the larger town of Kilmarnock, and also White Stone, which boasts a restaurant owned and operated by a local guy who trained at the Inn at Little Washington. It's called Adrift and it's a must.
Getting Around:
You need a car. Preferably a vintage VW Bug, but anything will four wheels and a motor will do. Bring bikes though, for cruising the community and pedaling over to one of the beaches or the tennis and pickle ball courts! (Shhh, we didn't have pickleball back then, but dude, it's so rad you should def try it.
