Milford, Pennsylvania
The historic stone Stable House is located on a historic 20 acre property adjacent to a forest with waterfall. It is a 2 bedroom, one-bath residence with large front porch, walled garden with swimming pool and adjacent forest with trails. There is another house on the property, The Foresters Cottage (VRBO #430708), also rentable, whose renters, if present, may also use the pool.
The Stable House living room is cozy with plate glass window, recessed bookshelves and fireplace. Full kitchen includes dishwasher and appliances. This is a great family house 1.5 hours from Manhattan.
The Stable House was once a part of the historic 19th century French country estate owned by the Pinchot family. The original property included the Stable House, the adjacent Forester's Cottage (still in use and rentable for larger groups) and Grey Towers, a 43-room turreted chateau designed by Richard Morris Hunt that is now an environmental research center and museum. The Stable House overlooks a two-acre walled garden with its Italian urns, box hedges, fruit trees, open lawn and beautifully landscaped swimming pool for guests to use, tucked discreetly out of sight. Beyond the far side of the garden wall lie the forested hills & valleys of the Poconos, a half-mile from the charming, historic town of Milford, Pennsylvania and the Delaware River.
Securely situated behind a wrought-iron electronic gate, the Stable House and Foresters Cottage combined provide a unique setting for family gatherings and reunions, corporate retreats, film-making, writers, artists, environmentalists, history buffs, yoga retreats, and many other possibilities.
An 1/8 mile walk from the Stable House into a hemlock forest brings you to the only privately owned waterfall of its size on the east coast . This 50-foot waterfall courses through a cathedral of ancient moss-covered cliffs carved by a mountain stream. No swimming is allowed in the stream. Guests must sign a liability waiver to enter the forest.
The Stable House sits on a privately owned 20-acre property that includes exclusive access to these features. Only 70 miles from New York City this property resonates with history and a quiet, natural grandeur.
The adjacent property, Grey Towers, now owned by the U.S. Forest Service, has extensive landscaped gardens and a beautiful ground floor museum dedicated to Gifford Pinchot, one of America’s first conservationists and a former Governor of Pennsylvania. You will feel like a 19th century guest of the Pinchots as you stroll through the beautiful gardens and grounds of Grey Towers. Visit the “Finger Bowl”, a wisteria-covered dining table where the guests floated the food on wooden bowls as they sat around the bluestone edge. You can take a tour of the original mansion, beautifully restored to its original state in 2001.
Milford, PA is a former mill town founded on the Delaware River in 1796. It attracts visitors for its fine dining,, inns, antiques and galleries. Atlantic Magazine called Milford “the prettiest county seat in America.”
The property and house are just as it shows in the listing. We loved the location, charm of the house, and beauty of the property.
The property was just as described. Very clean and well maintained. Beautiful grounds. Our host was extremely responsive especially when we experienced strange hiccup early in the morning. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.
It was a very special weekend in beautiful surroundings. There is plenty to do on the property including the bonus of a beautiful waterfall a short hike from the house. Everything was well appointment and thought out, and this was simply a wonderful place to relax, and get together with friends. There is also plenty to do in the surrounding areas especially if you like hiking and water sports.
The staff for wonderful. the property was beautiful. the history facinating.
Great little cottage with beautiful views and right next to lovely Grey Towers. We had a great time!
This was a really special place to stay. The location at Grey Towers was really special. We all felt very fortunate to stay at such an historic property and learn more about its unique history.
We had such a relaxing time! The Stable House was the perfect late summer retreat. Pool was perfection, the falls were breathtaking, and the history and beauty of Grey Towers was magical. My teenage boys and I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the grounds, and were enthralled with the history.
What a fantastic and unique stay! In addition to positive reviews of others (no ac - no problem, no tv - we brought our own with Amazon Prime and movies on external hard drive), what our family REALLY appreciated was that the extra needed household things were exactly where one would expect to find them (specifically extension cord, screwdriver, scissors). The house is well-stocked with most everything a family would need on vacation - we did not have to buy anything except food, plastic containers, and ziplocks. The closest supermarket Key Foods was an amazingly pleasant surprise for us too since it has a lot of Russian/post-USSR countries brands that you would find in Brooklyn - definitely a plus for the Slavic Poconos community. I did not see it in the comments here, but the trail to the waterfall has 2 entrances: one closer to the top for waterfall view, and another closer to the bottom with access to water (no swimming!). The trails are in the middle of the woods, so if you have a foraging expert with you, you will enjoy plenty of edible mushrooms (boletus/masljata) like we did. Prepared them fried with potatoes twice during our stay. The only minor downside was that the house is on the dusty side. No problems for most, but one person in our group is allergic to dust. During our 5 day stay only 2 Claritin 24-hour pills were needed - very manageable. Overall, 5 star vacation!! Thank you Tammy and Pinchot family!
As other reviewers have noted, the Stable House is a special place, in a wonderful setting. Built in the late 19th century, it is within the grounds of Grey Towers historic site, with private access to a large walled garden and pool, as well as direct access to the USDA managed area around Grey Towers. It is an ideal place for privacy and quiet in a country setting, but it is still close to the delightful small town of Milford, with shops and restaurants. However, anyone renting this house should be aware that although the house has been updated at various times in its history , it is an old property and a family house. At times, charming, quaint, and eclectic furnishings can seem worn and tired. The small kitchen has new appliances, but the countertops and cupboards and pots and pans within them have seen better days. A drip coffeemaker would be a welcome addition instead of the old French press., as would an ice cube tray. As long as one comes with the right expectations, these are, however, relatively minor inconveniences, weighed against the uniqueness of the property. Two other points: the pool and garden are shared with the other house on the property. It is some distance away from the Stable House, but there is not complete privacy. Also, renters should ensure that they have received the proper code to access the gate to the property after hours. The confirmation email we received had the wrong code, leaving us locked out when we returned from dinner our first night. Fortunately we were able to reach the property manager by phone and obtain the right code.
This was our second time staying at the property. It’s beautiful and the grounds are gorgeous. We really enjoyed the pool. Will definitely be back.
