NOTE: Due to its location on the main road connecting the north and south ends of the island, there is a fairly steady stream of cars traveling past the house at 25 mph. Although a long fence and shrubbery between you and the road create a nice sense of visual privacy, some background road noise is to be expected.
Despite being on on one of the Island's main routes, the house feels fairly secluded due to the large yard and surrounding trees. The front bedroom does get some road noise, though I didn't find it to be an issue and the beds in both rooms are comfortable. Being centrally located, nothing on the island is too far away. The only drawback is that parking in Bar Harbor itself can be tough depending at certain times. At least 2 of Acadia's carriage road entrances are also within a 15-20 minute bike ride.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Somes Harbor House. Great central location, very comfortable and charming house. Loved the back deck and our dog enjoyed it as well. There was an apple tree on the corner of the property and we saw a buck one morning enjoying the fallen apples. Short drive to all the great adventures on MDI. There was some street noise but was fairly warned in the listing and homeowners had solutions. A+ experience.
We had a great time staying here, great location for easy access to acadias main park and remote locations! Our pup loved the enclosed yard!
Absolutely enjoyed our stay at this house. The property was very clean, and had many supplies to make it feel more like home. The information binder was very helpful for settling into the area. Great central location a short drive from shops, restaurants and Acadia. We would not hesitate to stay at this property again if we are in the area.
It was a good location to all the park. A very cute old New England home. There was a problem with a window A/C unit still in place which was causing cold air into the bedroom, however as soon as I told the property manager they came and took it out. Very fast response. We really appreciated it.
My husband, 9 year old golden retriever, and myself stayed 6 nights after a long drive from WI. This home has well appointed kitchen - I made egg skillet every day before hitting the trails and found all the cookware I needed and even the salt & pepper. We saw deer in the backyard and enjoyed the large deck. There is a small completely fenced area in the front of the house for a small dog that I didn't remember reading about it in the description so it was a nice surprise on arrival. The backyard is large, more suited for a 65lb golden retriever, and defined with a nice tree line for the most part, so he could be off-leash, with supervision, like he's used to at home. He does have strong recall. The traffic noise at night, as noted in the description, even using the white noise machine was distracting. I think of myself as a hard sleeper, especially after a day hiking, but the road noise would wake me. The location got us to everywhere we wanted to be in 15-20 minutes - trailheads, dinner, groceries. I wouldn't have known it before visiting the area, but If availability and price wasn't an issue for the next visit, I'd prefer something closer to Bar Harbor and more quiet, but, overall, we had a great first visit to MDI and were very thankful for this rental.
The home was very well kept and exactly as described in he reviews I read online. We would definitely stay there again.
The house worked well for our family of four. The road is a little noises as some other reviews noted but we really like the location which was convenient to both South Harbor and Bar Harbor. The location also provided convenient access to hiking trails on MDI. I would definitely consider staying here again.
We go up to Acadia to have quiet environment, hike and walk the many trails. This property is in the perfect location for access to both the East Side and West Side of the island as well as to Bar Harbor. For us, the location was quite noisy since it is on the major road going down the West Side of the island. The property managers did, however, have a white noise box so the sound of this traffic was muffled. It was a very pleasant clean house; bright and airy with lovely sunrises. It was very handy to restaurants, markets, shops. and all trails. Nice deck and grill for outdoor eating. Pet friendly. I would go back to this property but would prefer a quieter location. We enjoyed our stay very much.
We had a great stay at Somes Harbor. The house was very nice and had everything one would need for a stay. We liked the location: 10-15 mins from Bar Harbor and a short drive to some of the other Harbor towns. Our only real complaint is that we were under the impression that this home was off the beaten path when in fact it is on a very busy road. At night, we had to run a fan to drown out the traffic noise. This may have been an error on our part but just were not aware the house literally sat ON a busy road. Other than the noise, we had a great stay! Thank you!
