Elkton, Virginia
Tucked away, full vacation home located on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. 15 mins from National park, 10 mins from Massanutten, 20 mins from JMU. Part of a 70 acre, historic farm est. 1780's. Private river access, with boat landing, and 1/2 mile of bank fishing and wadable water. Walking trails through hay and wild flower fields and along riverbank. Family and pet friendly, with spacious backyard, and large firepit. Fully furnished. Hosts live on the farm, and can assist any time.
This property is a unique house because it is part of a larger farm that guests have full access too. This house sits on 2 acres of a 72 acre property that dates back to the 1780's. The main house on the property is listed on the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Guests will have access to all of our mowed walking paths, wild flower patches, traditional gardens around main house and river walking paths. Another unique feature of this listing is its access and to 1/2 a mile of privately owned riverbank, and its own secluded river access and picnic location.
The South Fork of the Shenandoah river is one of the streams listed in the book “50 places to flyfish before you die”. The Shenandoah is famous for its
smallmouth fishing but it also has a variety of different warmwater species including several species of sunfish, rockbass, catfish, carp, largemouth bass
and even muskies.
One of the major challenges of wading the upper river is gaining access to wadable water as the river flows mainly through private land. The majority of public access points are at state owned boat landings and are
located in deeper pools where wading often isn't an option.
Our property offers access to over half a mile of private access shoreline that under normal water levels is one of the best wadable sections of water in the upper river. Once you're in the river, it opens the door to well over another 1⁄2 mile of very wadable water.
If you're a kayaker , the Island Ford boat ramp is three miles upstream of us and the Elkton landing is four miles downstream. Both of these floats make for a great 1⁄2 day float. For anglers looking for a guided trip, we work
closely with Mossy Creek Fly Fishing, located in Harrisonburg, Va. Not only are they the top flyfishing guide service in Virginia for trout, smallmouth and muskies but they also welcome spin anglers on our river floats. All equipment and tackle are included along with drinks and lunch.
This house is really dirty. There is mildew in the bathroom and pink algae at the bottom of one sink. There is unpleasant smell in the house either from drainage or pet litter. After staying there for 1 night, my husband had allergy. Inside the fridge is really dirty and there is crumb from previous guests on the dining table. I got bitten by something the second night in bed- hope that's not a bedbug. There is no Kleenex or bottled water provided. Also, the bathroom to the main bedroom doesn't have hand towel to dry hand. The property manager is not very responsive. He did not reply to my email and phone calls. He only replied after I left message on Vrbo.
Cool place well suited for family. Nice mountain view and close to necessities. Nick was helpful and responded in a timely manner.
We had a great experience at this Shenandoah getaway. The river was accessible and we skipped stones before making a wonderful fire in the pit and grilling burgers outside. A large back yard gave room for the dog to run around. The inside was spacious, clean, well decorated, and pet friendly. We had a fun evening playing games and eating popcorn. Jack was very concerned about us having a good time and even called to alert us someone had left a bad review and didn't want it to disturb our confidence. It didn't as we had a great time. Were able to meet Jack as we were leaving. He was friendly and we would stay here again if in the area.
Our group enjoyed staying here for our short weekend getaway. Close to Massanutten and Harrisonburg with great restaurants and shopping. The house was absolutely gorgeous with wonderful features. Kitchen was beautiful and appliances were very easy to use. The view of the mountains was gorgeous and we enjoyed sitting outside on the back porch with our morning coffee. Comfy beds, comfy couches, great internet, lots of space, and very clean! Our group loved using the fire pit outside as well as the basement downstairs for game night. The house had some wonderful board games provided! Jack was a wonderful host and answered all our questions. He made our stay so easy and stress free. We definitely would love to stay again and will be recommending to our friends/family!
Close to a river, plenty of land for the dogs to run around, lol very comfortable and beautiful home overall. Owner kept in communication and answered all of our questions. Definitely recommend!
My family and I stayed here for a few days while taking a fly fish course with Nick from Mossy Creek. Couldn’t have asked for a better stay. Perfect location, easy access to the river, great host. Jack was 100% accommodating during our whole stay. Great getaway.
We had a blast - the house is perfect and very well equipped (and beautifully decorated) and there’s so much great stuff to do! The river is gorgeous and Jack was kind enough to drop some of our group off up river so they could kayak. Close enough to drive into Harrisonburg to eat, but far enough out to enjoy the beautiful scenery and privacy! Will be returning
Wow! What a nice house and property! Jack was a great host and very accommodating. It's a perfect place for a quiet get away. We will be back!
