Amherst Junction, Wisconsin
Our house sits on a half-acre lot located on a quiet street that rings 65-acre Sunset Lake. At 55 feet, this NO-WAKE lake is one of the deepest in Portage County, and the water quality is excellent. (Note that our Sunset Lake is not the lake with the same name located in the Chain of Lakes. However, from our house it's only a half-hour drive to the Chain of Lakes.)
The split-level, 1,900 sq-ft house is cozy and comfortable. A master bedroom, smaller bedroom, and a bathroom are located on the top level. (One room on this level is not available to guests.) A sitting area in front of a fireplace (available for use during cool and cold months), a foosball table, a bedroom, and a bath are located on the lowest level. On the main level are the dining area, living room, kitchen, and laundry room with washer and dryer. The kitchen is fully equipped, including stove/oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, cooking pots and utensils, and dishware. Bath towels and bed linens are supplied. There is an attached 2-car garage, central heating and central air, WiFi, Smart TV, and local and long-distance phone service.
From the dining area, step onto the large deck ready for outdoor cooking and eating on the wooden table and chairs and propane-tank grill. The deck looks onto a yard with a few mature trees that slopes down to 100 feet of lakefront. (The yard can be reached by going down stairs from the deck, or by walking on either side of the house.) An aluminum dock at shore level is in place from approximately April through October -- no stairs to climb to get onto the dock. Swim off the dock. You can get into the water from the shore (although the bottom isn't sandy) to the right of the dock. We keep the shoreline to the left of the dock in its natural state. There's good fishing, including walleye, panfish, bluegill, and trout. A fire pit is in the back yard. (Note that, per State regulations, due to oak wilt and pests, firewood from a source farther than 20 miles from our house can't be brought in. You can buy firewood from our manager at a reasonable price.)
SUMMER:
Enjoy swimming (either off our dock, or at the sandy beach at the county park across the lake located a few minutes' drive or 15-minute walk from our house), fishing, canoeing, kayaking, standup paddleboarding, and small-boat sailing on this no-wake lake.
LATE SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL:
RIDE BIKES -- on the low-traffic roads in the area.
HIKE -- on trails in the area, including the Ice Age Trail, located at the New Hope Iola Ski Hill (about 5 miles from our house).
You can also ride bikes and hike on the extensive Green Trail system in Stevens Point, located about 18 minutes from our house; and on the 29-mile Tomorrow River Trail (trailheads located within 10 miles of our house; state pass required for bicycles).
WINTER:
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING-- The Iola Winter Sports Club (open to non-members) is located about 5 miles from our house.
SNOWMOBILES-- About one-half mile from our house is a trunk trail that leads to a major snowmobile trail going all the way to Green Bay. (Note that you have to trailer your snowmobile for that half-mile.)
SNOWSHOEING-- on the nearby Ice Age Trail and in other close locations.
ICE-FISHING-- on Sunset Lake.
(Winter accessibility: The house is on a township road that is plowed regularly, and the sidewalk and driveway are cleaned after any substantial snow.)
Please note that NO HUNTING IS PERMITTED ON OUR PROPERTY.
Many annual events are held in the area throughout the year--such as the Iola Car Show in July, the Energy Fair in June, the Iola Winter Carnival in February, the Waupaca Festival of the Arts in August, and the Hidden Studios Art Tour in October. The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MERA) holds workshops in the area.
Central Waters Brewing Company, located in nearby Amherst, brews a variety of great beers. Great gelato and pizza can be had at The Millstone in nearby Iola (seasonal offerings; please check their website). A list of many other places to eat and drink is found in the guest info folder.
No smoking allowed indoors.
No pets allowed. (We had to change our policy, due to problems with pets not being kept on a leash.)
Had a great time, plenty of room and the view of the lake was beautiful
Very clean place in good location. Would stay here again
Second time staying here. Love the location, clean and comfortable stay. Highly recommend
Beautiful location. Peaceful and quiet lake. House was clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay again!
Susan’s property was super clean, spacious and peaceful! New floors, bathrooms, kitchen, it was all very nice! Outside was peaceful and serene! We will be back! I loved parking in the garage too!
My two sisters, niece, and her son stayed at the property. We were very impressed with the size of the house, the lovely bedrooms and baths. And the kitchen is roomy and stocked with everything we needed. Love the lake, many fish were caught! If we needed assistance from Glen, he was right there. We used the deck a lot, too. Overall, everything was fun-tastic!
Our family had a great trip seeing family and relaxing at the beach.
Quaint lake and area! Worked great for the two of us, more than enough room.
Convenient location
Enjoyed the quiet and beauty of the area. House was perfects and roomy enough for everyone. Property owner was flexible with check-in given weather delayed my arrival. Would definitely stay again. Thank you for sharing your home!
We came out to visit nearby family — the rental was clean, recently renovated, and comfortable. There was plenty of space for my family of four.
The place was great and the location was beautiful. It was a wonderful property.
Great setting on Sunset Lake! Very nice home, relaxing environment!
Wonderful surroundings and beautiful lakefront cottage. Family and friends enjoyed our get together. Fished and utilized grill.
We are so grateful for the ease of everything this property has to offer. The updated interior is beautiful and so fresh feeling. The lake views are calming and just what the doctor ordered. The beds are very comfortable and rooms are so spacious! Having my 90 year old father there in close proximity to the wedding (CWES) was a relief and so convenient. If we ever have family or friends needing a place to stay this will be our first recommendation. Thank you Susan and Glen!
This is a wonderful property! Plenty of space and great views of the sunrise over the lake. The property had everything as advertised including firewood at a fair cost. The no wake lake is wonderful for kayaking/ paddle boarding.
This property has recently been remodeled. They did a really nice job! The weather was also perfect for September. This property is on a great little lake perfect for kayaking, bird watching, fishing. Added bonus of being very close to the ice age trail New Hope Iola segment. We brought a pan of Lasagna for dinner and kitchen had everything we needed for dinner. We actually spent most of the time outside on the deck or down by the water. We will be back!
House was great, the lake was clean and clear (could see bottom at 8') great time was had by all
The place is wonderful, updated recently and is cozy and cute with the best view and swimming.
