Stayed Jun 18, 2025The location of this rental is fantastic, just a short walk to the river and springs or an adventurer’s dream hike up Elephant Mountain. Uvalde and Camp Wood are both close by to pick up supplies or a meal. The pizzas with in-house made crusts at Canyon BBQ in Camp Wood were a big hit with the kids. This is definitely one of the most beautiful stretches of the Nueces, with varying depths suitable for our toddler, pre teens and even us old folks. The anglers in our group enjoyed fly fishing. The property has natural springs which add even more beauty and interest to the very well kept grounds. Birds, lizards and rabbits made for fun “Look at that” moments with our younger animal lovers (the older ones too). The kitchen was large and well equipped. We enjoyed the two Moccamaster coffee makers and commercial fridge. If you ever wanted to enjoy an old Western Movie’s Vista in person, this front porch is the place to do just that. The spacious house was clean and well-maintained with incredibly responsive and helpful hosts. The beds were comfortable with nice pillows and bedding. The bathrooms were clean and very well stocked. The BBQ pit was given high marks by “the guys”. It’s large and quite nice.Viewing the stars while sitting around the fire pit was one of my favorite pastimes. S’mores for the grandchildren adding even more fun! We vacation often and this beautiful home and property ranks among our top picks! We will definitely return to enjoy Elephant Mountain.

Stayed Jun 5, 2025Lovely homeLovely locationLovely hostsWe chose this place on the Nueces River for a Celebration of Life for my father. We invited family and friends to come for lunch and fellowship. It could not have been better. Herb and Dixie were kind and accommodating in a such a gracious manner. Not only was the house and location wonderful, but I made new friends. If you are looking for a large, welcoming home in the hill country - this is it!

Stayed Apr 6, 2024No superlatives can adequately describe the experience of staying at Elephant Mountain Ranch. The setting is idyllic. The hosts are charming, welcoming, and informative. Our group was all adults, but we all agreed this would've been over-the-top fun to enjoy as a child. Our primary activities were hiking, birding, floating on the pristine Nueces River, and cooking wonderful meals from the bounty we gathered at the Pearl Farmers Market in San Antonio before we headed to the Hill Country. Oh, and there was this amazing total solar eclipse during our stay. The kitchen area is large and perfect for social group meal preparation. The fridge space is enormous. The dining area overlooks the lawn and river where rock wrens and roadrunners entertained us at meal times. As first time visitors to Texas Hill Country we all added a half dozen or more new species to our life lists. Plenty of other wildlife to see plus a couple of exotic species to boot. The listing photos do not fully convey the cabin rustic chic and comfort of the house. We definitely plan on returning.

Stayed Jan 13, 2023Memorable long weekend in January for us 5 adults/4 kids 3-11. We all had plenty to do (and not do) on this sprawling, special property. This ranch has your own private river and mountain. We had great hiking around the base, and up towering Elephant Mountain, and exploring the crystal-clear river and creek fronts. Did some fishing (and even catching) with the kids. Kids camped adjacent to the house part of the time. Super birdwatching from the sage/brush hillside to the tree-lined lowland along the river. Lovely, very updated rock house, with great kitchen, super fridge and freezer space, living area overlooking covered porch and river valley. Very comfortable beds. Evenings perfect with fireplace, firepit, and grill set up with kindling and larger mesquite. Herbert and Dixie were perfect hosts, and accessible by text as needed to answer a question, and even introduced us to a trusted mechanic in Uvalde when one in our group needed vehicle attention on the way out. We will be back, and in the summer those kayaks down by the river will get plenty of use.

Stayed Oct 13, 2022You can see the pictures—this place is gorgeous! The perfect blend of country cabin with mod and boho elements that make it instantly comfortable. Spacious, yet cozy. Rustic, but with every modern convenience—you will NOT have to fight for fridge/freezer space. The set up with two 3-bed suites made it very easy to share with multiple households. Our kids had the _best_ time. Swimming, tubing, and chasing butterflies at the river. Climbing the mountain and exploring the caves. Laughing with cousins around nightly campfires and playing ping pong in the game room upstairs. What you can’t see from a listing is how wonderful the owners are. Stellar communication and hospitality. A thorough tour of all the places we might want to explore, regular trash removal, and daily food for the kids to feed the fish at the pond. And when we majorly goofed and wound up (100% though our own fault) with our van dangling over the edge of the creek, Herb not only made sure we got the help we needed, but was calm and reassuring when it would have been so understandable to be frustrated or put out. Such a wonderful experience. We hope we can make it back soon!

Stayed Aug 5, 2021Elephant Ranch is simply unbelievably beautiful. Of all the places we've been to in Texas since we moved here 3 years ago, this place tops them all. The house has a phenomenal view of the valley and Nueces River and the remoteness and isolation from major population sites makes for a spectacular view of the stars and milky way during the nights. We went with two other families and had kids ages 4-10 that had a blast. We basically spent the days by the river, which was safe, fun, but most importantly very refreshing. We can't wait to come back.
