One of the highlights of Cat Island is that it has the highest elevation of all of the 700 Bahamian islands. This high point is known as Mt. Alvernia and is a definitely see. The views are amazing and it is only 15 minutes from the house. On top of Mt. Alvernia is a landmark known as “The Hermitage” which is a small monastery built in the early 1900’s by and architect, Father Jerome who moved to the Bahamas from England. He lived in this monastery as a hermit until his death. After your hike up Mt. Alvernia, have lunch or dinner at the Blue Bird restaurant which features delicious Bahamian cuisine and is located across the road from the road to the Hermitage.
Other highlights to see are the “blue holes” located on the center of the island that communicate with the ocean and of course, the numerous beautiful white sand beaches.
Our caretaker is very helpful in assisting to set up tours of the island and white sand beaches.

The care taker Harrison made this trip amazing! He was so helpful and kind! Harrison went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and made sure we had everything we needed! Even more than that he made us feel like family! The house was nice and private. The people on this island were so amazing! Harrison had warned us to bring bug spray and that was very good advice as there were lots of bugs when out exploring the beach! Amazing sunrises at the house! Can’t wait to visit cat island again! Best trip we have taken so far! If u are looking to party this might not be the island for you. If you are looking for tranquility and a setting out of a fairy tale where every person you meet would be willing to help you with anything, then you should consider trip to cat island. Fell in love with this island and the people that call cat island their home!
Breathtaking views and beaches. If you want some R&R this is the place
A great quiet place to stay to enjoy all the ocean has to offer. Snorkelling right out front among the many coral head.s, kayaks available to explore the area. A very short walk to a nice sandy beach to enjoy the sunsets. Harrison was a gem, always there to offer his help.or advice on where to go and what to see.!
Ok, if you're looking for the Four Seasons this may not be for you but I enjoyed it. Great location, private and directly on the beach. Harrison, the caretaker, and Danny, my taxi driver and guide were fantastic. I will be back.
We had a wonderful stay at this property. Everything we needed was there and the owners were wonderful. If we needed anything or had any questions, they were very helpful and responsive. The views and peacefulness of this property are amazing.
The house is absolutely fantastic! We had an amazing time. Its a great place to have all the privacy or would want. Reynold the caretaker was super. He made sure we didnt need anything or.if we did he took care of it right away. If youre looking for a place to get away from it all, this is it! I highly recomend!!!
We had a great stay at this property. There was plenty of space for the 5 of us in the cottage. The pool was plenty big for all of us to be in at the same time when we wanted to be out of the ocean. The location of the property was great and the views were amazing. The care taker of the property Reynold was great. He helped us figure out everything we needed. We did a fishing trip one day with him and had a great time. My son caught a barracuda which he was so excited about, we also caught several other fish and Reynold and his son got a grouper and a lobster and his wife cooked us an amazing dinner. He also boiled down the barracuda head so that he could take it home as a souvenir. The owners were great to work with and answered all our questions. We would definitely recommend staying at the Gate House. The Pink Chicken was right around the corner has great food. The owners Dean and Patty are great people and Patty even took a break from the grill to throw the ball with my son. We also visited the very other end of the island where we had a great pizza lunch at Shannas Cove. We also visited Fernandez Bay Village which has a beautiful beach. We ate lunch Hawks Nest Resort which was very good and then we went to the marina where we saw lots of sharks hanging around. My son loved visiting Greenwood Beach resort where the care takers Antoine and Colleen Barbier were amazing! Antione helped my son on the slack and zip line and also did some fun magic tricks. We got to walk the pink sand beach and see some kite surfers. We also visited the Hermitage which was fun to get such an expansive view of the island.Groceries and gas were both pretty expensive, but we had a great time so it was well worth it.
We had great snorkelling the first 2 days but after it was too windy and choppy. However The pool was always sheltered and became a welcome oasis. Raynold was great and supplied two delicious meals.
We had an incredible time. The caretaker Reynold was awesome! He was the only person we saw the entire time we were there. His wife's cooking was amazing. The house was very private. We had the beach to ourselves. We also loved the pool. We will definitely return to this spot.
The view from the cottage was beautiful. My positive comments on this property end there.Be aware Reynolds will charge you a lot to escort you to the house. He then charged us extra for a bottle of water and a filled propane tank (didn’t ask for either of those). It would have been nice to have soap, shampoo or toilet paper at the house but they do not provide any of that. He was glad to take us snorkeling for $$$ and became very agitated when we didn’t sign up right away. The beach is 200 yards to the left in front of another house or 100 yards to the right though bushes and around a trash pile. You can stay at the small pool behind the house next to the electrical wires and extra stone for construction. The cottage is very small and in need of repair. We couldn’t turn on the ceiling fan because it hit me in the head (I’m 6’ 2”). Be careful when flushing the toilets, water comes up in the other toilet when you flush – very unpleasant. We have stayed in VRBO rentals all over the world and on 7 islands in the Bahamas. Save your money and skip this one, you can do so much better.
