Summary:

Cornerstone Beachside Cottage

The Space:

Newly built in 2021 in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, the Cornerstone Beachside Cottage is bursting with character. Located Gulf-side of Hwy. 98, this charmer boasts gorgeous ocean views on three sides and an unbeatable location just a few steps from the beach. Pictures and mementos of the original 1950s cottage that once stood on this spot and other Mexico Beach landmarks are displayed around the home, including the downstairs 1/2-bath vanity, made from a recovered piece of the pier. The blanket bench at the foot of the main suite’s bed was custom-made from a diving platform, pulled from the woods after the hurricane, and the donated headboard is from the original El Governor Motel. Finally, the half-wall at the top of the stairs was custom-made from a WWII Liberty Ship hatch cover, and the three stained-glass windows, imported from England, found new life at Cornerstone via Savannah, GA.

Lucky guests of this kiwi-green cottage will find not only history, but also modernity inside this brand-new space. The well-equipped kitchen features lots of counter space, a coffee bar, eat-in island and stainless steel appliances. The adjacent living room offers a large sectional, perfect for an afternoon snooze. If you’ve brought any remote work, the coffee table pops up to a desk, and the home’s 5G internet makes connecting easy. All TVs are smart TVs, making connection to personal streaming accounts simple and fast. Both bedrooms feature direct access to the bathroom and gorgeous sunrise and sunset views – but also blackout shades for those mornings you want to sleep in.

Outside, you’ll find several spaces for relaxing, including a porch off the living room, a screened porch - ideal for morning coffee and evening cocktails - and a second covered porch, accessible from the top of the stairs and the front bedroom, the perfect place to enjoy the Gulf breeze. Finally, the lower-level entertainment space offers access to the private outdoor shower and dressing room. Ample additional seating and beach chairs are provided and stored under the outdoor staircase for your use. For a taste of history complete with all the modern conveniences, you simply can’t beat a stay at Cornerstone Beachside Cottage!

This is a gorgeous house, very close to the beach and we loved our stay, but it was a surprise to be surrounded by other houses on all sides, one of which is an active construction site. I know this area is still in recovery and construction is to be expected, but an updated listing would have been helpful. The lower deck now mostly has a view of the new house built right behind it and we didn't use it at all. The upper deck has a peek of a view of the Gulf, but it is mostly overshadowed by the house next door, which has a rooftop deck looking right down on you if someone is using it. The ground level seating area is right next to the construction, which thankfully looks to be close to finished. One unexpected perk was the double-headed shower, it was very nice. We had to go back out to get coffee filters, salt and pepper. Luckily, there is a little market nearby. Otherwise, it was a great stay, just a bit different than the pictures led us to believe.

Home was clean, and exactly how the listing described it. There is a small, but nice view of the Gulf from the top deck off of the bedroom. Beds were comfortable, kitchen had all conveniences of home, and there was ample parking for our car. Would definitely stay at again in the future!

This rental home was terrific. It has a very nice, cozy interior as well as inviting exterior, great proximity to the beach (less than a half block) and easy access from a major highway. The only two negatives were the new construction activity next to this home and the hidden rental costs. On the 2 week days of our stay, hammers and nail guns disturbed us each morning starting at 6:45 AM. We don't know if Mexico Beach has construction regulations governing construction start times but the noise was unappreciated. The other negative was the advertised price of the rental. By the time all the fees and taxes are added, the final cost is double the advertised rate. Kudos to the homeowners for creating a beautiful beach cottage but shame on the rental agencies for not being up front about the construction noise and cost add ons.
