The Home
Built in 2022, the San Juan Retreat sleeps 12 across four king bedrooms and a loft kids' area. The open main floor living area features a gas fireplace, a fully stocked kitchen with quartz countertops and stainless appliances, and a dining area that seats the whole group. A south-facing deck with mountain and forest views is perfect for morning coffee or evening grilling.

Purgatory Resort is just 2.5 miles away. The attached two-car garage means you can unload your gear out of the cold, and the 24-slot boot and glove dryer ensures everything is warm and dry for the next day. A Level 2 EV charger (Grizzl-E) is available in the garage for electric vehicles. AWD/4WD with snowflake-rated tires or chains is required November through March — please see the house rules for details. Plenty of parking including trailer (25 ft long and smaller) parking for your offroad toys in Summer (May through mid Oct).

Into the Wilderness
Step off the back patio and onto a private nature trail leading 0.2 miles into the San Juan National Forest to Vista Point — a secluded overlook with panoramic views of Electra Lake and the Animas Glacier Valley. In winter it's a short snowshoe. In summer, a quick hike to a view most people never find.

Fishing
Guests receive a complimentary fishing pass for the private neighborhood lake, stocked with 20-inch trout. Open May through November, catch and release, artificial lures and barbless hooks only.

For the Kids
The upstairs loft is a dedicated kids' zone with a Twin XL bunk bed, an additional Twin XL, and a full-size sleeper sofa. A foosball table downstairs and cornhole outside keep everyone entertained on downtime days. A pack-n-play and high chair are on-hand, plus kid-friendly dishes and utensils so you don't have to pack your own. And every morning and afternoon, the kids will love hearing the whistle of the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad echoing through Cascade Canyon in the distance.

Stay Connected — or Don't
Starlink high-speed internet keeps remote workers productive. The master bedroom has a dedicated desk, HDMI external monitor, and desk chair for anyone extending their trip into a workation. Or leave the laptop at home entirely — the choice is yours. Three Roku TVs (BYO passwords).

Plenty of parking
Trailer (25 ft long and smaller) parking for your offroad toys in Summer (May through mid Oct).

Pets welcome
Up to 2 dogs allowed with a $100/pet fee and a signed pet addendum. Dog kennel provided (48 inches long by 30 inches wide by 32 inches tall).

EV Charger
Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV charger (40A) in the garage main stall.

Location
25 miles north of Durango and 25 miles south of Silverton, you're perfectly positioned between two of Colorado's most iconic mountain towns. Explore the shops and restaurants of Durango, ride the historic narrow gauge railroad, or push further into the backcountry — it's all within reach.

Bed Configuration
Main floor: King master bedroom with ensuite bath (walk-in shower, walk-in closet, water closet)
Main floor: King bedroom #2 with adjacent full bath (tub/shower combo)
Upstairs: King bedroom #3 with adjacent full bath (standalone soaking tub + rain shower)
Downstairs: King bedroom #4 with adjacent half bath
Upstairs loft: Three twin XL beds (bunk plus single), full-size sleeper sofa

Central heat keeps the house warm. Two mini-split air conditioning units, one in the main floor living area and the other in the loft common area—to help take the edge off of the rare extra-warm summer day. All bedrooms have a ceiling fan and additional fans are provided as well—just in case. Nighttime lows in the summer average in the 40's, and are sometimes in the 50's—perfect weather for opening bedroom windows at night!

Main living area is on the 2nd floor. One flight of stairs is required to get to the front door. Attached garage is on the 1st floor which includes one bedroom, laundry room, a half bath and a living space with couch and TV. Main floor includes 2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, living room, kitchen, dining area and entry/mud room. The third floor includes a loft common area, 1 bedroom and 1 full bathroom.

Important Notes
4WD/AWD with snowflake rated tires or chains is required November through late March, no exceptions. Local chains available from purgatorychains. Our home is 2 mi on a gravel road from Highway 550. The gravel roads are well maintained and plowed in winter, but will be snow/ice packed. A few sections of the road are at a moderate ~12% incline and can get icy and unequipped vehicles will get stuck—creating a safety hazard for the neighborhood. If you need to rent a vehicle with AWD and snowflake rated tires please try Turo.

Elevation: approximately 9,000 ft.

Great home for an expanded family. Grandkids loved the hiking trail and their own space. Young adults enjoyed the hot tub. The outdoor balcony was great for morning coffee and watching chipmunks. This location between Durango and Silverton, and not too far to Ouray was perfect for jeepin the area trails.

San Juan retreat has everything and more. From the fully stocked kitchen to the toys and sleds for the kids, they have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and complete. The hot tub was great for those after ski sore muscles and the sled hill right outside in the backyard gave our boys (11, 10, 9 and 4) endless fun! Rooms were large and the beds were cozy, the entire home was spotless. We highly recommend this beautiful cabin and can’t wait to stay again.

This cabin is more beautiful than the pictures show. The layout was perfect, it was spotless, and better equipped—down to a coffee grinder and rice cooker—than most permanent residences. The views from the back deck are stunning, but the short trail from the backyard is the ultimate treat as it leads you through groves of aspens, pines, and wildflowers to its destination of a picnic area nestled into a hillside with a breathtaking lake view. We loved the private neighborhood that is close enough to Durango for quick drives into town and practically next door to Purgatory Resort. In short, not one of us wanted to leave.
