Healdsburg, California
Mountaintop Respite Overlooking Vineyards
You could be in Tuscany atop this 10-acre, private and modern sanctuary, nestled in the heart of Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County with sweeping vineyard and mountain views, 20 minutes from the Healdsburg town square; we return 3 years after tending to a recovery and restoration.
Arriving at the property, you drive up the hill and take in the striking architecture. The floating metal and glass structure upon board-formed, concrete walls, hints at the modern interior – rich materials, color and art. Inside you'll find the breathtaking, all-encompassing views from every space – vineyards that wrap the immediate hills, and the mountains in the distance, hawks that hover in the updrafts of the valley below. Expansive window and door openings seamlessly blend indoor/outdoor living.
Your day begins by waking up to the sun rising over the vineyards to the East; enjoy coffee on the patio as the soft morning sunlight gives way to rising sun and warmth of the day. If you can pull yourself away from the sanctuary of our hilltop, the town square of Healdsburg is filled with great restaurants, art galleries, shopping and entertainment. 160+ wineries reside within the Dry Creek Valley, with additional wineries nearby in either the Alexander Valley or Russian River Valley.
When you find your favorite, local libation(s), purchase and retreat to settle in for an afternoon swim and nap, followed by a BBQ and sunset viewing upon the vineyards. Evenings are meant for leisurely meals and wine on the terrace, while you enjoy how the light changes to the East as the sun sets in the West. Nighttime brings dark skies and an unimaginable sky filled with stars, planets and constellations.
In between the house, the pool/spa and pool house, rests the remnant of a structure, kept purposefully as a ruin, not unlike what one may discover in Italy. The foundation and remnants of steel and concrete reveal the emergence of a re-imagined function - a garden ruin; it's an evolving design yet to be settled, oriented East to the vineyard views - lounge for morning coffee or evening cocktails, or a respite from the full sun after an afternoon swim.

Beautiful property.
We had a wonderful time. The clean architectural design of the home was amazing, and it had views that were both calming and breathtaking. Alan was the perfect host - so very thoughtful and gracious host to the point of providing delightful cupcakes from a local bakery and a bottle of wine to help us celebrate a milestone birthday!
Alan, we can’t express how pleased we were with our stay at your beautiful home. You provided everything we could have needed. All of the personal touches went far above and beyond anything we anticipated! The house is immaculate. The views, stars, serene setting, and quiet were just what the doctor ordered for our relaxing getaway. We loved exploring new wines, and hiking Armstrong Woods park during the day, and returning to the spa and pool for a relaxing evening, dinner at home, and night of stargazing. It was simply heaven on earth. We look forward to many more visits to your amazing retreat on the hill!
My wife and I spent about 7 weeks at this incredible home - the longest we've been out of Seattle in 20 years - and in a word it was rejuvenating. It's a beautiful winding drive into the hills behind the town of Healdsburg - bring your driving gloves - it can be quite twisty in spots. But pulling up to the home there's an immediate sense of peace. The home, thoughtfully designed and built by the hosts, is modern and beautiful, but blends into its natural surroundings perfectly. There are trees in every direction, except to the east where the view opens back up over the valley, the vineyards, and off in the distance, the mountains. You can't see the neighbors in any direction except for one house across the valley that's probably about 3 miles away. We cooked, swam, barbecued, rode our bikes, jogged in the hills, visited the amazing wineries and restaurants of Healdsburg, sat in the hot tub and stared at the stars and entertained friends on the patio. The home was well appointed in every way - the kitchen was a joy to cook in, beds were comfortable, and the furniture and art in the main living areas was gorgeous. The photos truly don't do it justice. But the best part was certainly our hosts - we got to know Alan, JP, and Cami over the course of our time there and aside from being attentive, responsive, and truly thoughtful we now think of them as friends we'll stay in touch with long after our stay is over. We're back in Seattle now, but dreaming of Healdsburg and our stay in this gorgeous hidden sanctuary.
We spent some days there with our adult children and the house is ideal for hanging out whether in/by the pool/jacuzzi or inside the house with all the (accordeon) doors/windows open on all sides. As a special treat, a curious fox walked by one morning to check us out! With the exception of the internet speed, everything exceeded very high expectations. We highly recommend this property if you are looking to get away but be within 15 minutes drive of what Healdsburg has to offer. Hint: do also visit Armstrong Park early morning - it's a 40 min drive away.
We spent a memorable long weekend at The Modern Home. We were excited to see the home since the pictures were so inviting. The home is done with such intention and purpose - beautifully decorated, luxurious beds and a peaceful backyard. We actually didn't want to leave but had made arrangements to visit local sites. We did spend every evening cooking and enjoying the property. We were fortunate to meet the owners -- they were as lovely as the property!! Very kind and attentive to our questions and requests. I highly recommend this property and would return without question. Worth every penny!!
Lovely home & amazing views of the valley. However the winding road up the hillside to the residence was challenging as each day we were scheduled for wine tastings. We totally enjoyed the evenings in the house & making dinner...of course enjoyed the fabulous wines of the region.
The photos and description of this property do not do it justice, it is absolute paradise. From the architecture to the views and all the little person touches like fresh flowers in every room, we were blown away by this gem of a getaway property in wine country. The hosts could not be more accommodating and made us feel right at home. Can’t wait to stay again.
Staying in this home was absolutely amazing. Every detail was thought of and the homeowners went way beyond what was expected. My husband and I really enjoyed the amazing vineyard views and the beautiful hot tub/pool. The road going up to the house was long, but beautiful. The large redwoods and forest was beautiful to see every time we drove back to the house. I'm coming back for sure!!
Words will not describe the property and owners well... we were so well taken care of in a property that surpasses anything I have seen even in the media! This was a magical experience and as others have said you will not want to leave this property and once you have - you will dream about being back!
