Mauna Kea Resort announces a $180-million renovation with no rollout plans as of yet, other than the April - November 2024 closure of the Mauna Kea golf course under the direction of Robert Trent Jones Jr. with visionary work of Robert Trent Jones Sr. and both sons Reese and Bobby Jr. Other plans include 252 hotel rooms, new spa, and dining venues. Resort pool will close for a short time as they relocated the spa. The resort tells us the renovation will be done in stages and won’t really affect amenities too much.
MEMBER OF THE CLUB - This allows you to purchase access to the resort.
When Laurance S.Rockefeller opened the Mauna Kea Resort in 1965, it was a new level of luxury for its hotel guests and now the guests of residential homeowners. Times have changed! At that time, Trent Jones Sr. was challenged to build a course on lava bluffs, but met that challenge and was honored by his son, Trent Jones Jr. decades later with an update to his father's design. Later, Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay stepped up to the task by creating an 18-hole course at The Hapuna Prince Beach Hotel now known as the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, a part of the Mauna Kea Resort.
The two pristine beaches are really the crowing jewels of these recently remodeled and upgraded resorts, ranking among some of the top beaches of the world.
Welcome to the Mauna Kea Resort!

This homeowner extends the use of their Club Membership to their guests to purchase their own access enjoying the amenities at both the Mauna Kea Resort and the Westin Hapuna. This purchase covers the entire household for both resorts. See attached flyer for the details of this wonderful offer! It is optional, but we are sure you will want to experience what a hotel guest does, but from the comforts of a private residence.
It is our sincere hope that you will build a tradition through the years, making the Mauna Kea Resort your home away from home through one generation after the other.

The property was pretty and fit our needs well. It was well appointed, and comfortable. We liked the location. However the property manager lacked an attention to detail that detracted from the trip. To begin with, she did not consistently reply to my inquiries within a business day. The check-in instructions were somewhat confusing, and included, for example, an incorrect street name. (It was a court, not a circle, a minor difference that matters if you're using a navigation app that can't find your vacation home!) Once we arrived at the property, I went to guest services of the associated resort to pick up our passes. We had not been pre-registered, as we were supposed to be and had paid to be. When I asked why, the person behind the counter guessed the name of the property manager I was dealing with. Clearly I was not the only client to have this experience. At the house, the hot water didn't work. So the showers were cold and the pool was unheated. It was Saturday. The property manager told us she would call the maintenance people on Monday, as they were closed over the weekend. On Sunday, the maintenance people showed up on their own to clean the pool. We asked them to fix the heat, and they did. They pointed out they were available 24/7 and assured us we could call them any time. That was not the information the property manager gave us.
Our family really enjoyed this house. There were four of us, and we had plenty of space with bedrooms and bathrooms for each of our adult children plus us. We enjoyed the pool. Initially it wasn’t heating but after messaging the host it was fixed quickly. We enjoyed the view from the house. It was well supplied. Instructions were clear. Place was clean. Area is very quiet. We would gladly stay here again.
Excellent property
It was a beautiful home and ample space for four adults and two kids under 10 years. The views were breathtaking however, pool was not cleaned before we arrived. My family and I cleaned it ourselves on the first night. I liked the fact that the depth was safe for the little ones. The heating between hot tub and pool malfunctioned during the first two days. After some back and forth texting (lol many text messages assuring the manager we were following the instructions) , Donna herself came out to fix it with the handyman. The pool was fixed and cleaned. Bring kitchen supplies. Be sure to bring basic supplies ie sugar, coffee filters, citronella candles etc. I noticed that swim gear was available ie snorkel gear but make sure to clean them well and check they work. We got out to the beach and realized their snorkel masks needed to be replaced. Easy fix via renting equipment on the beach. Hapuna’s beach does not disappoint at all! Treat yourself to a cabana! Remember that when you rent this home an additional $165 per night will be charged for resort amenities automatic at the end of the stay, Irrespective if you use the resort amenities or not. Just be aware of that. I will say the resort amenities are stellar and we enjoyed ourselves. Overall, I think Donna tried her best with communicating with us but we could tell she was very busy. It was a nice stay and everyone enjoyed themselves for the most part. We will likely find another place next time because of communication issues, timeliness to fix house concerns, cleanliness, and resort fees.
Donna was great to deal with as we had 7 fun filled days of beach, golf and greats eats. The house is laid out well as the 2 Masters bedrooms are on opposite sides of the house. Kitchen was stocked of everything as we went to the store in Waikoloa Village for 4 nights dinners. Went to Merrimans and Bamboo otherwise and Manta. Wonderful memory and we will return. Thanks Donna!
Very comfortable property on pretty grounds. The house, pool, and grounds all looked better in person than in the pictures. I would stay again! Luke
This house and it's location was perfect for our family of four. We used all the amenities that both hotels offered as well as having our own pool. When you first walk in, the view of the pool and the ocean just blew us away (the photos don't do it justice). We enjoyed the sunsets from the patio and the star gazing was incredible (you can see the Milky Way and shooting stars). The snorkeling at Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beach were fantastic. We also saw the Manta Rays at night at Mauna Kea. We drove to Hilo (1.5 hours), Kailua-Kona (30 minutes), Waimea (15 minutes) and the top of Mauna Kea (1 hour). I wish we had more time to explore! Donna was extremely responsive with any issues that we had. We are definitely coming back!! Mahalo!!
We have stayed at Mauna Kea many times. Several times at the hotel and twice at other homes/villas. This home is on the other side of the highway, away from the hotels and beach, so it is Not an easy walk to the beach. The home is nice, each bedroom has its own bath and the rooms are reasonably private at night. The house layout is good, the living room is a little small, but is right off the poll area, so it was fine for the 6 of us. If you had a bigger group with maybe small kids, there is a finished garage, turned into a large family room area. The pool is nice and pretty large for a private res., but not good for lap swimming. The views are ok, nothing to write home about, sort of peak a view. We stayed one week here with our adult children and their partners. The home worked out very well for the comings and goings of everyone and we could hang by the pool when all together.
Beautiful, well stocked home, very comfortable, lots of outdoor seating
Perfect property for our family. Donna was very responsive to any needs that arose. Would stay again!
We loved staying here and hope to be back as soon as we can! Lovely house on a small hill with beautiful landscaping and views. We had a great time with the pool, as well as access to the Mauna Kea resort and its perfect beaches. Donna was very pleasant and responsive to communicate with.
This place was amazing! Was fully stocked with EVERYTHING from cleaning supplies to laundry supplies, towels, pool and beach toys etc. There was nothing we had to run out and get, it was all there! House was clean and comfortable! Having two master suites was a huge bonus! Plenty of room for the 7 of us! A huge part of what made our stay so memorable was getting the access to the Mauna Kea Resort! Highly recommend getting that! It’s only a 5 minute drive from the house (20 minute walk). The resort looks brand new and has a great gym, pools and one of the best beaches I’ve ever seen! Our only issue was the hot tub was not working while we were there, but Donna (owner) has promised to make that right. I cannot wait to go back to this place! Amazing!!!
We have stayed in many VRBO properties over the past 15 or so years and this is, hands down, our favorite. Everything about this house is perfect. Donna makes booking & check-in a breeze. We will be back! Mahalo for a wonderful week!
This was perfect! We had 5 adults and 3 eleven year old grandchildren and it couldn’t have been better! The kitchen was extremely well stocked, the layout for this large family was perfect, the pool and lanai was wonderful and what a gorgeous view! We all HIGHLY recommend this home!
Donna was amazing to work with and attended to all of our needs. She was responsive and helpful with all of our requests. I highly recommend staying at this beautiful property. It was well stocked , perfectly located, and overall… beautiful. The rooms are as seen in the pictures. If not better. Stop looking for another place, book this one :).
The house, pool and location were perfect. The property manager was responsive and easy to communicate with.
This property was in great condition. It had everything we needed for our stay. The home was organized & it had a detailed check-in & check-out. We loved the pool & hot tub and used them daily. Donna was very communicative & responsive. The beaches at both resort properties were worth every penny. We'd love to visit again!
