Makai Hideaway is quiet and peaceful. Unwind and relax from city life. House is an an hour south of Kona and one hour ten minutes south of the Kona airport. It is one hour ten minutes to volcano from the house. shop before you come as nearest grocery store is 25 minutes away. Two bedroom with multiple beds, three baths, We are in a lovely location with outstanding ocean views and nearby water sports! Descend a paved road 12 minutes to the house from mile marker 89 and enjoy what I believe are the best views on the island!. A large Lanai runs the length of the house for dolphin and whale watching. Have dinner on a beautiful 600 foot Lanai and watch the incredible sunsets and enjoy coastal breezes. There are many fans in the house but there isn't air conditioning. Go one and half blocks to water access for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving and fishing. Also,it's great to walk around the neighborhood. Bedwise, there is a king bed in the master and one queen beds in the house and one queen sleeper sofa plus a futon. There is a foldout mattress plus an airbed mattress in the toy closet. Also, there is an ocean view from the kitchen and you can sit on the couch and see the ocean. Sunsets are phenomenal and different every night. There is a barbecue on top deck. There's a king bed in the upstairs master! There is a washer and dryer in the gameroom and extra small fridge by the tiki bar. the nearest grocery store is 25 minutes away so many travelers stop at Costco as it is by the Kona airport on the way down. There is a supermarket at mile marker 77 and gas station, too.House is a good hour ten south of airport at mile marker 89. The views of the Pacific ocean are sensational and I never get tried of seeing as I descend from 1200 feet to sea level. Please conserve on water and electricity as Hawaii has the nations top rates. There's a nice ocean breeze often at the house but there isn't AC at the house nor do most homeowners in Hawaii have it. We saw a turtle the size of a volkswagon off one of the cliffs in the area and the snorkeling at the swimming hole is great! The swimming hole is a two minute walk away- go to Kai street and turn right. This is where you put in the kayaks or take them into the village of Milolii. There is internet and Netflix so the TV is great! My favorite thing is reading a book on the chaise lounge on the deck or going down to the swimming hole to swim and snorkel. Downstairs in the outside closet is everything you would ever need- coolers, beach mats, beach toys, snorkeling masks and equipment, life jackets,, chairs. Please rinse off anything you borrow and put back in. Boogie boards and other toys are in outside toy closet. Please keep orderly.. Live action video camera faces catchment tank and driveway.
The Milolii area is famous for deep sea fishing, and you can watch the fishing boats or go out yourself. The beautiful secluded Honomolino Beach is close by-short walk along the coast from Milolii State Park-watch the spinner dolphins, snorkel with the fish in the coral, and maybe see a sea turtle or a rare Hawaiian monk seal.
From Kona airport go south on Highway 11 towards Kailua and continue on towards the 89 mile marker, turn right on Milolii Road. Go about three miles, turn right on to Ewalu Avenue drive down the road to Waenea Avenue turn left. Drive to third intersection which is Elima Avenue, turn right and go a half block to a tan house left hand side which is 88-1555.
From Hilo airport go on Highway 11 north for about two hours till you come to the sign that reads Milolii. Turn left by the sign drive three miles down the road to Ewalu Avenue, turn right drive down to the stop sign to Waenea Avenue turn left. Drive to the third intersection and turn right on Elima Avenue. Go a half block to a tan house left hand side of the road which is 88-1555. Daniel will have the house open for you and take you on a tour! My tax id numbers are TA-053-302-6816-01 and GE-053-302-6816-01

Our family of 5 stayed here for 5 days. This property was very clean and decorated in a super charming way. Cheryl was helpful with her knowledge of the area and the home was stocked with many different supplies that we used including beach chairs, boogie boards and beach umbrellas. Stephen shared the most incredible white pineapple with us and their personal touch was really nice. We loved the large deck and the sound of the ocean. The road to the property is not for the faint of heart, but we found it added to our adventure.
There were 4 of us. My husband and 2 of our 20 somethings. Everyone had plenty of space to themselves for work, fun and relaxation. The house was very accommodating. The deck is everything! For gathering, for eating and for viewing the ocean. The drive in and out of the neighborhood is something to be aware of, and driving was a big part of getting to see the island and all it has to offer. Everyone forgave the driving since it was so nice to be back at the house!
The house is beautiful and wonderfully stocked with everything you may need. Cheryl was a great host. However we ended up having to leave early as we could not handle the drive in and out with 99 turns just on the road down and over 300 to go to Kona! Great place if you don’t want to do anything but relax!
We enjoyed our stay very much! Perfect way to spend a week away from reality of everyday life. Highly recommend. As others mentioned, be careful on the winding road.
Quiet neighborhood. House had lots of toys and amenities. Very relaxing and enjoyable stay
Great location, great property, close to the water and many other locations we had planned. Host was fantastic!
We used the house as a home base to explore the island on many excursions. The highlight was watching/hearing the ocean and waves from the deck while eating breakfast each day, then soaking up the ocean sounds at night under the stars. Very comfortable accommodations with superb house host who is informative and friendly with a love for Hawaii.
The description of property was spot on! It is exactly an hour and half south of Kona and is in a very quiet neighborhood. The house is well equipped for staying staying there. We found the nearby swimming hole and ventured in for a quick swim. There is plenty of beach equipment and we used the snorkels.
The Makai Hideaway is a gem. It is well-equipped and worked well for our family (three generations). There are a numerous personal touches, and Cheryl is a very conscientious and responsive host. She has left guidebooks, information and even her own top 10 list. There is a lot to see and do on the island, so we did a lot of day trips. Everyone appreciated the large lanai, especially in the morning and at sunset. We often had gecko guests (very cute). The kids (teenagers) loved having their own space and their own beds on the lower level, especially after staying in more crowded accommodations earlier in the trip. Do make sure you read the listing carefully as the access to the lower is external- Cheryl is very open about this and it was fine for us but it would not work for everyone. The “swimming hole” nearby proved to be an excellent spot for snorkeling- on par with many more well-known places- though we could only go toward to end of our stay as the waves were too rough initially. Worth a special mention: We bought mac nuts in their shells from a stand on the road down to the house, and everyone loved cracking and eating these.
This property was perfect for our group. Our host went way and beyond to be communicative regarding our rental and provide additional information regarding things to do. We hope to return.
Any and everything one might forget to pack was available and immaculately stored. The beds were comfortable and we slept better than at home especially with the sounds of the sea hitting the rocks. We absolutely loved our stay and hope to go back!! It was especially relaxing after a grueling year of cancer treatments for Marianne. There is nothing you could do to make the stay more relaxing. Thanks for letting us use your beach chairs, etc.♥️
A truly fantastic property set in a very quiet location With great sea views.
LOVED the house. We had a large party of eight and it was nice having separated upper and lower floor living quarters that accommodated everyone. There was a Pac 'n' Play and high chair which was great as we had an infant. There is a shed with every type of swim/sand/beach equipment imaginable. Cheryl was very easy to get ahold of and kept me updated with notifications to make the check-in/check-out process smooth. Very short walk to the beach. Unfortunately the waves were too high during our stay to go into the water. Only downfall was the drive down to the house. The switchback road leading the last 3 miles was not something we were used to and was nerve racking for us, particularly when it was dark or raining out. Otherwise, no complaints and highly recommend!
My family had an incredibly fun time staying in this house for a week. The house is clean and tidy, with island decor. Cheryl is a wonderful communicator with great activity suggestions and recommendations. We enjoyed the private snorkeling spot, and used it almost every morning. We like to be removed from the hustle of the heavy tourist population when traveling, and this house is perfect for that.
Cheryl's home is probably one of the most well stocked homes we have ever been in. It is very comfortable and our party loved grilling out on the deck and star gazing. The area is very dark and quiet. There is a bit of a twisty drive to get to the house, but being from Colorado, it really wasn't an issue for us. The house is located about hour away from everything, so each day we did have a pretty good trek into either Kona or down the other side to the volcanos and Hilo. Cheryl took plenty of time to give us suggestions as well as details about our stay. We hit the Costco after the airport and had plenty of things to cook or snack on if we didn't feel like looking for a place to eat. The only downside for our family was the layout of the house. We had two couples with two kids each. We intended for each couple to take one of the queen or king rooms and the kids to all stay together in the the 2 queen/ bunk bed room. However the only way to access the lower level is the outside stair case, its pretty separate. Also without air conditioning you have to leave the sliding doors open, and the screen doors do not lock, so the house is completely open all night or super warm. Even though our kiddos are a bit older ranging from 10-14 this made me a bit nervous. Which is more my personality than anything to do with the house. Cheryl was quick to offer me more sleeping options to keep the kids in the upper level with us, but in the end the dads traded off sleeping downstairs with the kiddos. The kids loved the area and thoroughly enjoyed the game room and lower patio. At no time did the area feel unsafe nor did anyone ever disturb us. I just happen to be a more nervous traveler than most when it comes to the kids. We had a wonderful stay and appreciated Cheryl's hospitality. The whole area is just beautiful.
