LaMotte Cottage has been in the LaMotte family since 1939. Originally built in 1917, it is now over 100 years old, with the history and charm that only comes with a century of good memories being created there. The front porch is great for watching the hummingbirds, and the large side deck can easily accommodate a pretty large group of friends.

Nestled in the rhododendrons, and therefore shady and cool in the summer, the house is heated with a wood stove (with small space heaters onlyto supplement IF needed). In the summer, it is cooled — quite effectively — by open windows, electric fans and shady trees.

Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower. One bedroom has a double bed, the second has a double and a single, and the third has two singles. Downstairs, the living room/dining room, kitchen, porch, deck, one bedroom, and one bathroom with the original claw foot bathtub (deep and luxurious, in an old school, really old school, way!). The kitchen is well-outfitted, with oven, stove, microwave, drip coffeemaker, etc.

LaMotte Cottage is the kind of place that invites long evenings of good conversation, jigsaw puzzles, and a glass of wine. It also has cable TV and high-speed WiFi. Montreat offers beautiful hiking trails, a lake, gift shops, and snack bar. In the summer canoes and paddle boats can be rented and there is a free community barn dance with live music on Friday nights! Flat Creek, just across the road, has a lovely walking path beside it and is easily accessible for a pleasant walk, rock hopping, or place to cool your watermelons on a warm day!

A lifelong family destination for our family's summer vacations, it has shown up in poems, songs, paintings, and many, many stories. We hope you will enjoy creating a few of your own here and will return often.

We did not see anywhere in the description that the only source of heat was a wood stove which we could not easily use and the space heaters tripped the breakers and we were so cold we got runny noses and were miserable and ended up staying at a hotel instead, and hosts would not allow a refund or credit when requested. We were attending the marriage retreat event at the Ridgecrest Convention Center and had a horrible experience freezing during what was supposed to be a romantic, wonderful, stress-free weekend with our spouses and coworkers.

Overall great experience. Reached out to the host ahead of time and they were very responsive. House was in good shape for an older place and the little touches around the house were great. (Rocking chairs on porch loved). Only thing I would point out is if you show up after dark it is a little hard to find, no lights except on porch. Overall lovely home.

We had a wonderful stay at LaMotte Cottage. It was charming, clean, and comfortable. My daughter in Swannanoa came over to visit with her toddler and we enjoyed walking to the park with playground. A couple of friends came for supper on the deck. Thanks for the opportunity to stay at the cottage.

The house is charming. We were lucky that it was cool weather. I don't think it would be pleasant to stay there in hot weather. The dehumidifier puts out a lot of heat, but without it, you can smell mildew. I recommend adding a dehumidifier upstairs. It was very musty, and most people have allergies to mildew.

We invited several friends and family members to join us for my 80th birthday. When we arrived we found a very, very dirty house. With exception for the nice towels the house was unacceptable. After several complaints the deck was cleaned but nothing was done inside the house … dirty floors, mildew in the shower, messiness everywhere. I asked the agent to provide some improvements but was told no services would occur because the rent was so low. We rented the house for more than two weeks. No cleaning service occurred mid-way and no cleaning supplies are available. This house was not up to VRBO standards … not even close!

This is a perfect time capsule from the early days of Montreat... Cozy, convenient, an excellent launch pad for family adventures, and a resting spot after hikes and creek hopping. The hosts are great about communicating.

There was so much to learn in the history of this home! It sits right on the walking trail in Montreat with the creek across the road. The soothing sound of running water can be heard from the two porch/decks where we spent a lot of time. This charming cottage had us imagining what life was like there 100 years ago. Eight of us fit comfortably, though for a stay longer than 2 nights we would have needed more than one shower! The kitchen had everything we needed, too.

This trip brought my extended family together at Montreat for the first time since 2007. The location of the house was perfect; so very close to the Moore Center and right across from creek access. We could not keep our 11 year olds out of the water! The plumbing gave us some trouble at first but the host immediately responded and fixed it quickly. I'm certain it was an unusal issue, especially as no other reviewer mentions such an issue. So, no need to worry. Even if there is a problem, you will have an extremely responsive host.

This is our third year coming to Montreat over Memorial Day and our first time at this cabin. It was the perfect location with the short walk to the park. The side deck was roomy and the perfect gathering spot for us and our family friends who came by for a meal. When it rained, we just moved to the covered deck out front. It was so nice having sheets and towels provided along with a washer/dryer. Hosts were very generous with clean fluffy towels, paper products and kitchen supplies. We told our other Montreat veterans about this property and will definitely be coming back ourselves! Thank you for a lovely stay!
