Terlingua, Texas
Summary:
La Paloma Triste: Classic adobe vacation home. Minutes from Terlingua and Big Bend National Park.
The Space:
Step back in time at this vintage Terlingua adobe. La Paloma Triste is an ideal escape from the madness of modern life. This is the quintessential Terlingua vacation home.
La Paloma Triste (The Sad Dove) is a classic adobe home near Willow Spring and just minutes from Terlingua with excellent views of the Chisos Mountains and Willow Mountain. Built in the 80’s, with antique doors, windows, fixtures, and furnishings reclaimed from much older homes in Mexico and the Southwest, this cozy home blends modern conveniences with genuine rustic charm. Whether relaxing by the wood burning stove or enjoying the views from the porch swing, you’ll feel as if you stepped back in time to the pioneer days of the Wild West.
There is plenty of room to relax with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a large living room, one and a half bathrooms, a spacious porch and covered parking, not to mention forty private acres of pristine desert habitat. The main bedroom features a queen sized four poster bed, antique armoire, antique dresser and a private bath with a shower. The second bedroom has two walls full of windows with breathtaking views of the Chisos Mountains and nearby Bee Mountain. The living room has an antique wood burning stove (wood provided), rustic built-in shelves filled with artifacts and other items of local interests, and comfortable seating. The fully stocked kitchen has a new gas stove, antique sink, rustic shelving, and a classic pine and cedar table that was built by the owners. The large back porch has a porch swing for two with amazing views of the Chisos Mountains and Bee Mountain. The carport protects your vehicle from the west Texas sun and our infrequent storms.
Of course, the main attractions are outside. Take time to enjoy the solitude of the Chihuahuan desert and Willow Spring. The area around the house is landscaped with native plants, interesting rocks, and rusty pioneer artifacts that were collected over many years by the original owner. You will also want to visit Big Bend National Park, the Rio Grande River, Big Bend Ranch State Park, Terlingua Ghost Town, and our various restaurants and shops. If you don’t have time on this trip, you’re welcome to return again and again.
The views of the night sky are beyond simple description. The Big Bend region has the darkest nights (lowest light pollution) of anywhere in the continental US.
As the song says, “the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas”. They’re even bigger and brighter here in the Bend. When the moon is out, you’ll be amazed at how bright and clear it shines. When the moon is not out, you’ll be stunned by the countless stars and the light and dark bands of the Milky Way. In the hour or two after sunset and before sunrise, you can often see the International Space Station and other satellites racing across the night sky. Shooting stars are visible throughout the year, especially during the Perseid and Geminid meteor showers.
Check out “VisitBigBend.com” for suggestions of things to do and see during your stay. Explore the parks, raft the river, go horseback riding, take scenic drives, go mountain biking, visit the ghost town, eat out, enjoy the local nightlife including live music at several small venues, watch the wildlife, or just relax on the porch with your favorite book. Return home exhausted and inspired from endless adventures or well-rested and refreshed from escaping the rush of modern life. The choices are all yours. Regardless of your plans, La Paloma Triste (The Sad Dove) is an ideal home away from home for your visit the Big Bend.
This house was perfect to come back to after a long day of hiking! Beds were comfortable. We did not use any kitchen stuff so we are unable to comment on the kitchenware but over all a great place to stay!
The property was perfect. Clean, well stocked, quiet, close to Big Bend. We loved everything about it and would stay again.
The home is just as described on the website. Beds are very comfortable and the back porch is nice. It is close to a couple of properties but still very private. Kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils. Home is very roomy, lots of space to spread out. We had a maintenance issue, I reached out to Janet at 6:45am by email and she responded almost immediately! June/July warning: this is no fault of the property owners but I would heed a warning of a June/July stay due to the extreme heat. Although the home stays comfortable with the 3 window units the kitchen stays in the low 80’s and the water temperature stays almost too hot to shower with. Again this is no fault of the home/owners its just part of the environment. I WOULD absolutely stay here again any of the other 10 months of the year!
stay was amazing! the beauty of the setting was breathtaking. the house was spacious and well furnished. the AC was a bit iffy but that was ok. would definitely recommend
If you want an authentic West Texas adobe ranch house experience-this is the place. Enjoyed the front porch for morning coffee/bird watching & night star shows. The orientation of house faces south so a regular breeze felt on porch. Had a thunderstorm lightning show that was breathtaking. We went early June & vacation gods were kind w/cool nights & highs in low/mid 90’s. Has all the kitchen items you’d need. 2 Queen beds one soft, one firm - pick what u like. Hard pine floors/antiques dot the house & landscape - great conversation starters. Bring a lantern/flashlight if you’ve never experienced country dark. Suggest bringing water, great camera, and childhood dreams of riding the range and exploring.
We had a wonderful stay at this property to explore the parks, Terlingua, Marfa and Fort Davis. The house and property are beautiful. It's about a mile off the highway and very close to Terlingua and Big Bend National Park. The home is wonderfully secluded and quiet. All the amenities you need are present. The owner does request that no toilet paper be flushed in the toilets. There is a small trash can for you to use. The house is a mile down a dirt road. If there is no rain, you will be fine in a car. If it rains you will be grateful for 4 wheel drive.
After many decades on this earth, I can say, absolutely, that this 5 day trip to the Big Bend area - staying at The Sad Dove property - was one of the TOP 3 trips of my life. Seriously. The name of the game when visiting this area of the country is location, location, location. I cannot imagine a better location than this. The natural surroundings are awesome and bountiful, in every direction. In the early morning while the sun is still in the east, if you line up the grill and the yucca and then look off into the distant mountains, you will see the opening of the Santa Elana Canyon, on the Rio Grande. Then hop in the car and drive to see its magnificent grandeur up close. It just takes your breath away. The location is also great for buzzing into Terlingua for a great evening meal at The Starlight Theater Bar and Grill. Food is fantastic, people are friendly, and some nights they have live music. One of the nights we were there, they had a local group with acoustic instruments and really nice singing in harmony. A main entrance to BB National Park is very close - about 20 miles or so from the house. Of course the park is magnificent. If you have time for only one thing in the park, go on the designated Scenic Drive. No words to describe, just do it. You won't be sorry. We found the house to be very comfortable and authentic, as an old adobe structure. Fits right in to the history and customs of the location. We used the kitchen more often than we ate out, and it was absolutely fine for all our needs. Appreciated the ice cube trays in the freezer and used them daily. The beds were comfortable, and it was great having 1 1/2 bathrooms. The interior temp was easy to regulate between the air conditioners and ceiling fans. Although one bedroom ceiling fan did not work, the room was entirely comfortable with the ac in use. As is, this is the most perfect rental situation I have ever experienced. If I could make one change, I would put different chairs on the porch. The black ones are not very comfortable and the ones in the closet were both broken. BUT even this did not cause any serious problems, We figured out a temporary solution, and had a wonderful, spectacular time, and would return to The Sad Dove for any future trip to the area. Thanks to all who make this place possible and available. MMH
It really is a dream of a place but mattresses and window-ac-units should be replaced. Everything else is in excellent shape and couldn’t be better. Location is a true five stars.
Did not realize how isolated the place was and the road to get there was rough being by myself with 2 kids
We loved the views and the house was perfect for our needs.
Delightful two bedroom with great veranda. Sunsets were fantastic. Very charming interior - all wood floors. Location to the park was also excellent. Would definitely stay again! Steve Joyce
Loved Sad Dove. Location and porch were awesome. Location to Big Bend is a huge plus. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend. Could use a few improvements. Refrigerator needs to be replaced or defrosted, no toaster, update shower. Ceiiling fan in one bedroom did not work.
The view and air were great!
We had the best time staying here. The location was perfect. The views from every window where phenomenal. We were comfortable and the house had all we needed. The directions provided were very clear and helpful. I would jump at the chance to stay here again.
Upon entering the house was very clean. It was cold during our stay and we enjoyed the wood burning furnace with free firewood. Electric heaters did the job too. The grounds and house have a collection of interesting things which we enjoyed. The kitchen was more than adequate for our needs. Being a suburbanite, I was concerned about the gravel road into the location but it was easy to navigate. We really enjoyed the place. We have no complaints about our stay. We would wish for some tile in the bathroom/shower, a television for streaming (wi-fi was excellent), and a toilet that would flush the paper. Thanks for great memories! Highly recommend!
Simple, comfortable and homey. Located away from any neighbors, yet not far from services in the hamlet of Terlingua. Views of both The Window and Santa Elena Canyon from porch sitting area! A special treat for us bird lovers: we heard elf owls calling at night.
Quiet and near town but far enough away to get the full effect of the South Texas Night sky! Convenient location to the National and State parks.
