Ithaca, New York
The tower cottage is a two story 10' wide octagonal tower connected to a main living area of about 22' x 11'. It is tucked into the woods with views of the hillside and pond, and private back deck. The tower was inspired by a trip to the Spanish Pyrenees and it is crowned with a wrought iron scultpure by the local artist/blacksmith, Duran Van Doren.
The living area is furnished with Stickley Mission furniture - a comfortable queen size leather sleeper sofa made up with a memory foam mattress topper, a side tables with three drawers, tabouret tables, a flat screen television on a Harvey Ellis console, a Stickley rocker and a footstool. The dining area has a round Stickely Mission oak dining table with four matching chairs. The kitchenette has an undercounter fridge and freezer, microwave oven, induction burner, coffee maker, and plates, glasses, utensils, etc. There is no kitchen sink, but a basin filled from the nearby bathroom sink functions well if you have dishes to wash up. If you can use anything not listed - such as a blender or juicer or automatic egg cooker, let us know.
French doors lead to a small private back deck in the woods with two comfy chairs and footstools.
The first floor of the tower has a glass tiled shower, a 'water closet' with an odorless waterless composting toilet, and heated floor tiles around the sink and changing area. The composting toilet has two large completely enclosed collection chambers in the basement, and continuous negative airflow, carrying any odors away from the living quarters. Once a year, or two, the compost is removed from the lower chamber and spread as mulch around the orchard.
A wrought iron railing and cantilevered stone steps bring you upstairs to an luxuriously comfortable organic (latex, wool and cotton) California-king bed, custom made for the space by the J.W. Southard Company, a fourth generation family owned business in Syracuse, NY. A door at the top of the stairs opens out to a small wrought iron balcony. There are also wrought iron clothes hooks throughout - also made by Duran Van Doren.
The tower cottage has an air-to-air electric heat pump for heat or quiet air-conditioning, but we’ve found that the tower bedroom functions as a chimney, pulling up cool air from the shaded first floor windows, creating a very pleasant breeze when the weather is not steamy hot. The tower cottage also has wifi and cable television.
We had a wonderful stay! We enjoyed the beautiful stone work and heated floor. Clean and comfortable accommodations. Pull out couch was not comfortable. Nonetheless we had a great stay and the host was easy to contact and got back to me quickly with answers to my questions. Great place!
My husband, dog and I came for a long weekend to enjoy the Finger Lake region for our anniversary. Such a cute cottage! Overall, the property is very nice. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and Nancy was very responsive to all of our questions and concerns.
The place was neat and interesting and very convenient to trails and Cornell. The composting toilet was not a problem at all. The kitchenette is minimal but we only had breakfast there so it met our needs. The back deck had no views, we preferred to look out front at the stunning fountain. I was away at a conference during the day but my partner said one day the quarry traffic was noticeable heavy. My two dogs enjoyed the locale, country road walks and the nearby Dryden Rail Trail.
Our stay at the tower cottage was delightful! We had a great time exploring the Fingerlakes region and sampling the wines—There were _plenty_ of wineries to choose from in the surrounding areas. Nancy was a great host—helpful but not intrusive. The compost toilet was a little off-putting, but we got used to it. The house was charming and just the right size for 2 adults. The rocker in the living room was the perfect spot to work on my knitting, and waking up in a tower with the sunlight streaming in from the skylights is a delight. Definitely recommend!
A wonderful corner on the outskirts of Ithaca. Charming and restful.
My husband and I stayed with our two pups. The cabin was wonderful - unique, comfortable and absolutely charming. The pups loved their daily walk around the lake just outside the door. Would absolutely be back
Very unique experience on biodynamically managed gated compound away from hustle/bustle of Ithaca but close to Cornell. Here you will find privacy, fresh air, long distance to any neighbors, unique gothic house, very cutely renovated - which won't leave you smelling like dis-infectants. Private pond with carps. Owners have own chickens. No light pollution. This is very close to Weston Price paradise.
We had a marvelous week there.
We had a great time exploring the area and slept peacefully in the comfortable bed!
The main room (first floor) is not large but great place to sit and read or surf the net on your laptop or take a nap or binge watch your favorite series. The small deck off the back with two padded chairs is a cool location to sit and read. The tower housed bedtoom (literally a bed surrounded by 8 walls) has two windows in the tower roof through which to see brances of the taller trees. Both upstairs and downstairs have easy to operate AC/heating units that any traveler to Europe will recognize as the primary hotel heating/cooling device. The shower and composting camode are in the base of the tower, on the first floor. A lovely sink carved from a block of stone stands between the shower and room holding the camode. The Stickley furnishing is lovely. We were disappointed to find the rocker and foot stool had been removed. All and all a lovely get away
