History:
Built in 1842 the historic Simmstown Manor has lots to offer. The house was originally built by Harvey McElroy for his daughter, Mariah McElroy Simpson. The original owners were devastated by the Civil War and the property was then sold to John Simms. John Simms had amassed a great amount of wealth prior to the war and unlike many others was able to sustain it during the war and use it to purchase the sizable brick mansion and the surrounding lands. After a few years he owned the 2400 acres surrounding the great house. The Simms family completed a two story wing on the north side of the house and moved in in 1868. The house held many grand parties and entertainments during the Simms’ time and often opened its doors to the most prosperous and socially prominent families around. When John Simms wife, Sarah Celclia Simms, died in 1895 he surveyed his 2400 acres of land and divided it among each of his five surviving children. His youngest child, Mary Simms Smith was given Simmstown as her part of the property divide and her father continued to live with her until his death. Upon Mr. Simms' death Mary kept the house and it was passed through the family until 1983 when Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Kelly Jr., the great grandson of Mr. Simms decided to sell the house to the current owner, Mr. Larry Hodge. The house and grounds both went through an extensive renovation with efforts to keep historical aspects in as many ways possible.
Note: The home has security cameras to monitor the driveway, as a safety precaution. (This is required to be disclosed to renters.)
We stayed here with a group of 6 couples for a Bourbon Trail trip. The house was amazing and we especially loved the game room in the carriage house. We also took the owner's suggestion and booked Chef Gwyn for a private dinner which was so worthwhile. Enjoyed taking a walk by the pond and over to visit with the horses. Hope to visit again someday!
Absolutely gorgeous interior and furniture! The grounds were beautiful, beds were very comfortable and huge jacuzzi in bathroom. Enjoyed the large dining room and living room for gathering and laughing. Perfect location for the Bourbon Trail and also enjoyed the restaurants/shopping in Bardstown. This property was private and peaceful for relaxing- just what we were looking for!
My family rented this property to celebrate my son's graduation. We rent 5 or more VRBO properties per year and none is as nice as this property. Each room is a work of art. The mansion is a working horse and cattle farm and it was wonderfully relaxing just to watch. While we spent a great deal of time doing all the surrounding activities, we could not wait to return to this property just to continue to explore all the nooks and crannies. The house is filled with history, the architecture is wonderful, and the experience of staying in an authentic Kentucky mansion is not to be missed.
I am the Director of a non profit program for children. This is the second year that I have taken my managers (all ladies) on a work retreat. WOW what an amazing property! A well preserved and restored piece of history with ALL the modern comforts. We had a wonderful 3 night stay at the Manor. The vote is for us to return here again next year!
Our group of 9 (ages 4 to 77) rented the main house and the carriage house. We had plenty of room and everything felt clean. The house is just as gorgeous as the photos show. My daughter loved sleeping in her “princess bed” and keeps asking when we can go back to the manor. One day my husband drove around the area searching for bourbon that he can’t find in South Carolina. He came home with many new bottles. Mostly we just enjoyed the property and family time by walking around the grounds, making s’mores in the fire pit, interacting with the horses and cows, and playing soccer and board games. This is a special place.
The pictures don’t do this beautiful property justice. If you think it’s beautiful in pictures you need to see it in person. I’ve found a lot of hidden gems on VRBO but this is the best. We celebrated my husband’s 40th anniversary with 11 people total. The extra house gave us the perfect amount of rooms and a great place to hang out.
Simmstown Manor exceeded our expectations in every way! The house is beautifully furnished and the grounds were immaculate. Our large group enjoyed the outdoor patio and the many sitting areas inside. We cooked meals in the well equipped kitchen and dined in the large dining room. Simmstown Manor is near all of the popular distilleries, horseracing, historical landmarks, and Mammoth Caverns.
This manor exceeded our expectations! The rooms were huge and well decorated with antiques. The grounds were beautiful and spacious. We came to visit distilleries and decided to cancel our plans Sat evening in Bardstown in order to come back to the house and enjoy our surroundings. A bit off the beaten path but offered secluded country setting for our party.
This place is better than words can explain. Always a great stay.
When you first walk into the home you can sense the great care given to this home. It has all the character of a home built in the mid 1800’s but with the conveniences of a modern day home. I do not want to exclude the remarkable land this home sits on. Too much to describe, but you will love the moment you reach the peak of the mound in the back of the property. Our group had a wonderful time and we felt honored to stay in such a lovely home.
Simmstown Manor exceeded all of our expectations! It was the perfect place for our family gathering- the amazing manor, fun carriage house, beautiful lake & grounds made it the perfect setting. Larry was a gracious host and we loved our personal tour of the house with him. We also hired Chef Gwyn to make a special birthday dinner- it was delicious! If you are thinking of booking this place - don't hesitate! It's a rare find.
We had an amazing time celebrating Dad’s 80th birthday! The property is just beautiful and the pictures don’t do it justice! I can’t imagine a better setting for a family get together.
Even better than the photos. A gorgeous home built in the 1840s but meticulously maintained. Luxurious and genteel. The owner gave us the history of the home.
Group of eight really enjoyed the stay. House and property are just gorgeous. So many rooms for relaxing and enjoying each other's company. KBT 2022 was one for the books!
Exceeded expectations. The description of the property was very accurate. The beauty and condition of the property was great. The host was responsive and friendly. We couldn’t ask for anything more.
My friends and I stayed here for a weekend. Gorgeous property with so much to offer. Will definitely be coming back for another stay!
Wonderful. It was the most beautiful home any of us ever stayed in. A perfect place for us. The property owner was attentive. Even checking on us during the week.
