Stay in one of Michigan’s oldest homes, a charming retreat in the heart of Saugatuck. Perfect for families or groups, it features 2 kitchens, vaulted ceilings, and a wood-burning fireplace. Outdoors, enjoy a shaded deck, yard games, fire pit, and grill. Walk to Lake Michigan beaches and downtown Saugatuck, where art galleries, dining, and small-town charm make it a perfect year-round getaway.

The Space:

Welcome to The Elizabeth House, a piece of Saugatuck history. Originally built in 1834 as a farmhouse for surrounding land purchased in 1833, this charming home blends its rich past with modern comfort. The original structure, complete with attic dormers and timeless character, along with later additions in the 20th century, now offers travelers a warm and inviting retreat just steps from both the lake and downtown. This 4-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom Saugatuck retreat combines historic charm with modern comfort, making it perfect for multi-generational travel, small groups, or families.

The home features two kitchens—one on each floor—ideal for group travel, plus a formal dining room for six and a kitchen counter with seating for four. Gather in the living room with its vaulted ceilings and wood-burning fireplace, or spread out across the spacious layout with bedrooms on both levels: two on the first floor (including a king primary and a double) and two upstairs (a king and a queen) as well as 1 twin foldaway bed for upstairs.

Outdoors, enjoy a large wooden deck shaded by mature trees, perfect for morning coffee or evening dinners. The yard is made for fun with games like badminton, soccer, and volleyball, plus a fire pit and propane grill for relaxed nights under the stars. With a long driveway that fits up to 8 cars and 4 bikes for adults and 2 for kids, exploring Saugatuck is easy.

Best of all, you’re walkable to downtown, the Kalamazoo River, and Lake Michigan’s beaches—giving you the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.

Whether you’re here for a family vacation, group getaway, or year-round escape, this historic home invites you to experience the charm and beauty of Saugatuck in a setting unlike any other.

Things to Do:

Outdoors & Recreation: Spend the day at Oval Beach—ranked one of the best in the country according to National Geographic and Conde Naste—explore the dunes on a hike, or take a paddleboard or kayak out on the Kalamazoo River.

Arts & Shopping: Wander through art galleries, boutique shops, and local markets in the quaint walkable downtown.

Local Favorites: Catch a ride on the historic Saugatuck Chain Ferry, explore Mount Baldhead for panoramic views, or book a sunset cruise on Lake Michigan aboard the stern paddler wheeler The Star of Saugatuck.

Dining:

Saugatuck’s culinary scene is packed with flavor. Enjoy fresh, seasonal dishes at The Southerner, locally sourced fine dining at Everyday People Café, wood-fired pizza and craft beer at The Mitten Brewing Co., or an iconic stop at Phil’s Bar & Grille. For a sweet treat, don’t miss a cone from Charlie’s Round the Corner Ice Cream.

A Four-Season Destination:

Summer: Beach days, boat rides, outdoor concerts, and vibrant festivals make it the most popular season.

Fall: Crisp air, brilliant foliage, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and fall harvest events create a cozy retreat.

Winter: Saugatuck transforms into a charming snow-covered getaway with cross-country skiing, holiday markets, and fireside dining.

Spring: Wildflowers bloom along trails, art fairs return, and it’s the perfect time to stroll the harbor and enjoy the quiet beauty of the town before our high season kicks in.

I liked the size of this property. There was enough space for my family of 10. Kids loved the big yard. I didn't like all the insects/critters inside the house. The house felt abandoned.

Amazing host and a beautiful destination for winter weather! JMK, was a wonderful host, very attentive to every detail. When an unexpected snowstorm hit, he shoveled us all out by hand. If you ever watched home alone 1, this house had that kind of vibe. There was beautiful art and history everywhere you looked. The weather kept us inside, but with the fully stocked game closet, the libraries, and filled to the brim with art you can google search we were well entertained. When we arrived, we were greeted by a printed history of the house, a handwritten note, and a warm fire in the fireplace. JMK, was the consummate host!

Wonderful stay for two nights. Plenty of bedrooms for a full family plus friends. Backyard is huge with a nice deck/patio with outdoor games and a beautiful fire pit. Very convenient location, near everything. Only complaint is that two of the four bedroom window air conditioners are incredibly loud and we were unable to use them as they kept us awake. There were ceiling fans that did help in those two rooms. If the AC units are replaced/updated we would have no complaints. The owner left a very detailed note upon check-in with direct cell phone to contact in case of issues. I would not question staying here again.

We (8 women) had a wonderful time staying in this old house with lots of character. We spent most of the time outside on the deck (quiet and private due to the greenery). The house is close to the beach, town, restaurants, and activities. It was well stocked including plenty of bath towels and beach towels. We recommend the Interurban bus (call in advance), Oval Beach, Dune Rides, Fenn Valley Vineyards, and the Windmill Island Gardens.

This is a beautiful home with tons of space for large families vacationing together. My only complaint is the air conditioning was not on when we arrived at the property, and the house was about 84. We got there late and wanted to go right to bed, but it was just too hot to be comfortable. My recommendation for the property owner would be to make sure the air is running so their guests are comfortable upon arrival. I'm sure it's expensive to cool a house down this size, but that could be a deal breaker for me in the future.

Although we only spent one night at Elizabeth house our stay was perfect! This home is very large with all the nooks and crannies that I personally love plus comfortable beds, oodles of books to read, tons of cool artwork and other things to look at but I wouldn’t recommend staying here with little ones who don’t yet have the control or ability to keep their hands to themselves! The house is quaint with historical charm. By all accounts the beds were comfortable. We stayed in the winter and so can't speak to the outside amenities. We also didn't travel into town, so I can't speak to that either. The only criticism is that the elders in the family had a hard time finding the house as it is back off the road and the numbers are nailed up on a tree. Admittedly, I also had a moment looking for the house, but I was looking during daylight hours so it was easier to find. Everyone enjoyed the house in all of its charm. My six year old was fine, but if you have toddlers, you may need to be on high alert as there are a lot of pieces of art and objects that little hands would love to grab. There are two bedroom on the first floor, that we put the elders in so they didn't have to navigate the stairs. One was a King and the other was either a Queen or a Full bed. Upstairs is a King four-poster and a Full bed in the next room. Would recommend.

A group of friends and I reserved The Elizabeth House for an all-girls holiday board party. It was such a cozy location and all 8 of us kept commenting how we want to come back in the summer. It's an amazing location. The house is huge! Majority of our time qas spent in the living/dining area which was a little cramped for a large party but as long as yiur group all likes eachother it makes for a better time ;) Service is a little spotty and we had some issues with the wifi (could have been user error) but it didn't hinder our stay. The only thing that could have made the stay better is a bluetooth speaker - we forgot ours! And, if there was one we couldn't find it. PS the beds are SO comfy!

No old home smell which my sister is always worried about! 😂 Oh and thanks for having Static Guard in the laundry area! Life saver!! The only bummer was the TV situation as the guys wanted to watch the football game, but were unable to due to no cable. Otherwise, it was a great location and property! Tip: If you are coming home when its dark leave a light on outside! It gets quite dark in the driveway area!

Truly a place with history. This 1834 home reminds me of the literary works by Vernon Lee, and is the perfect accommodation for art, history, and literature buffs - who will find the charming nooks and crannies of this house perfect for getting lost in. Although there are plenty of modern amenities, we were delighted to be surrounded by beautiful traditional Persian rugs, glowing oil paintings, and various vintage tchotchkes. Coming back to this romantic house after coffeeshop and bookstore-hopping was the perfect ending to our time in Saugatuck. We were a small group and very much enjoyed the opportunity to take a step back in time. Thank you, John Matthew for your gracious hospitality, we will definitely be back!

I was finally able to get ahold and was told he thought we weren’t coming until tomorrow. As we waited he cleaned the upper floor and had to leave and come back later to finish. House was still dirty. Dusty and grout upstairs bathroom dirty. There was a smell of fish coming from kitchen.

I rented the Elizabeth house for my daughter and her Bridal party to stay the night before her wedding at the Ivy House and then our family stayed there after the wedding. It was such a quaint, fun, historic house with all the needed space, close to the venue and well appointed for all we needed. Enjoyed a bon fire and relaxation the night before with 11 of us (as we used an air mattress for one person). The driveway is long so could hold all our cars. I booked this trip for a weekend in Saugatuck with my former coworkers for a mini reunion. It was the perfect location and size for our group of six. There was plenty of room to spread out. The beds were very comfortable and the water pressure in the showers was great. It is walkable to downtown, probably around a mile. It is an old historic home but is nicely decorated, and it was very clean. The patio in the back and the outdoor fire pit are amazing! We had no issues during our weekend rental. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a rental for a group.
