Welcome to the Wheeler Mitchell House

Nestled in the Don Juan Filhoil Historic District, the Wheeler Mitchell House sits right across from the Ouachita River, offering a peaceful retreat steeped in history. Originally part of a homestead dating back to the early 1800s, this home was built in 1928 by one of the homestead owner’s sons. While the original homestead house no longer stands, the property retains its majestic oak trees, lively squirrels, and Southern charm.

Built before the levee was constructed, this home once stood along what was called South Beverport Street. Though it has been remodeled to include modern comforts, the original hardwood floors, doors, and woodwork remain, preserving its timeless character. The landscaping is mature and well-maintained, while the bathroom blends contemporary updates with classic charm.

With a new HVAC system, high-speed Wi-Fi, and memory foam beds, the home offers a comfortable and nostalgic atmosphere, reminiscent of grandparents’ houses, especially with its classic kitchen design.

The property is charming. I grew up in WM and didn't know of the house. The owner has done an amazing job of remodeling. All was very updated and comfortable. Beds were extremely comfortable. House was immaculate. Two things to consider but they are not biggies: some steps for the back bedroom bed would be nice and more mirrors. Since there's only one bath, more mirrors will allow prep time elsewhere. We did use the mirror in the formal dining room but no electrical outlets were there. The owner communicated and was very attentive. We felt safe. We would go back, and it will be excellent for us when we go in to visit with family who are still in the area.

This a very quiet area. We really liked that it was so close to everything. Our dog loves the big back yard as she sniffed and played most of the day.

This was a very charming, historic house! So cute! The porch was a nice place to visit. The house was very clean and had an extra roll out bed for use with extra linens. The house had plenty of security offerings and we felt safe. The hosts were very responsive and helped with any questions we had. As an aside, one of the beds in a bedroom is fairly tall, so could be tricky for some, but didn’t affect our situation. We’d stay here again if given the opportunity.

Great place to stay. We were comfortable and had everything we needed. Back yard was great to let dogs out. They were comfortable in the house too. Easy to get in and about Monroe. Recommend staying here!! We were here March 2026

I stayed at the Mitchell House 45 days as I was completing work before moving from the state. It was well-suited to my needs and close to my office, stores, and more. I enjoyed the quirkiness of the old house - its back screen door that slammed, the smooth wooden floors, the old doors with glass knobs and the screened-in porch. The house is well-outfitted and particularly suitable for a longer stay. Chris and Jade were responsive hosts. Thank you for allowing me to stay.

It would be nice if the porch light was left on and the house nights be lite since we arrived late. We had a difficult time finding the correct door and no light to get out the key. Departing instructions should be included in the rules and the information on getting hot water when taking a shower.
