Lake George, New York
Called "The Owl's Nest", this summer lake house, with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a dock, is listed on the National Historic Registry, a beautiful craftsman-style home built by noted 19th century writer/historian Edward Eggleston (see Wikipedia).
The master bedroom downstairs, with 1 queen bed, has a full bath off to one side; another door leads to the stone "loggia" or porch, my personal favorite spot. A large bay window and fireplace (unused) with inlaid tile adds to the charm of this room.
Detailed wood paneling and 13' ceilings throughout the 1st floor.
There are two bedrooms and one full bath upstairs.
The first bedroom at the top of the stairs is smaller, with one full size bed and one
single bed tucked next to a dormer. The other much larger bedroom has one near-
queen size bed and one single bed. A rollaway bed is stored in the closet.
Guests may use the balcony which opens toward the lake. There is also a sitting area near the flat screen TV. Windows and balcony doors are designed to be open to catch
the breeze in the summer.
The wood paneled living room has a piano, a large fireplace (unused) and antique furniture mixed with some contemporary furniture. At the far side of the living room,
the dining area features a round table nestled next to a large bay window looking out on the lake. For more informal dining or grilling, the picnic table on the deck next to
the kitchen fits the bill.
Amenities include a newly remodeled kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and granite counters, a 40 foot long 2-pier dock with swimmer's ladder, screened-in porch
overlooking the lake, an upstairs balcony, deck with grill and picnic table, and sweeping views of the lake, fields and woods in a private setting.
Also included: Wi-Fi, line phone, cable TV, 32 inch flat-screen, large micro-wave oven, conventional oven, dishwasher, coffee maker, dinette table and small bar, a large capacity washer and dryer, tuned upright piano and central heating.
Guests can swim off the "U-dock", use our canoe to explore the bay and creek, and even tie up your own boat!
In addition, guests have access to the Mountainside Free Library, located on the
general property, which was founded by Edward Eggleston.
For fresh deli food and groceries, check out Cleverdale Country Store, only a mile or so away on the east side of the lake.
Lake George Village, famous for its attractions, is 5 miles away.
In the other direction about the same distance, Glens Falls has a variety of supermarkets and stores.
We were greeted by a beautiful fireworks display from a boat about 100 feet from our dock on our first night, which was a wonderful surprise. The rooms and hallways were large, the screened in porch was ideally situated facing the lake for a coffee in the mornings. We were a short drive to town. The furniture was comfortable, and the tutor itself was very charming with ornate designs and woodwork within.
Charming old cottage right on Lake George. Location is far enough away from town that it’s quiet but easy enough to access shops, restaurants, etc. Very chill relaxing spot, kids had a blast swimming and fishing.
We had a great stay at the Owl's Nest! The home was clean and included everything we would need during the stay. Communication with Bill was great. He provided all of the information regarding check-in when needed and was quick to respond to questions. We brought our boat with us and kept it tied up at the private dock for the week. The dock was nice and the location was convenient to Dunham's Bay Marina. If you have an appreciation for history take the time to admire the history of the home and its origins. Recommended rental from a family who rents in LG almost every year. Thanks Bill!
Very unique building. Sort of a mini castle. A trip back in time, specifically 1885. The setting of the building is very private and it has a lovely view of Dunham's Bay. Enjoyed use of the dock and canoe. The rooms are large and spacious.
A true pre-era vintage historic cottage. Great location just minutes from the village. U-shaped dock in a sheltered bay. If you like an old school vibe it’s perfect!
Location of this home was great. With a few changes this could be better. Would suggest buying a complete set of linens bath mats, wash clothes, towels, sheets and pillow cases. If you removed a few pieces of furniture , would seem more spacious. It was very dark inside, not much you can do about that, but better lighting and electrical fixtures would help immensely. The kitchen was very usable, bathrooms could use a little work.
Owl's nest is a beautiful cottage located on quiet Dark Bay just off the main lake which makes it perfect for canoeing and kayaking.. The cottage is nice and full of history. Cute and quirky and overall, lovely. Bill, the property owner, was very responsive to our emails and accommodating to our needs.
Returning to spend some time on a boat in Lake George was great. The property had nice access to a calm bay and a great dock to use if you rent or have a boat. House had a nice new kitchen and when the grill didn’t work the owner replaced that night (thank you). Dust could have been removed from fans and screened when windows and weeds could have been knock down, but it made it a bit more “Adirondacky”. Had a wonderful time.
The house is lovely and historic. They had everything you could need and was very clean. We had our boat at the dock and that worked great. Swimming off the dock was fun too. Loved our stay!
Everything was great, Bill. Thanks so much!
