Berkeley's historic Elmwood House is a 1905 Edwardian duplex and prominent landmark in Berkeley's sought-after Elmwood district. It is one of Berkeley's earliest homes replete with original built-ins, woodwork, and period architectural details such as coved high ceilings, leaded glass window panes, and pocket doors, and has the grand spaces and elegant details of a bygone era. The interior space feels grand and elegant especially when the rooms are open on to each other which allows for a spacious living and or entertaining space.

Located in the south side of Berkeley about nine blocks from the Cal campus, the Elmwood has not changed much since the early 1900’s. You will find tree-lined streets with beautiful gardens; a flat, walkable terrain and an easy 5-minute walk to College Avenue from the property. Known for its brown-shingle homes, California bungalows, great cafes, restaurants—and its vibrant history, the Elmwood is one of Berkeley's most coveted neighborhoods.

The property is located on a quiet cul-de-sac in a family-friendly neighborhood where there are two children's parks within a half-block of the house. College Avenue is a short 3 blocks away or 5-minute walk. The terrain is flat, easy to walk and has a 97 WalkScore. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is approximately a 15-minute walk from the property, and the 51 bus is only five minutes away. UC Berkeley holds 27 libraries which are well worth a visit and the campus is a beautiful green place to walk, with many redwoods, meandering waterways and several great restaurants, There is no shortage of cultural events and places to see on the UC Berkeley campus such as: CAL Performances, the Berkeley Art Museum; classical music performances for free on Wednesdays at noon...and so much more. The East Bay and the San Francisco Bay Area in general--is home to many parks; wonderful hiking trails; golfing ranges; swimming and tennis.

The Berkeley Fire Trail hike is just five minutes away and where one is rewarded with panoramic 360° San Francisco bay views after an uphill hike. Tilden, Chabot, Redwood, Temescal and Sibley Regional Parks are just minutes away, and provide everything from wedding venues to beaches, lakes, hiking, golfing, an animal farm, horse-riding, water sports and more. The CAL Recreation Center is just five minutes away and provides three lap pools and children's swimming in a verdant and lush green setting with a stunning backdrop of mature redwood and oak trees.

The property is ideally located within walking distance of College and Telegraph Avenues where you will find fine dining, ethnic restaurants, bookstores, a movie theatre, Berkeley's university campus, and more. Walk to historic Telegraph Avenue, or stroll along College Avenue, from the Rockridge District at one end and the California College of Art to the University of California of Berkeley (CAL) at the other end.

The entire stretch of College Avenue is lined with restaurants and places to shop. The local movie theatre is a 5-minute walk from the house and right in the hub of Elmwood. San Francisco is only 8 miles away and easily accessible by BART. (10 blocks from house). Monterey and Carmel are approximately a 2-hour drive from the property and the wine country, Napa Valley and Sonoma are about an hour's drive.

We loved staying in Elmwood, and this charming flat was perfectly located for walking, biking and easy access to everything. There is plenty of space to spread out, entertain guests and relax.

We found this beautiful home to be in a great area, in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood of Berkeley. The house was much larger than we expected, and we loved the open living spaces with pocket doors that divided them. We have family in Berkeley, and come out at least once a year. The location was perfect for us as it was flat and we were able to walk everywhere. Restaurants and coffee places on College Avenue were only a five minute walk through beautiful streets of old brown-shingle homes and rambling gardens. We walked to the UC Berkeley campus several days a week, enjoyed our regular visits to the Free Speech Cafe, and discovered a map and book existed (at the much loved Dalloway's Book store on college) which mapped the many oak and redwood trees on campus. We also visited a great selection of cafes on and off campus--our favorites were Cafe Nefeli on the north side, and Cafe Strada on the south side. We visited the Hearst Anthropology Museum - a must-see on campus, and also the award-winning Berkeley Art Museum in downtown Berkeley. The 27 libraries on the Cal campus are well worth visiting. Check out the Morrison and the Asian library - both stunning! We'll be back hopefully!

We had a wonderful stay here. Came to visit family and stayed at this house for the third time. We love it here obviously. It is a quiet, friendly, and peaceful neighborhood, and we can walk everywhere - even to dinner in the evening, theater, and UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall! The neighborhood is charming and beautiful and there are so many unique and historic properties and tree-lined streets. Our grand-kids love the two parks that are less than a 5-minute walk from the house, and the gourmet Ici ice cream on college Avenue. (There's often a line outside.) We loved walking along college Avenue and having dinner out in the evening. Walking around campus is also one of our favorite things to do - lots of beautiful buildings, and many oaks and redwoods. We love the Faculty Club, a Julia Morgan designed building on campus, and now restaurant where we had dinner every week. We will be back again!

My family and I travel A LOT...and let me say that we have rarely found a house that is so lovely, inviting, clean, well appointed, and in such a perfect neighborhood. We could truly walk to the market and shops, plus many fabulous restaurants. (Maura has excellent suggestions, and within the house, a lovely binder filled with information about the area, including restaurants, attractions, etc.) There is a playground up the block, so if you have little ones, this is a plus. It is also just a quick drive to SF and many other surrounding attractions, Muir Woods, Sausalito, etc. Maura was so accommodating for our children as well, aged 4 yrs and 15 mos. It was a wonderful treat to have not only the feeding chair, baby bathtub, baby bed, blankets, toys, and excellent books, to name some of the items provided...but, to have ones which were of such lovely quality. Thanks, Maura, for a fun, comfortable and relaxing stay. All best, The Groves Family

Situated at the end of the street, surrounded by gardens and park benches, and a playground a stone throw away, this home could not have been more ideal for our family. The confined terrace allowed for grilling and a safe place for the kids to play outside. Our hostess’ hospitality was impeccable, and we immediately felt at home. The house was well-equipped, very clean and comfortable. To top off the perfect experience, just a few blocks away were quaint shops and delicious ice cream.

Nestled on a quiet street in the quaint and lively neighborhood of Elmwood, a charming house all bedecked in roses and passion vine awaited our arrival. We were warmly greeted by our hostess who exuded hospitality. Much to our delight we had found our home away from home to celebrate the marriage of our son. This Elmwood home is an architectural delight--boasting original trim and lovely built-in cupboards. We found it very clean, comfortable and cheerful, decorated in light coors reflecting the Berkeley sunlight, making it warm and cozy. It is a house of function as well as beauty. There is plenty of room for play and activity, and quality bed linens for good sleeping. The house boasts a fully equipped kitchen next to an expansive semi-formal dining room where a large table awaits good food a cheerful society of folk. we enjoyed breakfast on the private outside terrace. the location is perfect, tucked away and quiet but easy walking through lovely streets to cafes and shopping. It offered us a great place to work, to relax, and to celebrate. I whole-heartedly recommend this has the perfect spot to stay for any occasion.

We stayed here with 4 adults and 2 children. The location was fantastic, the area lovely to walk in. The house was very well equipped. Great Whole Foods Store just down the street. There was only one bathroom and the kitchen was a little crowded for two cooks but we would definitely stay there again! Maura was very helpful and made great suggestions on what to do with children and where to shop. Also helped us get a parking pass, so we did not have to move our second car every 2 hours. Our son used the garage for his rental car.

The apartment is gorgeous, wonderfully located for exploring a great area of Berkeley (and with good walking access to BART for travel into SF), and could not be better appointed for traveling with kids. The owner, Maura, actually purchased extra baby/kid gear when she learned our group would include two toddlers and two infants. The house was already stocked with toys, books, videos, a great high-chair, and a child's aerobed, but she bought two pack-n-play portable cribs, a baby bath tub, and a toddler tub for us to use. Given that she bent over backwards to make the place kid-friendly, we were amazed at how beautifully decorated it was. As other reviews have mentioned, the linens are wonderful and the beds are very comfortable. The space was big enough for six adults and four kids, and we hosted a dinner for twelve adults one evening. The washer dryer was also a huge plus for our group. Really, it couldn't have been nicer!

We rented this house for my mom for the week before our wedding. It was perfect. It was perfectly situated, the house itself was spectacular and served as the place where my mom met my future mother-in-law for the first time. We had a nice dinner with my mother, my now husband, my aunt and my future mother and sister in law. It was the perfect setting. The house was beautiful, and very well-maintained. Maura was very helpful with any questions we had about the house and area. It was exactly what we expected, clean, and in a great area. Close to College Ave. the house was close to supermarkets and shopping and movie theater.
