A cottage full of character in rural Margaret River, inspired by the original local Grumblebum.
Once upon a time, tucked away among the trees and winding country roads of Margaret River, there lived a man known to all as the Grumblebum. He wasn’t truly grumpy, not really, but he did have a habit of muttering at the kettle, sighing at the weather, and insisting he wasn’t tired just moments before dozing off by the fire.
This cottage was his kingdom. Just 10 minutes from town, close to the region’s beloved wineries and beautiful beaches, yet surrounded by birdsong, native bushland, and the quiet rhythm of country life. Families would visit, laughter would echo through the rooms, and somehow, every guest left a little lighter than when they arrived. The Grumblebum would never admit it, but he built this place for exactly that.
The Space
Step through the front door and into the heart of the home, where the Grumblebum spent most of his days. The open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area centres around a crackling wood fireplace, his favourite companion on cool evenings. There’s no television here, much to his approval, only the sound of stories being told, board games being won and lost, and the occasional dramatic sigh when someone burns the toast.
The kitchen is well equipped for all manner of feasts, from pancake mornings to long, lazy dinners. With an oven, microwave, dishwasher, Nespresso coffee machine, and all the essentials, it’s ready for whatever the day brings. Just beyond, sliding doors open onto the veranda, where he would sit, cup in hand, watching the garden do as it pleased. Comfortable seating invites you to do the same.
Outdoors is where the magic lingers. A large round dining table and BBQ set the scene for shared meals under open skies, while the firepit waits patiently for stories to be told beneath the stars. The garden, a little wild and wonderfully alive, is home to birds, breezes, and the occasional curious visitor.
Wander further inside and you’ll find a quiet study nook, a place the Grumblebum claimed was for “important thinking”, though it was mostly for reading and the occasional nap. Beyond this sits the master bedroom, complete with a queen bed, walk-in robe, and private ensuite with shower and toilet. Sliding doors open to a secluded outdoor space, a secret little corner of the cottage.
On the other side of the house are two more bedrooms, one with a queen bed, and another with a bunk featuring a double bed below (the top bunk, wisely, remains unused). These rooms share the main bathroom, complete with both bath and shower, perfect for washing off a day of exploring.
Upstairs, a shared bedroom offers a single bed and a double bed, a space that feels like it belongs to children and their imaginations. There’s also a TV here, quietly tucked away, though the Grumblebum always insisted the best entertainment was downstairs.
A spacious laundry with washing machine and separate toilet ensures all the practical comforts are taken care of, even in a house built on stories.
