Portland, Oregon
The Alley House is a small independent structure accessed through a very quiet, paved alley.
You can park your car in the garage, walk up the stairs to the small veranda equipped with outdoor furniture.
From there you enter the unit. There is a gas fireplace to keep you warm in the winter and a window AC to keep you cool during the summer.
We have a fully equipped kitchen, ideal for longer stays.
Walking distance to several grocery stores, restaurants and even the Convention Center.
This apartment over a garage is in an alley so we expected a typical alley experience. It is anything but that. The alley is more like a small street with lots of activity that would normally be on the main street. The apartment was well furnished, very clean and stocked with a full kitchen including dishes and flatware, cooking devices and even a few spices that might be needed. The linens were adequate although we bought pillows from a local department store since the ones provided are pretty harsh. Also, you have to like beds just off the floor to really appreciate the sleeping arrangement. The television was equipped with only the basic internet connection so we had to use our Chromecast in order to view anything we really wanted. The wireless was second rate so we had to rely on our cell phone hotspot to be online. The owners were responsive and very nice. Unfortunately for us, we booked a three month stay while looking to purchase a house. We found an ideal property in a month and had paid for three so lost several thousand dollars in the process. Be careful about your timing of your stay!
We stayed at the Alley house for 1 month with our 7 month old daughter while we were transitioning from Germany back to Portland. Esther was so nice and helpful. And the apartment is new, clean, and has everything you would need for a stay in Portland. We had what we thought was a small leak in the bathroom (turns out it was my fault - condensation caused by steaming veggies for home made baby food- oops). But when I called Esther she was very responsive and helpful. Other plus is the location and parking in the garage, which with a baby was great! Thank you Esther for a lovely stay!
The Alley House is a cozy apartment that we loved to call home for the month we stayed in Portland. This well designed space is beautifully equipped both functionally and esthetically. It offers complete privacy in a quiet residential neighborhood in one of the nicest areas in Portland. All of the necessities are within a short walk, yet the central location makes getting around the greater Portland area very easy. The owners are thoughtful, attentive and responded promptly to our questions. The apartment is nicely maintained and the furnishings make for a very comfortable and welcoming place that feels like home. We are frequent VRBO renters and this is a special place and a great value!
The Alley House was our home from home for three months this fall. We could not have been more comfortable. The apartment is brilliantly designed and decorated with lovely original artwork. The kitchen was larger than you might expect for such a small space and very well equipped. Having a secure garage was a bonus that also gave us space to store our bicycles. Many evenings in the early fall were spent on the charming porch. The alley is very quiet at night with nothing to interrupt a good night's sleep. We look forward to returning.
This adorable apartment is stylish, clean, comfortable, and great fun. Everything you need is there, whether cooking a meal with fresh supplies from a farmer's market, reading by the fireplace, or on the porch watching the sunset. It's easy to get to any other neighborhood or hop on the freeway to go to the beach or the mountains. I rarely used my car, just my bike or the train. Get a bike map and learn Portland that way, especially the Esplanade on the waterfront and the Springwater Trail. The owners are interesting people who will take care of you well. The neighborhood has beautiful homes and landscaping and shopping and restaurants are nearby. Don't miss the guided tour of the Japanese Gardens.
We spent the months of September and October in the Alley House while we looked for a home here in Portland. The property is a wonderful retreat in a beautiful neighborhood. The unit is nicely appointed with everything you could need for your stay. The owners provide you with complete privacy even though the are only a backyard away, but are willing to help in any way to make your stay comfortable. The unit is located in Portland's NE neighborhood full of wonderful old homes, beautiful gardens and an excellent local shops and restaurants with in short walking distance. The neighborhood is also close to downtown and the Pearl District providing access to museums, theaters, local shops and restaurants offering meals prepared with locally grown fruits and vegetable, along with fresh seafood from the coast. We had an excellent stay and would gladly return had we not found a home of our own in the city. We do recommend the Alley House to friends and family that come to visit. You will not regret staying here if you can find a time slot that is vacant. Go properties like this are hard to find. Book it if you find a time vacant that fits your schedule or changes your schedule if there is a time vacant as it won't be for very long.
I rented the utterly charming alley house twice in 2011 for a month each time. This place will always be my first choice to stay. It is secure, private, clean, comfortable, and well appointed with a delightful porch to enjoy the mornings and evenings. All photos and descriptions are very accurate. The owner is genuine, warm, and gracious. Shopping ammenities are superb in the neighborhood with ecletic shops, unique bookstores, two farmers' markets, restaurants galore and a super mall with movie theaters and ice rink. Public transportation is so convenient to downtown and to the city's other unique neighborhoods. The garage is certainly a plus if you prefer to have a car. I would recommend this vacation home to anyone who truely desires to experience a wonderful Portland neighborhood. Put a bird on it!
The Alley House Apartment is ideally situated so that is quiet and yet a short walk to shopping and restaurants. It is fully equipped so that when we come from a long tiring flight we just quickly unpack our bags and we are done. We are very comfortable there. We have stayed twice now and hope to come back next year as we have family in the area. Esther and her family are gracious hosts, never intrusive. The neighbors are pleasant and there is a garage for parking. We feel very safe and at home when we stay at the Alley House Apartment.
We found this apartment to be comfortable, well furnished, tastefully put together, and very comfortable for our month long research stay. Big windows in the living room/kitchen space brought in good northern light. Secure garage and independent entrance, a lot of privacy and quiet, plenty of storage space for bikes, clothing, food. We especially enjoyed the easy access (a few blocks) to shopping, groceries, restaurants, train line, and it was only 15 minutes by bike to downtown. Wonderful trees in the neighborhoods, lots of good walks near by. We would definitely return!
I adored my stay in this alley house! It's a lovely oasis nestled in the beautiful and historic Sullivan's Gulch neighborhood. Beautifully-appointed with everything you could need for a comfortable stay. I especially enjoyed lounging on the lovely porch and snuggling up in front of the fireplace. It was a perfect home away from home!
