Book your vacation at the ultimate modern vacation rentals in the rugged outbackof the Big Bend region. In a land of endless mountain and desert vistas that is famed for ghost town ruins, rustic adobes, and Old West ranch homes, the Fossil Knob Ridge vacation rentals offer a unique contrast. The ultra-modern vacation rentals at Fossil Knob Ridge are contemporary homes built from recycled shipping containers. Yes, you read that right. These vacation rental homes are constructed from big metal boxes that were originally used for transporting cargo across the globe on trains and ocean freighters. The owner purchased them from a shipping company and converted them into contemporary and stylish living spaces. Don’t worry though, they are far more than just metal boxes with some furniture. Indeed, these homes offer the most neoteric lodging in the Terlingua area.

Fossil Knob Ridge offers six separate units. Each rental is similarly styled but each is unique in size, layout, design, furnishings, amenities, views, and occupancy level. The rentals are named after some of the local cinnabar mines that were the basis of settlement of this region in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The Cinnabar House has two king beds and sleeps up to 4. The Chisos house sleeps up to three with a king bed and a sofa. The Quicksilver, Mariscal, Buena Suerte, and Sierra Vista rentals sleep two, with a king bed in each.

THIS LISTING IS FOR THE CINNABAR HOUSE.

The Cinnabar House at Fossil Knob Ridge is an ultra-modern home built from a forty-foot and a twenty-foot recycled shipping container joined together. The floorplan has an extremely efficient and space saving design while preserving a surprisingly spacious feel. It includes a large bedroom with a two king-size beds, a living and dining area, kitchenette, and full bathroom. The shaded patio offers additional living space for your comfort and enjoyment. Modern design, styling, and art are featured inside and out. Please view the photos for the best description.

This rental sleeps up to four guests on two king-sized beds.

If you have a larger group, or simply want more space, we recommend also booking additional rentals at Fossil Knob Ridge. Each of the homes have privacy and their own unique views. Check out our other Fossil Knob listings for more details.

All of the Fossil Knob Ridge Rentals are on the electric grid for reliable and ample electric power. Both are fully air-conditioned and heated and have modern electric appliances. Potable water is trucked in and stored in holding tanks for your use. There is plenty of water available but trucking it in is expensive. We ask that you conserve it, but not so much as to compromise your comfort.

Located just one-mile northwest of the world famous Terlingua Ghost Town and twenty miles northwest of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. Fossil Knob Ridge overlooks the Ghost Town and has breathtaking mountain views, including the Chisos Mountains and into Mexico.

Relax inside or on the shaded patio. Explore the fossil strewn 20-acre property. Drive or walk into the Ghost Town to explore the historic ruins, dine, drink, enjoy live music, or hang out with local and travelers from around the globe. If you play an instrument or sing, join in on an impromptu jam, session on the porch of the old trading post. Drive into Big Bend Nation Park or Big Bend Ranch State park for endless outdoor adventures. Book a river trip, jeep tour, horseback ride, mountain bike rental, guided hike, or guided hunt. Enjoy a controlled campfire. Marvel at the night skies. Watch the stunning sunrises and sunsets. Do as much or as little as you like. Then, come back again and do even more or even less.

Peaceful and quiet, this place was amazing. It was exactly what my family and I needed. I could not recommend d this place enough. It has all the necessities and communication was great. If you need a comfy place to stay after Big Bend and stargaze at night then this is your place.

Incredible spot. Great views: awesome sunrise over the national park, epic stars. Cool fire pit. The windows from the beds are so good. Fun easy 4x4 road to get in. Everything you need, nothing you don't.

Everything, starting from the initial email from the host with all the important information before the trip, and to the checkout process went smoothly and left a very pleasant impression. The house itself is remote from the crowded areas, and faces the great desert landscape from all the windows. It is spacious enough, has all the necessities in the kitchen and bathroom and equipped with a very nice patio, with a fi tree pit and a gas grill. Communication with the hosts was a pleasure. We can recommend this stay to everyone and will be returning next year.

My bestie and I were on a girl's hiking trip and stayed in the Cinnabar container. This was my first time staying in a container and I was not disappointed. The dark starry nights were amazing, and the location of the container brought endless views of the surrounding terrain and mountains in the background. There was plenty of room with the two king size beds, sitting area and a kitchen and bathroom complete with everything you may need. I would highly recommend staying in this container unit. The only thing I wish I would have known is that the bedroom shades are completely see-through and only provide shade from the sun and not for privacy (so change in the bathroom, not the bedroom).

Loved our stay at Fossil Knob Ridge Cinnabar house! Property was clean and well maintained. It is quite remote and a bit difficult to get to, but once you are there, the view makes it all worthwhile. The recommendations for things to do and places to eat were great as well. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this property to other travelers!

This peaceful property was the perfect home base of our Big Bend adventure. The beds were cozy and the views were beautiful. The terrain is a little rough getting to the house, but it was so worth it. The wind was intense our first night and you could really hear it whipping through the night, but the next two nights were much calmer. We were able to experience a gorgeous full moon while we were there, too. It was a great time!! The home was beautiful and well stocked. It had everything we needed. Thank you!

The property is perfect. Close proximity to Terlingua, Big Bend National Park, Lajitas and Big Bend Ranch State Park. The hosts had the place well stocked with everything you need (bbq grill included). Perfect spot for stargazing. If I could recommend one thing to bring, maybe a hammock or an outdoor chair that leans hack to give you a better view of the stars. I absolutely plan on staying here again. Super comfy beds and AC go a long way in the desert!!!

My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights while exploring Big Bend National Park and the surrounding areas. Everything was perfect. I particularly loved the secluded area combined with modern amenities. We experienced very warm days and nights below freezing and the rental home was able to handle both of those scenarios well. We used the toaster, coffee maker, oven, microwave and propane grill and all worked flawlessly. The bathroom was nicely finished and functional as well. Beds were super comfortable with gorgeous views every evening and morning out of the picture windows. We also used the chiminea for nightly camp fires. Overall, a great experience and perfect accomodations for our week long stay.

Wonderful stay; excellent views night/day. Dark skies with Stars and Milky Way to the horizon, QUIET! Property is up to date and clean modern. Comfortable for 4 adults. Road...rocky and a little rough, but ok if you take it Slow. Worth the trip and only 10-15 min from Terlingua. Owners/caretakers very good.
