Summary:
Fossil Knob Ridge One: Relax is Style at this Ultra-Modern Container Home Near Terlingua Ghost Town

The Space:
High Clearance Vehicle Recommended due to rough and rocky roads.

Book your vacation at the ultimate modern vacation rentals in the rugged outback of the Big Bend region. In a land of endless mountain and desert vistas that is famed for ghost town ruins, rustic adobes, and Old West ranch homes, the Fossil Knob Ridge vacation rentals offer a unique contrast. The ultra-modern vacation rentals at Fossil Knob Ridge are contemporary homes built from recycled shipping containers. Yes, you read that right. These vacation rental homes are constructed from big metal boxes that were originally used for transporting cargo across the globe on trains and ocean freighters. The owner purchased them from a shipping company and converted them into contemporary and stylish living spaces. Don’t worry though, they are far more than just metal boxes with some furniture. Indeed, these homes offer the most neoteric lodging in the Terlingua area.
Fossil Knob Ridge offers six separate units. Each rental is similarly styled but each is unique in size, layout, design, furnishings, amenities, views, and occupancy level. The rentals are named after some of the local cinnabar mines that were the basis of settlement of this region in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The Cinnabar House has two king beds and sleeps up to 4. The Chisos house sleeps up to three with a king bed and a sofa. The Quicksilver, Mariscal, Buena Suerte, and Sierra Vista rentals sleep two, with a king bed in each.

THIS LISTING IS FOR THE CHISOS HOUSE.

The Chisos House is an ultra-modern home built from two recycled shipping containers, one forty feet long and one twenty feet long. They are joined together at a 90° angle around a large, shaded patio. The forty contains the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The twenty contains the bathroom and bedroom. Modern design, styling, and art are featured inside and out. Please view the photos for the best description.

Chisos House sleeps two to three guests. The bedroom has a king-sized bed and the living room has a sofa. The sofa does not fold out but it can be used for one person to sleep on. If you have a larger group, or simply want more space, there are five modern vacation rental homes at Fossil Knob Ridge. We'd be happy to rent you more than one. Check out the other Fossil Knob Ridge listings. You are welcome to rent as many as you want.

All six of the Fossil Knob Ridge Rentals are on the electric grid for reliable and ample electric power. All are fully air-conditioned and heated and have modern electric appliances. Potable water is trucked in and stored in holding tanks for your use. There is plenty of water available but trucking it in is expensive. We ask that you conserve it, but not so much as to compromise your comfort.

Located just one mile northwest of the world famous Terlingua Ghost Town and twenty miles northwest of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. Fossil Knob Ridge overlooks the Ghost Town and has breathtaking mountain views, including the Chisos Mountains and into Mexico.

Relax inside the house or on the shaded patio. Explore the fossil strewn 20 acre property. Drive or walk into the Ghost Town to explore the historic ruins, dine, drink, enjoy live music, or hang out with local and travelers from around the globe. If you play an instrument or sing, join in on an impromptu jam, session on the porch of the old trading post. Drive into Big Bend Nation Park or Big Bend Ranch State park for endless outdoor adventures. Book a river trip, jeep tour, horseback ride, mountain bike rental, guided hike, or guided hunt. Enjoy a controlled campfire. Marvel at the night skies. Watch the stunning sunrises and sunsets. Do as much or as little as you like. Then, come back again and do even more or less.

Our six-day stay at Chisos House was fantastic. Property description exactly as listed - amazing sunrises, dark skies, and view of Big Bend NP. Communication from host prior to and during our stay was accurate (type of vehicle needed to access property and directions), helpful and prompt.Location is perfectly situated to enjoy time in both Big Bend National Park and Big Bend State Park Ranch. We probably wouldn’t have considered the State Park if the National Park facilities hadn’t been closed due to govt shutdown. Beautiful hikes in both BBNP and BBSPR with our three year old.

The property was secluded and quiet. It was a little slow getting to it but no problem for our well seasoned 4 wheel drive; excellent directions from the host! The kitchen was ideal with all full size appliances and a wealth of utensils and cookware. The bed was comfortable, not too firm or soft. The views were amazing! We spent most of our time on the patio when not out exploring the area. The grill worked perfectly and we cooked several meals there. The bathroom shower was huge and impressive; the extra small bathroom sink took some getting used to but it was manageable. A big thank you to the hosts who were very helpful. We will definitely stay there again!

We ran into an ant problem the host told us it was not common problem but there were 3 cans of ant spray under the sink. Also had to ration water but turning water on and off in the shower would have made nice to know when we booked the property

Our stay at Fossil Knob Ridge - Chisos was nothing short of incredible! The ultra-modern container home was spotless, thoughtfully designed, and packed with everything we needed for a comfortable and relaxing getaway. The panoramic views of the desert and distant mountains were absolutely breathtaking—sunrises and sunsets here are a must-see!We especially loved the attention to detail throughout the space, from the cozy bedding and sleek furnishings to the fully equipped kitchen. The remote, peaceful setting gave us a true escape while still being just a short drive to Big Bend National Park and Terlingua. This place is a perfect blend of style, serenity, and convenience. We’ll absolutely be recommending it to friends and can’t wait to return. Thank you for an unforgettable experience!

With all the over-priced, but underwhelming accommodations that have popped up in the area contrasted with ones that are past their prime, Fossil Knob is perfect. Easy access to the park and ghost town but still peaceful with great views.

Perfectly unique home base for a trip to Big Bend. My two kiddos and I visited in January and stayed for 3 nights. Wonderful vistas in the morning and night. The patio faces the sunrise, great view and peaceful way to start the day with coffee. Stars at night were amazing. Container is cozy, very comfortable, and totally workable.

Wow is all that I can say about the view from this property. Perched on top of the hill facing the mountains. Perfectly located to visit Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. Plenty of neat shops and restaurants within a mile of the house. A very neat container home. Well stocked with paper products and coffee supplies. There was a nice firepit for evenings watching the stars, and I do mean plenty of stars in the sky. If you are looking for a stay in the area, this is it.

This review is long overdue BUT my stay is not easily forgotten. What a wonderful location. The container home was conveniently located 1.5 miles to the Terlingua Ghost town. The road lets out right next to the old theater. The home was set up to face the mountains and sunrise and sunset were easily viewed everyday. We went when the moon was full and the temps were very mild and comfortable in the evenings. Everything was provided that we could need. There is a full grocery store in Alpine and a small one in Terlingua. Go to this place if you want ease of access, beautiful views, and off the path seclusion that is “just right”. I will stay here again.

The Chisos property at Fossil Knob Ridge is such a great place to stay when visiting the Terlingua/Big Bend area. The views are gorgeous and the stargazing is outstanding! While the trek up the last stretch of road is a little bumpy, it is very conveniently located and everything is just as described. There has also been a lot of thought and care put into the necessities and amenities available. We had an awesome stay!
