Cape Charles, Virginia
THE RAILROAD AND CAPE CHARLES: The southern tip of Virginia’s Eastern Shore made it financially possible for the railroad line to extend to this area in the early 1880s and to develop Cape Charles there (into 644 equal lots with seven avenues extending east to west named for Virginia statesmen and seven streets extending north and south named for fruits). By 1885 both the railroad and Cape Charles prospered because now trains could pick up produce along the Eastern Shore and transport it up north and also connect at Cape Charles with specially designed railroad freight barges that transported the produce south across the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk. In addition, now trains with passengers from as far away as New York could connect with passenger steamers transporting them across the Bay to Norfolk.
THE RAILROAD AND "BayPlace:" One of the first fine homes built in Cape Charles was the grand home of the Railroad’s Superintendent, which is now named “BayPlace” in honor of the Railroad's founding of Cape Charles on the Chesapeake Bay. Later in 1893 “BayPlace” became the home of Tom Dixon, Jr., a colorful, controversial and notorious, historic character who at times was a lawyer, politician, preacher, playwright, actor, lecturer and novelist achieving national recognition. He is remembered here for preparing sermons at “BayPlace” and then boarding the train at Cape Charles and delivering the sermons in New York City and then returning by train to Cape Charles on Monday.
YOU AND "BayPlace:" Now over a century and a quarter later, you can vacation at historic “BayPlace” and revel in its rich history and enjoy its well-appointed surroundings, new furnishings and fully equipped kitchen. This large, grand home with a wrap-around porch can accommodate many families who can enjoy both privacy and common gathering places as well as the home’s large yard, which is ideal for enjoying its fire pit, having BBQs and playing games. “BayPlace” is popular for reunions and gatherings of all kinds as well as for vacationing.
AMENITIES AT CAPE CHARLES: Most of the guests of “BayPlace” enjoy renting a street-legal golf cart and touring little old Cape Charles and seeing its wide variety of historic style homes with gingerbread adornment as well as the Sears Roebuck mail order houses from the 1920s. Cape Charles' many bistros, include “The Shanty Crab Shack” and “The Oyster Farm Seafood Eatery,” both right on the Bay. Cape Charles offers a wide selection of specialty shops. The broad, sandy Cape Charles beach and its adjacent Fun Pier where you can fish and crab or just enjoy sunsets over the water, are never crowded. And if you golf, the Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus Bay front golf courses at Bay Creek Resort in Cape Charles are considered among the top ten golf courses in the nation. Railroad and History buffs will enjoy visiting the Cape Charles Museum and Welcome Center on Stone Road.
EASY DAY-TRIPS FROM "BayPlace:" Many “Bay Place” guests also take advantage of the many available, nearby, easy day-trips. Only about an hour drive to the north is Chincoteague and the Assateague National Seashore Park with its wild ponies and other wildlife as well as Atlantic Ocean beaches. And to the south, about an hour drive away, is Virginia Beach with all its many attractions along the Oceanfront, and, about two hour’s drive away, you can visit Busch Gardens and Virginia’s Historic Triangle of Williamsburg-Jamestown -Yorktown.

The property manager has always had excellent communication and is also superb.
We had a wonderful vacation in Cape Charles with our extended family to celebrate my father's 70th birthday. We really appreciated the many thoughtful touches to support parents of small children from the pack-and-play to the provided highchairs. Additionally, we appreciated the way the driveway wraps around to connect to the street perpendicular to the house which made it easier for a large 12 passenger van to pull through instead of needing to back up. We had a great stay and would highly recommend this house to other large family groups.
Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We had a great week at Bay Place with our children and grandchildren. The house is roomy, comfortable and well equipped for large groups. We loved the front porch for coffee in the morning and wine in the evening. Adding a door to the outside shower would be very helpful. We bought a curtain and put it up ourselves.
This home was perfect for us!
Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This is a lovely home, with a lot of fun character as well. Plenty of space for a large group to gather, and several seating areas so that people can have space to themselves as well. The manager was very responsive to questions. The location was great - Cape Charles is a very small town, so it was easy to walk to the beach, library, park, and restaurants. We had a wonderful stay, except for one big issue. While this home has wifi, it's super slow. We were getting .5mbps, enough to do web browsing and email, but not enough for my wife to log into her work's remote server, or for me to do video conferencing. She ended up spending significant time at the Cape Charles Brewery and the library, both of which have good internet. If the owner can upgrade the internet speed, this is an exceptional home.
We had a large group for the weekend. The house was all we could ask for
This has been our FAVORITE home that we have vacationed in! As each family arrived, they explored this beautiful home to pick out their bedroom. From the wee ones to my 86-year-old parents, everyone was so excited to be all together in this Grand Home. The bedrooms all had fabulous beds and linens. So thankful all linens and towels were supplied! The living spaces are so comfortable and spacious but cozy, we truly felt at home. We cooked the entire time there; kitchen is completely stocked with all you need! Their cleaning crew is amazing! The house was spotless! Communication was fabulous! We all felt blessed to have stayed in this family home. We only wish we didn't have to head back to work, we would have LOVED to have stayed longer! JOY for your day!
This house is truly amazing. We had a large group ranging in age from infant up to 95 years old! Pretty much anything you would need this house has. A very well stocked kitchen with whatever you would possibly need to prepare a feast for the gang or a simple microwave meal. Even supply’s for the littles. From highchairs to pack and plays and even an adorable round crib in one of the rooms. The double bunk room was adorable with its little reading nook. This house is family friendly The porch was simply the best. Plenty of space and plenty of seating to enjoy a nice afternoon. Things to realize about this house. A lot of steps. The main staircase is not so bad but if you’re going to the rooms on the 3rd floor know they are STEEP! As well as the secondary stairway from the kitchen area. Tried to bring down what was needed for the day so we didn’t have to climb the mountain more times than necessary. Once you reached the summit it was a quiet escape from the activity below! Perfect for sleeping! At the time of our stay the only working bath tub was on the 3rd floor. Not ideal for the littles that needed bathing. The bathrooms theirselves were really nice. The house as a whole had plenty of gathering areas that it never felt crowded. As far as the WiFi I felt like my phone preformed better without. My cellular service worked fine. All in all our stay was perfect!
Pictures don’t do this place justice, absolutely stunning, comfortable and fun!!! We will be coming back for sure!!!
