Lewisburg, West Virginia
"Holt House" was built in 1834 and is named for long term resident Judge Holt, whose grandson, born in the house, was a WVA governor. Holt House has been maintained and updated in the best of quality throughout the years, yet retains its historic feel and charm. Just 3 blocks from "downtown" Lewisburg and 7 miles from the Greenbrier, the area is steeped in natural beauty and history. Lewisburg offers a local Irish pub, a fantastic pizza restaurant, unique taco spot (high praise coming from a Texan!), several gourmet eating establishments and fun shopping. Less charming but also very convenient, the area is also serviced by a Krogers, Lowes, and Walmart.
Five large bedrooms, 3 full baths, 3 half baths, an eat-in kitchen, bright sun-room, formal living room and dining rooms, and two offices provide plenty of space for a large group or family to enjoy each other's company and yet retain some privacy. There are beds for 10 adults. Five working fireplaces, two staircases, casement windows, and updated 1920's style bathrooms provide character and comfort. The house has been updated to include wireless internet, two flatscreen TVs with cable, and air conditioning in the entire second floor and kitchen. An outdoor patio for casual dining sits on a fenced acre in the heart of town. A washer dryer is in the basement, as is the new natural gas furnace that heats the house through the radiator system in winter months.
The front door, accessed by a gravel half-moon driveway, enters a lovely, large reception foyer opening onto the living room to the right, with dual couches and a fireplace. A connected elegant dining room has a fireplace, and seats 10-12. The butler's pantry sits between the dining room and the eat-in kitchen, and doubles as a bar area. The updated kitchen includes a food prep galley connected to a casual eating area with a fireplace, seating 8. The kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher, electric stove/oven, microwave, Keurig, stainless refrigerator, storage area, and is cooled by an air conditioning unit in the summer.
A large private bedroom (the "Botanical Room") has a king bed, full bath, and cedar closet, and sits off the hall connecting the front and back stairs. Tucked off the entry is the lovely, tiled sun-room with a comfortable seating, a fireplace and TV: a perfect place for morning coffee and newspapers.
Upstairs, four bedrooms and two offices are connected by a large middle gallery. The master bedroom (king bed) has a fireplace, two cedar closets, and a full bath (featuring a shower/tub tiled in lilac and mint tile). A short step takes you through to a connecting office, that could be used as a nursery or play area for children. The office has the second TV and a printer. The front bedroom (the "Bird Room") has a queen bed with a quilted carved backboard, a cedar closet and a connected half bath (toilet and sink). An interior bedroom (the "Horse Room") has a queen bed, cedar closet, and large full bath (featuring a shower/tub tiled in yellow/black color). A last upstairs bedroom (the "Dog Room") has a king bed and cedar closet; it is serviced by a hall half bath (toilet and sink) in the hall. A sleeping porch on the back of the house has been converted into a second office with views across the backyard.
The house is comfortable and easy to live in. However, it sits on a busy corner. The traffic does not bother us; the walls are thick and we are well off the street. But there is noise (except at night when traffic is sparse) and the front yard is not enclosed. Another disclosure: the backyard is large and private (fenced), but the landscaping has not been maintained for many years. It remains lovely; a mossy patio just off the kitchen, makes a fantastic place to eat summer meals and watch the bird-feeder.
There is much to do in this area, both indoors and out. Hiking/biking (the 70 miles Greenbrier River Trail is 3 miles away); fly-fishing the many local streams and rivers; finding hidden swimming holes, driving through rural hills (just minutes out the door); kayaking; tubing; white-water rafting; snow skiing (Snowshoe is 1.5 hours away); antiquing; and of course, and checking out the historic Greenbrier Resort. In addition, there are many civil war sites in the area, including several markers just outside our fenced yard commemorating the Battle of Lewisburg.

This home got PERFECT for our stay. Such a fun home with lots of evident history. Highly recommend staying here. Beds were super comfortable! Love the outdoor space
We (87 year old father, adult children and partners, and three adult granddaughters) have stayed at countless VRBO and other vacation rental homes—large and small—over the years, and the Holt House is by far the loveliest and most gracious of them all. The house is beautifully decorated and supremely comfortable. There are working fireplaces in four rooms, and during the cold spell over the Christmas holiday (temperatures below 10 degrees), we used them all. Patrick, the owner, kindly provided kindling and a cord of dry wood for our week at the house. We started each morning with a fire in the massive kitchen fireplace and gathered around the big breakfast table for a meal. We had dinners in the lovely dining room, and then retired either to the living room with its large fireplace and two ample sofas for Scrabble and other games or to the study and a fireplace there for a movie. The beds are wonderful with excellent linens and quilts and comforters. There is a huge back yard behind the house and a large patio strung with lights (perfect for a croquet game and cocktails, I would think), but it was far too cold for us to enjoy this area during our visit. We spent our days walking on the Greenbrier Trail along the ice-choked river, wandering around the Greenbrier Resort, and browsing the wonderful shops in downtown Lewisburg before stopping for drinks at the General Lewis Hotel on the short walk home. Both Patrick and Carlena, the property manager, were immediately available to answer questions and could not have been more welcoming. Our stay at The Holt House was just truly splendid!
Holt House was the perfect setting for our family to gather to celebrate our son’s graduation from WVSOM last weekend! The home is welcoming, comfortable, clean and large enough to accommodate our big family. The patio and outdoor area is wonderful and was enjoyed by all. The location is perfect in respect to downtown and the school. We’re so happy that we were able to rent this property for graduation! Patrick was very accommodating to us and easy to communicate with. He is a super host and we would definitely recommend Holt House to others.
Had a wonderful time! Large spacious home with all the amenities. Hope to return one day.
Very nice home with lots of room for our family. We had everything we needed to enjoy our mini vacation.
Wonderful stay…. With our daughters wedding and people traveling from 26 states was so nice to have a place for family and friends stop by and enjoy this comfortable home with us. West Virginia is so beautiful and Greenbrier county is full of amazing history. Grateful for the Shea’s sharing their Happy Place.
A group of 10 family and friends had a wonderful time staying in this historic Holt Home. It was nicely appointed with updated kitchen and lovely new outside covered porch area with new outdoor table/chairs. Bedrooms large with comfortable beds and nice linens. Plenty of room in this historic house with multiple other rooms to enjoy during the stay. Within walking distance to Lewisburg which is a quaint town with many great restaurants and shopping. Enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the French Goat and Thunderbird Tacos along with lunch at Del Sol Mexican Restaurant. Enjoyed a day exploring the New River Gorge area with bridge walking tour, boat ride up to view the New River Bridge and a visit to an old mining/railroad town of Thurmond. Spent a day at Greenbrier Resort taking the informative historic walking tour and the bunker tour. Beautiful resort but so glad we decided to rent this house and stay in Lewisburg. It offers much larger accommodations for a much better price. The owner, Patrick, was easy to communicate with via email, text or phone conversations. He offered good advice on restaurants and activities. He checked in with us to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Highly, highly recommend renting this lovely mansion.
When researching properties for my son's graduation, I needed a large property and was hoping for close proximity to downtown Lewisburg. The Holt House absolutely delivered. It is charaming older home and we loved it. The owner Patrick was a pleasure to work with on this rental. Would absolutely recommend at stay at this home!
Lewisburg is such a special place with access to so many fun things to do. This house is in a prime location and has had several spaces renovated - great kitchen and back patio. The house is great for groups - plenty of space, clean and the owner is very responsive.
We initially booked this large home so that all of our family could stay together while attending a wedding at the Greenbrier. Unfortunately, not all of our family could attend due to unforeseen circumstances. I am so glad we kept the reservation in spite of the smaller number gathering because this home is an absolute gem. Lots of rooms to spread out in, incredible kitchen, very comfy beds, and an outdoor space that is beautiful and relaxing. We intend to come back again when everyone can be together. This home is perfect for a large family gathering and is a convenient five minute walk to Lewisburg restaurants and shops. Would be a wonderful fall destination for leaf-peeping as well as a Christmas visit to see Lewisburg and the Greenbrier decorated for the holidays.
