Siltcoos Lake:

The largest lake on the central Oregon coast is also one of the region’s best fishing lakes, especially for warm water fish including largemouth bass.

It also is one of the few lakes in Oregon where you can keep a wild coho salmon in season.

Siltcoos Lake is a sprawling 3,164 acres located between Florence and Reedsport in the wonderful dune country of the central coastline.

Siltcoos is one of the most celebrated largemouth bass fisheries in Oregon and is among those mentioned in our article, Best Largemouth Bass Fishing in Western Oregon.

You’ll find tons of good bass cover all over the lake here, including fallen trees, drop-offs, points, islands and numerous coves and several longer creek arms. There also are some docks, especially where there are a fair number of private homes along the banks on the west and north sides of the lake, many clustered around the communities of Dunes City and North Beach.

Bass will often move up into the shallower water during the spring, when they spawn just off shore, and they can be aggressive then. They will stage a bit more off shore at other times.

Crappie also like to hang out around structure and may be found in shallower water during the spring. Sunken trees and pilings are good places to start.

Also, the lake is known to have good populations of less-pursued species including yellow perch, sunfish and bullhead catfish.

Trout are not the primary quarry for anglers here, but the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife does stock a modest number of rainbow trout here. Look for those plantings to take place in late winter or early spring (March and April are good times to check the stocking schedule linked below).

Native cutthroat trout also live in the lake and its tributary streams and may be kept as part of your daily trout limit.

The coho salmon fishery here opens in October and runs through December. Fishing for these fish is usually not productive until significant rainfall draws in these large fish, which most often happens in November.

There are a modest number of coho caught and kept here, but it’s a fairly unique opportunity. Boaters catch most of the adult coho, often by trolling wobbling lures in the creek channels the salmon use to return to their home streams.

What’s nearby:

This home is a quick drive from multiple access points to the Oregon Dunes and ocean
beaches including the popular access just out South Jetty Road, and the city of Florence is five miles north. The charming Old Town section of the city
is filled with lovely shops, cafes, galleries, and restaurants.
You will also be minutes from numerous trailheads for hiking or mountain biking. The
coastal forests flourishing in Douglas fir and Sitka spruce extend nearly to the Ocean.

Some trails wind up, over, and through sand dunes, offering hikers the opportunity to
experience the unique natural wonders of this area. Bring your camera!
Paddle Siltcoos River between Siltcoos Lake and the Pacific Ocean. This slow-moving,
three-mile river is so ideal for paddlers that it’s a designated Canoe Trail.
Take a scenic drive up Hwy 101 to Heceta Head Lighthouse where free tours are
offered daily.
Get your adrenalin flowing on a nearby dune buggy tour or with an ATV rental, or go crabbing from the Siuslaw Bay public fishing pier at the end of South Jetty road
where crabbing is excellent from late spring until the fresh water from winter rains force
the crabs out to the ocean.

This was a nice enough place but not quite as advertised. The downstairs living area is just another entire space that is completely separate from the upstairs living space making it difficult for the family to get together. Also, while there is a partial lake view, I was not able to identify any access to the lake which was disappointing.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Deerhart Lakehouse. It is centrally located in Florance. The property had a fabulous view and was central to visiting the lighthouses on the Oregen Coast. The property driveway was a bit steep. The people at the management company were very helpful.

Very cute house nice peaceful location I am a vacation rental cleaner I own my own cleaning company in central Oregon I think the house needs a little more attention to detail in cleaning floors had stuff all over them when we arrived crumbs in the drawers no organization in the kitchen and blankets etc were just thrown in the closet not nearly folded hand prints on sliding glass doors I believe little things make a big difference in cleaning overall lovely home

Great views and access to the beach and activities. The water pressure was pretty terrible though, and at one point no water came out of the sink which was pretty frustrating considering how much it was to stay here. Also very sandwiched in to the neighbors house which was not clear in the photos.

Very nice setting overlooking the lake. plenty of supplies/dishes/cookware to prepare meals. Downside was the extremely low water pressure. Parking, entry and exit were difficult.

Really liked the 2 living quarters. The house was clean and plenty of stuff for a long stay. Water pressure was really low. Took longer to bath and when someone downstairs was using water it barely flowed upstairs. Nice rooms and beds. Would stay here again.

This is a great place to stay. House was very nice and comfortable, might have had been better if the front yard was clean ( weed’s). My small 8 1/2 pound dog slid down to a hole area in front of the home and I had to get her out myself as she is got weed needles all over her and stung by them and didn’t want to move no more to get out. We did have a small atv trailer and getting to property is in a small hill and no turning point in it. Glad we had other 2 homes rented in the same area and there was space in in the other 2 homes. Upstairs has 2 rooms awesome rooms, living room would have had been better with a sofa bed as I had 3 couples in my group and no extra room upstairs. Downstairs was great for the single guys in our group :)

We loved the deck! Amazing views and cool breezes off the deck sliding glass doors. PLUS! Fans in every room! The rooms were all clean and well appointed. Couch and rocking chairs were so comofrtable! We loved spending time together upstairs and then separating and having our own space in the late evening. The driveway is steep but we had no problems with 2 cars- 1 in the garage and 1 in front. Kitchen, laundry and bathrooms were new and easy to clean. Fireplace downstairs with the bunkbeds was family friendly and cozy! The only complaint, which may not be valid so far in nature, but there were alot of spiderwebs, all around the railing of deck and the awning. However, I cleaned it all up with a broom and we only saw 1 spider in 4 days. Otherwise, the house was spotless, lots of towels and very well stocked with everything we needed. We wish there was a firepit. There was one in the photos but that belonged to the neighbor. Icemaker upstairs did not work. Make sure you get check-in instructions in advance as cell service may not work. The neighbor was kind and called the owners for us and we were finally able to get in. 1 key for all guests to share.
