East Hampton, Connecticut
Escape to this stunning, recently restored, 5 bedroom retreat in a historic village only two hours away from NYC and Boston. Built in 1780, the Johnson House is a beautiful, antique, character home with all of the luxuries and amenities of modern day living. Guests can enjoy the heated, salt-water swimming pool, outdoor picnic area alongside the sprawling brook and waterfall, Weber gas grill, and a separate outdoor deck and seating area in the charming garden, which makes you feel as though transported to the English countryside.
Each of the five bedrooms has a Tuft & Needle mattress and bathrobes, and the bathrooms a luxury freestanding bathtub. There are three window AC units in the house and each bedroom has a powerful tower fan. The country's kitchen is fully equipped with Lacanche gas stove, professional espresso machine, extensive baking equipment and Staub and Mauviel cookware. Help yourself to fresh herbs from the deck. There are also two working fireplaces; great for that evening cocktail hour. And if you must work, the large office with desktop monitor offers a relaxing view of the stunning waterfall.
Bikes and kayaks are available for our more active guests and we highly encourage a short walk (just 5 minutes!) to the Connecticut river for kayaking or to simply enjoy the sunset. Also at guests’ disposal are a trampoline, Concept II rowing and Nordic Track elliptical machines, Equinox SoulCycls spin bike, board games, puzzles and an extensive library. Sonos sound system is available throughout the house.
There is a separate laundry room with state of the art washer and dryer for your convenience
If you want to take in the local area, just 5 minutes’ drive away is the Hurd State Park, which is great for hiking, or you can head up to the Airline Trail for a scenic bike ride. Enjoy the excellent restaurants of South Glastonbury and Middletown within a 10 to 15 minute drive, or visit some of the area's fantastic antique shops.
Even though this is a country retreat, Whole Foods can deliver within 2 hours of placing your order; there is also a Stop and Shop, wine and liquor store, cozy local tavern and a pizzeria all within 7 minutes’ drive from the property.
Three friends and I stayed here for out 20th year college reunion near by and had a wonderful time! The house is charming and the backyard was expansive and it was so peaceful listening to the waterfall and the creek. The pool was the perfect temperature. Everything was clean and as described. There are no showers but we just embraced the old timeyness of the house and enjoyed the two bathtubs! Would definitely recommend this listing. Thanks again for a great time!
We had a family reunion in the area and chose East Hampton as a half way point. The place was clean, warm and inviting. Stocked with everything we could have possibly needed. Waterfall, creek and pool were so fun to play in. Are family had a great week together.
The house is beautiful and so peaceful. The owners are super nice and helpful too. It was very hot when we arrived but the house had no AC. The owners kindly arranged for 3 window units to be installed at our request. I also liked the fitness equipment. Pros are: lovely pool, pretty waterfall, beautiful interior, close to nature. Cons are: no TV, no microwave, old style kitchen with fridge in basement is not ideal for lots of cooking, there is nothing within walking distance (eg. Cafes, etc.), no central AC.
The heated pool was a big hit. Our kids loved building boats and racing them in the brook. Very relaxing to listen to the waterfall. So many fireflies at night! The owners answered all our questions quickly and are very welcoming. We plan to stay here again when we are in the area.
