Built in 1944, the Hobbit house is one of the first sustainable homes in California ... designed and built by green architect Carr Jones. All of the building materials were reused and recycled: all bricks are reminiscence from the 1908 earthquake in San Francisco, the wood was repurposed from old ships, and the metalwork is the product of old anchor chains.

The home is comfortably appointed with Jones’ trademark brickwork, unique roofing, radiant heated floors, and rusticated lumber. A truly spectacular example of amazing craftsmanship and creative design sensibilities.

The house is uniquely divided into two spaces, separated by a charming courtyard and pool. In the main house {2 story}, you will find the master loft bedroom, kitchen, with an open area downstairs. The second one-story building (1100. sq ft) has two bedrooms, a sitting area, with 2 fireplaces. and 1.5 bathrooms.

Fun place to stay. Unique. Interesting architecture and house history, but also comfortable and well maintained. Great neighborhood for walks and nearby food.

We enjoyed our Christmas stay with family. Adult kids loved the pool table. We had to use the coffee table for dining b/c it was cold, windy and rainy outside where the only dining table was. The bedrooms were comfortable, the shower had good water pressure and there was a good supply of toiletries.

What a treat to stay at a part of California’s architectural history! This house is unusual and very nicely kept up. Clearly significant old houses are a labor of love for these hosts. Family was visiting us (we live nearby in a house too small to host) from Canada over what turned out to be a very soggy holiday week. But this house with its radiant heat floors and working gas fireplace is warm and comfortable. We loved that it was decorated for the holidays -even a tree! The pool is not heated but works great as a cold dip with the steam room so the brave guest should definitely pack a suit even in winter. This will be my go-to “extra home” for guests going forward.

We made a full on steak dinner for my mother’s 95 birthday celebration. The kitchen was well equipped for this event. My only sadness is the lack of a dining room table. If the weather had been good, we’d have eaten outside. Loved the radiant heat floors! Loved the fireplace! Loved the neighborhood!

We had stayed there before and obviously liked it very much since we returned. Separate living areas were perfect for our family gathering. It is a unique property; very charming.

We had a lovely stay. Booked for the weekend of the Urban Cow Half Marathon. Convenient walking distance from the race start. Incredible to be able to walk home and take a dip in the pool and use the steam room. Coffee at Chocolate Fish, Marie's Donuts, and the newly opened Stepdad's all a few steps away. The home itself was very thoughtfully appointed and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again!

The house is very charming. It is as it appears on the website. The wood and vintage touches were very artful and enjoyable. The main house was easy and comfortable. The pool is very nice and easy for all to use. The back two rooms were very nice, well appointed and very comfortable. This a an architecturally special home and we loved it. The hosts were very easy and home instructions perfect.A great walking neighborhood and the access to Land Park and the downtown area is perfect. We hope to stay here again.

Quiet! Unique property located near good neighborhood restaurants. Much larger than it looks from the outside. Somewhat like having two homes on one property with back bedrooms separated from main house unit.

From check in to check out the entire process was amazing. The host was extremely responsive and thoughtful even going so far to leave some celebratory sparkling cider. The home is charming, comfortable and well appointed even though it is an older, historic home. We created memories to last a lifetime
