Custer, South Dakota
This 6 bedroom, 3000 square foot home is a completely remodeled ranch style house with new paint, flooring, bedding and amenities. Central Air conditioning added in 2021.
We are located 1.5 miles from the edge of Custer State Park. My husband and I have a house nearby and another rental called The Little Red Inn, along with Grandpa’s Place down Rocky Road. The Little Red Inn is 1.5 miles from this Brown House and Grandpa’s House is about 2.5 miles.
We bought The Brown House and renovated it in 2020. We placed stone along the bottom and we completely repainted it inside and out in 2020. We removed a carport and put in a large firepit and outdoor area with pea gravel that flows into a garage converted into a gathering area. The yard is enclosed so young children can run. There is an upstairs sitting area with a large tv and a downstairs area as well so the kids can have a space. Both spaces have 70 inch TVs. Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms and downstairs there are 2 more. Bathrooms are on each level. You are 1 mile from the back entrance to Custer State Park. This takes you to Needles Hwy ( about 4 miles away).
The house has a little room with books, toys and a canvas mushroom play space for youngsters and there is a shuffleboard for adults and tweens.
The outdoor Firepit area is a favourite.
We are next to the best hiking, biking, motorcycle riding in the nation.
We are also close to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse and centrally located to Keystone, Hill City and Hot Springs. We are about 5 miles from Custer, 2 miles on gravel.
We believe in supporting the community and want to invest in the future of Custer. I’m a local physician and I work at the hospital and clinic. We have all new furnishings and wonderful views. Hiking and biking is right out the front door. Views of the meadow include a moonrise and elk grazing, along with horses roaming and running. Morning coffee on the large deck is glorious with a calming view and we have a garage for gatherings that walks out into a large firepit and gathering area. We have created what we would want when we travel with our family. We take pride that we manage our own property and live in the area.
We have internet but not fiberoptic. It works great but could be slow if multiple users and two TVs are streaming.
Custer has incredible dining. Best burgers around at Burger and Bun and Bakers Bakery. Get reservations for upscale fine dining at Skogen Kitchen. Enjoy breakfast at Bakers Bakery and upscale Hjem am (reservations encouraged). Have dinner on the patio and relax with a beer at The Custer Wolf. Enjoy the locals at Our Place. Experience a brewery experience at Pounding Fathers and a sports bar atmosphere at The Buglin Bull. Sage Creek Grille is fantastic and may have a line in the summer. Incredible food.
Cook at home with a Ninja blender, Ninja Grill, Airfryer and Pressure Cooker. I have stocked this home like I cook in my own home.
A Ninja hot and cold coffee maker is available for your pleasure.
There is a large roaster pan and lots of sauce pans and cooking bowls and utensils. Service for 12 with bowls, plates and glasses. Blackstone Grill outside.
Nightlife and live music at The Beacon.
Tons of outdoor biking and hiking activities. Hot Air balloon rides with Black Hills Balloons. Bikes and climbing, kayak equipment at South Dakota Outdoor Sports.
You could spend days in the surrounding area going from place to place ... or you could relax and do nothing.
This property had lots of room for our family and so many amenities. We enjoyed the evenings outdoors by the fire pit. We watched the wildlife and beautiful nighttime sky. Short drive to Custer and Hill City. Overall a beautiful home.
We loved everything about our vacation in SD!
My husband and I brought our 4 children, 3 spouses and 2grandsons to SD. House was perfect for our large group. Beds were great, plenty of towels and temperature was very comfortable. Opened the windows at night and it was cool, closed them in the morning and the house stayed cool. Joy and Matt were helpful and neighbor saved our fire pit night with dry wood after it rained much of one day. I would easily recommend this house as it was convenient to downtown Custer, the state park and Mt Rushmore. And if you want to see the Buffalo , go later in the afternoon or dusk. The kids saw none when they went early morning, but HERDS later in the day?
We couldn’t have been more pleased with the house or the location! It never felt crowded with the 12 of us. Would highly recommend!!
This property worked really well for our multifamily group of 10. We had lots of space to spread out and the views of the lake and wildlife were great. It was especially nice when the horses were hanging out in the pasture across the road. The location was great, right by Custer State Park.
Very cute cozy place to stay! They have Almost anything you need for the kitchen! Loved having access to 2 washer and dryer sets for clothes, because with kids things happen and it helped lessen the amount of dirty laundry we brought home. Ladies, we all know what the laundry situation is when we get back from vacation! Loved the location with it being so close to Custer state park. We saw wildlife in the mornings and evenings, the fire pit area is great for campfires! Would stay here again. Joy was absolutely wonderful to work with!!
The overall experience with the property itself was very good. The location is not ideal for motorcycles because you have to drive on a dirt/stone road to get to the property and the parking is not the best. The only complaint with the house is the steps leading to the basement. They are shorter than normal and have a very steep incline. The location itself is beautiful, set back in a valley overlooking a field. Wildlife (deer, turkey, elk, geese and horses) all around you. In the evening you could hear the coyotes talking back and forth. I would rent this place again, however, I would not do it for Sturgis Bike week. The owners were very responsive (answered in minutes) when we needed something.
We loved sitting outside around watching the horses and listening to the elk.
We stayed at the Little Brown House while on a family vacation. We had 5 kids, 4 and under, and 8 adults. We had plenty of room to spread out and enjoy each other. We loved that the house was stocked with all the essentials as if it was our own! Plus the outdoor space was beautiful! We were even greeted a few times by the horses nearby! Definitely recommend this space for large groups.
We had a great time and enjoyed the stay. The beds were so comfortable and we enjoyed the wildlife and quiet atmosphere!
It was a great stay for our family.
The famiy had so much fun using the outside area with all the seating, fire pit and view. The most amazing sight was the horses that run up to the fence and greeted the kids. The home is very clean and spacious. We had a fantastic stay.
