Harbor Island, South Carolina
Welcome to Pelican Perch, a tranquil, beachfront retreat on private Harbor Island. Your beautifully renovated, spacious duplex is located on the quiet Pelican Point cul-de-sac. Enjoy the sunrise with your morning coffee on one of the three back decks, each with unobstructed views of the ocean and dunes. Sit out front for a view of the tidal marsh and flocks of migrating birds searching for their own breakfast.
High-speed wifi lets you work remotely, and stream videos on the large LCD flatscreen TV in the living room. The two first floor master bedrooms each have their own bath and tv. Two more bedrooms and another full bath upstairs create comfortable sleeping space for nine guests. Pelican Perch is beautifully decorated. All rooms have sweeping views of the ocean or the tidal marsh. Our fully-equipped kitchen (We love to cook!) has all the appliances you may want, including a Keurig coffee maker. There’s also a gas grill on the private back deck (please note: propane refills are responsibility and at the cost of the guest), and a large umbrella-shaded table for family meals outside.
Harbor Island is private, accessible only to residents and guests, so it’s never busy, even in the summer or on holidays. Our beach is quiet and protected, with very calm waters, the perfect place for children to swim safely, and for adults to enjoy a peaceful float. When the tide goes out, the tidal pools are full of unexpected treasures: fish, shrimp, small crabs and shells abound! We have beach umbrellas, chairs, sand toys, fishing poles and cast nets to help you make the most of our beach.
Walk along one of the boardwalks through the dunes to the beach, or take the golf cart to any beach entrance. Enjoy the short cart ride to the Harbor Island Beach & Racquet Club, with an Olympic-sized pool overlooking the Harbor River, a kiddie wading pool, sand volleyball court, hard surface tennis courts, and fitness center. There’s a basketball court and a golf practice area by the Club. A short drive will take you to docks for fishing and crabbing. The Mainline Market at the entrance to Harbor Island sells everything you could want for fishing as well as fresh-caught seafood and other sundries.
Use the golf cart to explore the island. Visit the rookeries that house thousands of egrets, herons, and their fledglings. Walk the beach and sandbar, where you’ll find a rotating cast of bird species throughout the seasons. Harbor Island is an important resting place for egrets, herons, ospreys, pelicans, gulls and skimmers, as well as threatened species such as Wilson’s Plover and the Redbird. You’ll find a pamphlet in the house to help identify them.
Guests have rights to a season pass to adjoining Hunting Island State Park. Hunting Island has miles of unspoiled beaches, where you might be the only person to make footprints in the sand that day. Visit the “Boneyard,” a beach of uniquely-haunting and ever-changing splendor. Explore miles of well-marked hiking trails and boardwalks through natural forests and marshland. Visit the Nature Center, where staff will gladly teach you more about the land and life. May through October you can see Loggerhead sea turtle nests on both Harbor and Hunting Islands, carefully guarded by our Island Turtle Program volunteers. With luck, you may even see hatchlings make their way across the sand to their new lives in the sea.
If you feel like venturing off the island, look for the beautiful, hand-woven baskets for sale along the roadside, crafted by local Gullah residents. These sea islands are part of the Gullah Geechee corridor. St. Helena offers many historic places to visit such as the Penn Center, one of the first schools for the children of freed slaves, and where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. drafted his famous “I have a dream” speech. Stroll through nearby historic Beaufort, a lovely antebellum town, with its beautiful mansions and more than 50 historic buildings. The entire downtown has been designated an historic district, as it is one of the few Southern towns that survived the Civil War. Its tree-lined streets with hanging moss are full of quaint shops, restaurants, and coffee houses. On the way home Frogmore is a wonderful stop with its colorful shops, art galleries, and restaurants where you can enjoy authentic local food.
Relax on the screened-in porch in the evening. Feel the fresh ocean breezes as the sun and sky shift colors in a show that never fails to dazzle. Watch squadrons of Pelicans dive from the sky to the sea for their evening meal. See them skim the surface of the water, silhouetted against the fading evening light, on their way to their sandbar roost for the night, their wingtips barely clearing the sea as they show-off their low altitude mastery.
Pelican Perch is a place of true tranquility and repose. It is our happy place, and we hope it’s yours too!

This house was perfect for our family getaway!
We celebrated my sons graduation from the Marines, my daughters 35 birthday and a hood bye to my daughter and granddaughter before they leave for California where her husband is stationed in the Coast Guards. The house was perfect for our family, many of meals were prepared with a full stocked kitchen, nice having the washer and dryer to keep up with the laundry from beach and pool days. Golf cart was a wonderful bonus for the back and forth to the beach and pool. We will come back in the vey near future as a family. We love the resort and the sunrise on the back porch while having our coffee. Enjoyed two meals at Johnson Creek tavern. Conveniently located and food was great.
Property was ideal for our family of seven. Peaceful, private, had everything we needed.
Beautiful home. Fantastic views. Would stay at this property again. Great reunion with family over Thanksgiving.
Perfect place for good friends to unwind and celebrate an amazing 50 years of friendship! Relaxing, beautiful location. Home is situated with amazing sunrise and sunset views.
We enjoyed our stay. The area was peaceful and the sunsets and sunrises were beautiful. The house was beautifully, clean and provided everything that we needed.
Great views over the dunes to the ocean and bay and marsh. Lush grounds immaculately maintained. House well equipped for cooking. Lacking beach chairs and beach towels. Tennis courts in good condition.
This was a beautiful property in an amazing location. We came to watch our son graduate and take him home. We were only there to sleep for the most part. Will defiantly be coming back for vacation.
Not easily accessible for handicapped. But I knew that and had help. I managed to make it up and down the stairs with difficulty and standby assistance. But I could not take a shower as the bathtubs were all too high for me to step into and I don’t remember seeing any grab bars. The microwave and upper cabinets were all too high for me to reach. But again, I had plenty of family around to help. It was wonderful to be able to see both of sunrise and sunset. Our last night there a storm blew in with the wind howling and the rain splattering it was a little bit intimidating, but we felt in no danger of the house being blown down. It was definitely sturdy and stable.
We really like our stay. To get the most out of the beach, check tide schedules. You want to be on the beach at high tide.
This place was magical! The home was beautiful, spacious, and super clean! We loved our stay!
Harbor Island is a beautiful, quiet beach location. The surf is really calm and the wildlife is amazing! We absolutely loved the view of the marsh from the front porch and the view of the dunes and beach from the back porch. The updated decor downstairs was nicely done. If you prefer larger waves for swimming or body surfing, you can use the Hunting Island pass to go to the beach there. Our only concern was the summer cleaning crew needed to do a more thorough cleaning between stays. I am sure the property management crew can take care of this issue as they were very responsive to any questions or concerns we had. Overall, it was a wonderful week in Harbor Island.
Our whole family enjoyed our stay at this property. The home was comfortable and nicely furnished. The kitchen provided all of the tools needed to make most of our meals at home, including basic spices. We loved the private feeling of the shallow beaches for our toddler, while still having a convenient drive to town or beaches with bigger waves for our teenager. We would highly recommend this property to others!
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us! Our group loved the idyllic location, the views were stunning from the house, and appreciated the golf cart as it was very helpful in getting around to the neighborhood beaches and to view the beautiful birds at sunset! We all agreed the interior of the house is even prettier in person! It’s very nicely decorated and updated. The proximity to Hunting State Park was fabulous at just a mile and a half; an exquisite beach and walking trails. Everything at the house was really lovely! The only thing we could have used in the house is washing machine detergent. and maybe a couple of trash bags. As we came from Massachusetts, we were unable to bring staples such as that. Thank you again!
Comforters, bed sheets, blankets, absolutely covered in stains, filthy baseboards and corners. At first glance things seemed to be in good order, but after the first night and we made our beds the next day, stains were discovered all over the comforters, corners of the sheets, and every extra blanket in the whole condo. We pulled out what should have been fresh sheets from the closet and found them stained also. In the closet was a trash bag full of yellow stained towels- we found concerning brown stains in the tucked portion of a box spring cover. The property manager never apologized and had zero urgency on getting these out and laundered, and only eventually got around to bringing clean blankets and a couple of quilts for the master bedroom covers over 24 hours after I called. Absolutely humiliated to have my brother and his new wife join us for our first vacation together and they find their bedding covered in what looks like yellow pet stains, even though this property claims no pets allowed. No effort was made to offer any concession- texts with the property manager were short and rude considering the dozens of photos I sent of the many, many stains we found after we started looking. The property manager, nor the owner felt them need to respond when we all decided to leave a day early and shared in detail how disappointed and disgusted we were. We will be reporting this property to VRBO right away and definitely DO NOT recommend.
