Medanales, New Mexico
Perfectly designed by a local architect, south of Abiquiu this large, airy pueblo style home is filled with desert light, and beautiful vistas from its many windows. Using southwestern elements and handcrafted furnishings the high ceilinged living room has a kiva fireplace, cozy down filled white sofas in an open floor plan with a dining area that seats 10. The gourmet kitchen boasts a Viking Range, Asko DW, concrete counters, and a complete pantry. A few steps up from the living room by mesquite stairs is a quiet den complete with TV and a day bed that sleeps 2.
Two ample bedrooms (king and queen beds) have tiled ensuite baths. A large eastern portale facing the mountains is complete with outdoor fireplace. The house sits snugly on 30 + acres and borders the State Land with trails down to the Chama River.
There is a separate bathhouse with sauna and serene resting room. Wonderfully landscaped with desert flowers, the home is a peaceful and beautiful retreat.
Indian ruins are within walking distance. Do not forget to hike along the ancient arroyo to the Chama River.
Wildlife can be seen from the huge windows, which lend this home passive solar heat. Built on several levels this architectural home has beautiful fenestration which encompasses views from every angle.
Close by are the old Abiquiu pueblo, the non-excavated ruins of Poshuouinge, plus San Juan, Santa Clara and San Ildelfonso Pueblos.
Not to be missed are Ghost Ranch where Georgia O'Keeffe had her studio, Christ in the Desert Monastery, Abiquiu Lake, the Piedra Lumbre basin.
Colorful mesas give way to high mountains with Alpine meadows.
From late March through November the Georgia O'Keeffe house in Abiquiu is open for guided tours. Santa Fe and Taos are nearby for day trips. So are Chaco Canyon, Chama, Pagosa Springs, CO, Los Alamos and the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs.
You might want to come out when the cottonwood trees are yellow and orange during the annual Abiquiu Studio Tour (Columbus Day weekend) in October, or one week later for the El Rito Studio Tour.
All seasons in Northern New Mexico are sensational.

We had such a beautiful time at Lilyan and Chris's home. the views were vast and the property felt remote, which is exactly what we were looking for. There are so many wonderful places to spend time, both inside and outside the house. Lilyan was a wonderful host, providing lots of information and communication. We hope to return!
Home sat at the end of the road and had state land next to it, providing solitude and privacy. Enjoyed everything about our stay. Will be back
We found the home made a good base to do our exploring of the area. It was built with obvious attention to detail and purpose. Really enjoyed the fireplace, patio, and sauna outbuilding. The owner was upfront about the need to drive a little to get to better restaurant and retail choices and was responsive to our communications. Our reservation was a little last minute, so it appeared that the persons hired to maintain the property may not have had time to do a walk through before our stay. Overall it is well worth a visit and we appreciate the owners giving us the chance to have an enjoyable time there.
Beautiful home. Beautiful property. Owners very responsive. Had issue with hot water heater; no hot water. They responded in a few hours - telling me what to do. Hopefully they will include hot water heater glitch in their Guest Book. After it was remedied, hot water was perfect! Other issue: bugs, spiders in house. Even without opening windows. Learned to live with it. Part of country living. All in all - a great place to stay.
Very nice.
Lilyan & Chris' property epitomizes the reasons we all want to visit this area of the Spanish West. The classic adobe home sits on an idyllic property with unencumbered views to the horizons, the silence of the high desert, and natural landscapes in every direction. The home is very comfortable, the kitchen more than adequately stocked, and the sauna is an especially pleasing touch. We happened to be there during a frigid weather event and never felt the least bit chilled due to the radiant flooring and ample wood for the kiva fireplace. I highly recommend, but please treat this space with the respect it deserves. Wonderful job Lilyan!!
A wonderful place. Very comfortable for two couples. More than that would mean folks sleeping just in the common area which is OK for good sleepers I guess. Great hikes and landscapes all around. The crowning experience was using the sauna with our family.
Beautiful location with breathtaking views You can walk for miles in any direction as state property is literally at the property’s fence line. The setting is quiet and peaceful. The property includes a private sauna as well as wood for a kiva that keeps the home cozy in cooler months. We enjoyed several walks along arroyos and even to the Chama river which is difficult to access for the public. would highly recommend staying here.
The views in every direction from this house are splendid! We came to the area to paint landscapes, and never really needed to leave the comfort of the living room to see the constantly changing colors on the distant mesas and mountains. The house is comfortable and well supplied, and the helpful owner checked in with us to make sure everything was ok. Ghost Ranch, Plaza Blanca, and Abiquiu are nearby, and the chilli rellenos at El Farolito are to die for! Highly recommend this place.
Once you arrive here and experience the quiet and the incredible scenery and sunsets, you will thank yourself for having chosen this wonderful casa for your vacation destination! It is such a cool casa with lots of Southwest personality and good quality amenities. Very comfortable master suite with great bedding and big roomy master bath including walk in shower and very relaxing tub. Guest wing is also roomy, comfortable and private at the other end of the house. Kitchen and walk in pantry have everything you need for preparing food there at the casa if you like. You will definitely want to eat some of your meals out on the portal and take in the views and the pleasant fragrances of the high desert air! Did you see that it even has a big walk in dry sauna for those who are health minded? Plus it is a great central location for enjoying Abiquiu, Purple Adobe Lavender Farm, Georgia O'Keefe territory, Ghost Ranch, El Rito, Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs & Spa and more. The VRBO pictures are very nice, but there is really no way that pictures can capture the scenery, the setting, and how special this casa really is! Lilyan is a lovely and gracious hostess and could not be more helpful. If you are looking for some restful and rejuvenating downtime, you have made the right choice here! Being up on top of the mesa and at the very end of the road adjacent to the BLM land, this casa is in such a peaceful setting that the calming quiet will help to restore your soul! We personally cannot wait to go back!!!
