Stayed Sep 3, 2025We enjoyed our two and a half weeks in Rochechouart, despite some disappointing weather. The house, which was fairly simply furnished and a little on the dark side but well-equipped, was in a very peaceful, natural location, ideal for exploring the town and surrounding area. There are lots of good walks in the area which we enjoyed and it was also very relaxing and entertaining to sit by the river, listening to the water and watching the kingfishers, wagtails and coypu. The swimming pool was lovely. The temperature was consistently warm and was big enough to have a proper swim. It also had a reasonable sized shallow end which would be great for little ones. It was well maintained and cleaned regularly by the nice owners, who live in the neighbouring property but were not intrusive.

Stayed Aug 10, 2025We had a fabulous holiday here. 6 adults and 4 children ( ages 4-8) The pool entertained all of us plus the extensive grounds held all our little ones interests - seeing otters, fish, ducks as well as sheep and mountain goats. The short, steep walk up to Rochechouart was a daily start to our day ( the 4 year old managed it with ease) Up there we had a choice of morning coffee and cake at numerous coffee shops then the children played on the well equipped playground next to the Chateau. Our evenings were spent Bbqing in the back garden area as well as playing boules there. Later in the night we retired to the games room where we all enjoyed games of table tennis. Claire was a wonderful host. Always on hand but never intrusive. We highly recommend this outstanding property and made truly amazing family memories.

Stayed Aug 24, 2024We had a wonderful week in this stunning location. The accommodation is simple but well equipped and very clean. Its layout allows space to spread out and then come together at meal times, ideal for a family including young adults and their partners. Once there you don’t really need to use a car, beautiful ( slightly steep) short walk to the town and all it offers. The real worth of this place is the location, the natural surrounding, trees and water which attracts wildlife including otters, bats and so many butterflies. Thank you Claire for a wonderful week.

Stayed Aug 17, 2024The property is superb. Spread across 2 floors in a secluded old mill. One side you have a large garden and pool, the other side a small river and weir. There are plenty of places to sit and and eat and drink, depending on where the sun is. Pool was lovely and ideal for kids. River was great for fishing and exploring in canoes and SUP. The games room was huge, with ample table table tennis bats and balls. There is even a small path which takes you up to the picturesque town, or down a short road to a charming pub/restaurant by the river. The host was simply lovely and helpful, without being at all intruding. You can't really go wrong. (very few mozzies and wasps, which is great).

Stayed Aug 3, 2024This property is such a gem, we've had a wonderful stay here this week. Claire is an excellent host, there to answer questions and give advice about local attractions, but also gives you the space to relax in peace. Our children (ages 8-16) loved the pool and also fishing in the river, meaning we spent a lot of time relaxing at the house. The grounds are stunning and there's just so many different outside seating areas that it was still possible to find tranquility, even with 10 of us in the property. The walk up the steep path (in garden) leads you into the town within 10 mins for a visit to the bakery and the bars. There's a gem of a bar a 5 mins walk from the house (if you're willing to cross the river and then walk through a field). If you love the countryside, peace and tranquility, I would highly recommend this property.

Stayed Aug 7, 2023We had the most wonderful stay at la Mallerie where you can really enjoy the natural beauty and authentic charm of France. The location is so beautiful and you can fully switch off and enjoy the peace and tranquility. The setting is very private. The addition of the swimming pool was wonderful. The grounds have many areas where you can sit and relax or enjoy dinner. Table tennis was great. Our children loved the wildlife and animals and it was lovely having the goats and sheep to see daily. Alain was a wonderful help during our stay he was extremely helpful for anything we needed. Claire was also a lovely host very friendly and helpful. We were fortunate to visits during the festival that only occurs once every 7 years so the towns were beautifully decorated with bunting which was lovely to see we very much enjoyed walking into town for fresh bread and cakes daily. It takes about 20-25 mins casual stroll into town it is up a steep hill but very beautiful town. The supermarket is about a 10min drive away and you can get a huge choice of everything you need. Would recommend to anyone wanting to come away and recharge there batteries and relax and enjoy authentic living in France.

Stayed Jul 22, 2023We had a wonderful relaxing family holiday here. The house was very clean, comfortable, and well-equipped. The grounds and the pool were fantastic. We enjoyed watching the wildlife as did the teenage animals that came with us (when we could drag them away from the pool and excellent wifi coverage). The walk up to Rochechouart from the house was steep but well worth it (food at the Hotel de France was amazing and great value). Claire was an amazing and attentive, but not intrusive host and we will definitely be back. If you haven't gathered, we would recommend La Maillerie for any family holiday or a peaceful adult break.
