There is plenty of room to park your boat trailer onsite and take advantage of fresh-water rinse hose; close-by are marinas, fueling options, bait shops, fishing charters, and seafood retailers if needed.
A short drive away is the quaint Town of Cape Charles - with its long public beach and public fishing pier; restaurants and watering holes; art galleries and shops hosting works of many accomplished local artists; boutiques, antique and gift shops, etc. Kiptopeke State Park with it's boat ramps, parking and popular beach is also a short drive away.
There are numerous nearby services including a full-service grocery (which is about 10 minutes from the property). For nature enthusiasts, the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge and the Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge are minutes away. Day Trippers' choices include Chincoteague Island, NASA Wallops Flight Facility [you may get lucky during your stay and witness a launch!!], or catch the seasonal Ferry to unique, historic Tangier Island. The possibilities for fun are endless!!!
The location is excellent - around 10 minutes from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (designated “One of Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World” - how cool is that !), plus easy access from the Hampton Roads area.
Our Lower Eastern Shore area is family-friendly and I'll add safe - a place where people say 'Hi' when passing on the sidewalk or grocery aisle.
I have invested in high-quality disinfectant for surfaces and I always thoroughly clean each bathroom and the entire house between rentals. I block off an extra day between rentals to allow for thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the house.
We all are still talking about the beauty and hospitality shown to us during our stay. We can't wait to return in the future.
Our week at this property was so enjoyable. The home is furnished with all that you need to have a great stay and it was immaculate. The owner also gave suggestions about areas of interest to visit in the Cape Charles VA area. This is definitely a 5 star plus property. We will definitely stay here again when we visit the area.
We spent a wonderful week at Mockhorn Bay Retreat. The house and grounds were beautiful. The home had everything you could need for a visit. We did have a few days of intense rain and winds, but made the most of it. We enjoyed walking the property, kayaking, eating meals on the sun porch, and touring the ESVA. This was the perfect home base for our family!
MBR is just what the Dr. ordered! 5 star comfort inside in serene setting, with super hospitable owners.
The Mockhorn Bay Retreat is a gem! Our Host’s Jeanne, Roger and Mia were attentive and gracious. The Retreat is certainly a nature lovers paradise. Seated along the Atlantic coast on the Chesapeake peninsula of Virginia. Hidden from the main highway by farm fields and barrier trees, the cape cottage is nestled at the coast, quiet, serene and unfettered by civilization. The cottage is well appointed, clean, with wood floors, art, fashionable linens, and all you need for home dining and relaxed meals. The cottage encompasses views from all rooms along the eastern side facing the barrier island coast. The property allows one to capture sunrise through evening light into deep dark night shade for restful sleep. If you are a bird enthusiast this is a great place to experience the magical songs of both resident and migrating birds. Enjoy evenings at the pond and close the day with the conversations of the bullfrogs. A short drive to Cape Charles, North Hampton State Park and the northern barrier islands for eco tours of nature, birds and wild ponies. The Cheasapeake bridge to the Norfolk area is also conveniently close. Enjoy!
Mockhorn Bay Retreat is an excellent home base for exploring the area. Drinking coffee on the screened in porch, watching the sunrise was a perfect way to start the day. The days were filled with visiting Cape Charles, Chincoteague, Wallops facility, and many of the smaller quant towns all around MBR. After the day of exploring it was wonderful to come home and relax in the peace and quiet of MBR. Gigi and Roger were wonderful and we look forward to visiting again!
Mockhorn Bay Retreat is a special place. The combination of the beautiful natural setting, the charming home and the intriguing location of the VA Barrier Islands offers an amazing experience. GiGi is an incredible host, dedicated to insuring that guests are totally supported to enjoy their stay. The house is clean and comfortable and every detail is thoughtfully designed. There is intriguing art everywhere, a completely stocked kitchen, screened- in porch, with an every day spectacular sunrise and a clear night sky is an amazing display. of stars. Cape Charles is a charming town and the entire area offers an array of attractions from remote fishing villages to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens across the marvel of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. We had a wonderful time and would love to see MB in all seasons. Thank you GiGi. It was a gift to stay in this lovely home.
Gigi and Roger are amazing hosts! We can honestly say we have never stayed at a more beautiful or comfortable accommodation anywhere. Even rainy days with little to do we’re pleasant. Our hosts stocked both the kitchen and bathrooms with anything we needed and checked in regularly to see if we needed anything else. We were looking for a leisurely pace and evenings on the beach and that is what we found. For us the location was perfect with a pond and flock of resident egrets in the back and a view of Mockhorn bay. We needed to drive about 10 minutes to get to the beach and Cape Charles which worked for us. We thank Gigi for her delicious key lime pie. If we re ever in the Cape Charles area again we would hope to sta again at Mockhorn Bay Retreat?
This property was amazing. The house has everything you need for your stay. Gigi and Roger were very courteous hosts, checking in from time to time. They definitely go above and beyond for their guests! The town of Cape Charles is very clean and laid back, a must visit. Grocery store close by. We experienced deer, rabbits, a turtle, and numerous types of birds during our stay, secluded in the woods. Great view. Very warm and humid this time of year, so there were bugs outside, but again it's wooded with nearby water. Highly recommend!
This property was everything we were hoping it to be...perfect! The description private waterfront nature lovers' paradise is spot on. Gigi and Roger were absolutely wonderful as hosts. Very helpful, friendly, communicative and accommodating. We arrived early evening and were thrilled to see deer in the yard, horses in the pasture and a beautiful water view from the back porch - first the pond and then the bay. Mia (the dog) was a wonderful addition and occasional visitor. The back yard has numerous bluebird houses, so blue birds were plentiful. There were also many other birds for example hummingbirds, cardinal, ibis, and chickadee. The drive up to the home is gorgeously tree lined, the home itself is done very well and extremely clean. There is anything you'd need at your disposal. We thoroughly enjoyed walking the grounds, taking in nature, relaxing on the screened porch and exploring the eastern shore of Virginia. Cape Charles is a cute town about 6 miles away that has a beach, restaurants, and shops. Anything you might need is within easy driving distance. Although we've heard the sunrise is wonderful we never woke up in time for it, but did enjoy the sunset over the wheat field at the entrance to the property. It was also beautiful to watch the eastern sky change on the property during sunset. We were very sad to leave and hope to return in the near future. This property is highly recommended and something you don't want to miss as a nature lover.
What an amazing place, so quiet and peaceful. We can not wait to get back
