The resort grounds are well groomed with a 30x60 hot spring pool, sauna and two hot tubs which are heated by the natural hot springs & fire pit near the pool. The geothermal heating from the natural artesian hot springs heats the entire property (130 degree F and 200 gpm). Fishing, hunting, skiing, summer and winter recreation abound. There are beautiful mountain views even though it is tucked away for solitude and privacy. The resort property has a paved drive from the county road and is adjacent to forest service. This historic property holds the Legend of the Sleeping Child.
The beauty of this hot springs was first discovered by the Nez Perce Indians in the 1870's. Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce led his tribe out of the reservation and through the Lolo Pass into the Bitter Root Valley. In pursuit of Chief Joseph and his people were General Howard and a group of soldiers. Trying to avoid a confrontation, Chief Joseph split his tribe into smaller groups.

One such group traveled through what is now Sleeping Child Creek and, facing a possible battle, they left their infants by the hot springs. When they returned, the infants were safe and peacefully sleeping, protected by the natural hot springs. Thus, Sleeping Child Hot Springs was named.

Onsite recreation include; fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, billiards, snooker, ping pong, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard, BBQ, hot tub lounging, Croquet, Bocce Ball, fire pit, big screen TV, dancing, nature & sky watching

We welcome all age groups, but pets are not allowed. Sorry. This is a no smoking facility, your hosts will provide smoking areas for you to enjoy outside the main building.

We hope you will discover the joy and excitement that we who live in the Bitterroot Valley have known for years. It’s certainly no secret that this is “The Last Best Place”

We welcome you to stay with us soon, and discover what you can’t read in books or see in pictures.

I can't think of a better place to host a couple day retreat with friends and/or family. We had a large group of 20 people and there was room and space for everyone. More than ample supply of towels. Kitchen was adequately supplied with necessary utensils, pots, and pans. I have waited ten years to make this trip since I first discovered this place through friends. What a waste of ten years :) We could have been here multiple times by now. I am certain there will be numerus more outings!

The house and location were superb, but I booked the venue for the water. In my opinion, the VRBO listing lacked transparency and the facility lacked appropriate signage. Had I known that the water in the 30’ X 60’ pool would be unswimmably hot and, indeed, had an allowable maximum temperature of 106 degrees Fahrenheit (F), I wouldn’t have booked this VRBO. I expected the hot tubs to have hot water, but did not expect the pool to be as hot as the hot tubs. The hot springs facility did not display required signage listed in Circular FCS 3 warning of dangers associated with hot water and exclusion of children aged 5 and under from entering the pool/hot tubs with a water temperature over 100° F. (Note that manufactured hot tubs have a maximum temperature of 104 degrees F.) With hot springs water entering at 133° F, evidently, in the heat of summer, 24 hours between bookings to drain, clean and refill is not enough time for the water to cool to a comfortable temperature. Also note that the indoor domestic water for both hot and cold was hot. Draw your bath water half an hour before you bathe. The water pressure in the showers was weak so that jets dribbled. The lush green lawn pictured on VRBO is dry and yellow in summer. Lastly, Sleeping Child Hot Springs is required to have a calibrated thermometer in place available for patrons to check water temperature. I asked the host for a thermometer. She provided two. They gave different readings, so neither was reliable.

Our children, grandchildren, spouses and significant others had a wonderful time celebrating our eldest family member. We had everything we needed and the location was perfect for this once in a lifetime event.

This home is definitely not short on space! There is lots of room to gather as well as sneak away for a quiet moment. It is a bit of a throw back in decor but it worked well for us. There is no A/C which wouldn’t be an issue if the weather isn’t unseasonably hot. Our temps reached the mid to upper 90’s which made for a pretty warm house in the afternoon. Those temps also meant the hot springs pool was a bit too hot to get in except in the morning and evening but we just planned around that. Also be aware that the water in the house is also fed by the hot springs. And due to the heat wave that meant scalding showers. Especially if taken later in the day. Becci provided answers to all sorts of my questions prior to arrival. I asked for a phone number for texting shortly before arrival in order to facilitate faster replies and she was happy to provide that. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, especially having such a large space filled with all sorts of games to play together. Just be prepared for some things to be a bit more “rustic” than typical.
