Maussane-les-Alpilles, Provence - Alpes - Cote d'Azur
The two guest apartments are located at the home and studio of Elizabeth McAlpine and Jonathan Lane-Smith, the property was built in 2018 and designed by architect Laura Dewe Mathews, all three worked closely together to create a thoughtful space that allows a family home, studio and a welcoming rooms for guests. The property is situated in large gardens which include a swimming pool, shared courtyard, extensive potager, and wildflower meadow. Both apartments have there own entrances so that guests are able to come and go privately. Situated just on the edge of the beautiful and charming village of Maussane les Alpilles, which has a number of great restaurants and a great selection o independent food shops, including a butchers, fromagerie, fish shop and a wonderful fruit and vegetable shop as well as three boulangeries. There is a fantastic square surrounded by restaurants in the centre of the village, which has a wonderful atmosphere through the summer months.
The village is situated at the bottom of the Alpilles Mountains so there are truly breathtaking walks just on our doorstep. The property is situated just 20 min from the amazing town of Arles a great historic centre, which is blossoming with an exciting contemporary art scene with the building of a new art centre LUMA. There is also a large photographic festival Les Rencontres that runs through the summer. Avignon is a 45 minute drive from the property and has a TGV station as well as direct trains from St Pancreas London during the summer months. Marseille Airport is also a 45 min drive.
We are also able to accommodate groups of 4 if both the guest apartments are vacant.
We enjoyed our second visit to Lizzie and Jonathan’s beautifully designed apartment- -Sophisticated and pretty, with jasmine in bloom and breakfast on the terrace looking over garden beds. Thank you Jonathan for delivering daily croissants! Their suggestions re vineyards and restaurants are excellent; Maison Druout in particular should not be missed. We walked into Maussane once, otherwise drove; because of the large free parking lots at several places in town that was never a problem. Love Mausanne, and love L’Escargot!
Lovely British hosts have created a little paradise, with gardens and a pool (which I enjoyed despite Jonathan’s correct description of it as “brisk” in May.) Interior design is contemporary and beautiful, making excellent use of space. We enjoyed breakfast on the terrace looking over the gardens, and hosts left 2 perfect croissants on our outdoor table every morning. Perfectly possible to walk into Maussane, though we usually drove- Maussane has lots of good free parking. Easy drives to Les Baux, Saint Remy, and the Camargue. Thank you Lizzy and Jonathan!
