Tower Grove Park
This wooded Victorian strolling park rewards meandering. Its 340 kinds of trees could chart every shade of green, and they attract 200 kinds of birds, from red-shafted flickers and monk parakeets to ospreys and ring-billed gulls. Henry Shaw developed the park to give St. Louis “a grand pleasure ground,” with wide lanes for horse-drawn carriages, gates guarded by zinc griffins, and exotic pavilions and gazebos. Every few feet, there’s something to see: lions copied from the tomb of Pope Clement XIII, heroic sculptures (Shakespeare’s here), busts (including Mozart), and antiquities (columns from the Old Courthouse and stone “ruins” from the old Lindell Hotel, reflected in one of the most picturesque ponds in St. Louis). Park officials also recently uncovered a long-forgotten stream on the park's east side, accenting it with rain gardens and native plants on either side.

Also right on the other side of the park is the Grand Avenue strip - which is full of eclectic shops and amazing eateries - many of which serve authentic Asian & Middle-Eastern cuisines, along with classic American favorites.

Cute and cozy! It is much smaller than it looks in the pictures though, especially the shower. We could also hear the people above us walking pretty well (they did provide earplugs & white noise machine though!) and the window was open without our knowledge the first night, causing it to be very cold. Still a great stay overall!

I waited a week to be sure this is objective and unemotional. Usually I post constructive suggestions for improvement in a private message to the host. In this case, I’m posting a public negative rating to protect the integrity of the VRBO listing system.Property description inaccurate. Good points:Near Botanical Gardens.Quirky fox theme.Price.BUT far outweighed by the bad:Access from street is hard. Steps up, wobbly handrail, more steps down. Very unkempt entry. Dirty steps. Door needs paint. Concrete uneven, loose plaster. Steps down next to big mess! No light switch inside entry door; flashlight needed to find switch for other room. Almost tripped where step down just before finding switch.Misleading description: Should say HALF kitchen. Shocked no stove or toaster; tiny fridge. Thick frost ate up space. Water dripping into fridge. In listing photo, mistook fridge for dishwasher. Listing: “air conditioned.” Unable to find thermostat; contacted host. Replied promptly: a/c controls upstairs in other unit. Contact host; he’ll adjust temp! (not even in property’s guest handbook) First night cold; next day asked for raise of 2 degrees. Reply well after in bed—unable to get the remote to work—sorry.Housekeeping poor. Large cockroach in shower. Closet floor dirty. Vacant space next to shower full of hair dust. Lighted make-up mirror dusty. No tissue, NO SPARE TOILET PAPER! Had to ration the one roll. Unforgivable!Very memorable, but never going back!

Cute, clean, and cozy! The host is very responsive and communicates with ease and efficiency! There is a beautiful botanical garden within walking distance plus some shops and cafes. It is close by to alot of attractions. They do have scooters available but unfortunately we did not utilize. The only downfall was the upstairs renters being loud late night/early morning but for only a short period. 10/10, would stay again and would recommend!

The rental was super cute and very clean. It was located in a great spot. It was close to a lot of attractions. Host responds back promptly. Especially when we asked to adjust the air temperature. Some of the ceiling are low, with the air vents. If you are over 6 feet tall, you may have to duck.

Cute, but only for 2. Pros: Clean and all in working order. In the incredible Shaw neighborhood. Within easy walking distance to food, coffee, and Tower Grove Park. Responsive hosts. Cons: Not appropriate for more than 2 adults. 4 of us stayed and it was cramped. The “sofa bed” is a child-sized Ikea piece with thin foam cushions that fold out to a double-sized “bed.” Host did try to warn us. Unfortunately no thermostat access, and not enough blankets to warm up in the arctic temperature. Tiny bathroom and shower stall that would not accommodate large bodies. Overall, I would maybe stay again, but only by myself or with my spouse.

We enjoyed our stay at the fox den for a weekend! Property was very close to downtown St. Louis and the neighborhood was very homey. The check in and check out process was smooth. The decorations were very cute and the property was small but homey. It was perfect for my husband and I. It was very easy to hear the tenants footsteps and voices upstairs. Luckily we didn’t spend a whole lot of time there during the day and it really wasn’t an issue overnight. They do provide earplugs and an Alexa to play white noise so that is nice. Overall, had a good stay here and would recommend to a couple for a short term stay!

The Fox Den is a cozy, quaint place to stay. It is in a great location. However, it is for small or short people only, as there is not much headroom for somebody six feet tall or somebody who is of wide girth. It is well decorated but it is rather small space.

If I had known this would be a basement apartment, I would not selected it with all the recent and forecasted rain. The apartment was too cold for me to be comfortable. I needed to know how far the residence was from the train station, but he did not respond to my email until after I arrived. The people upstairs has several children and everyone including the adults were all very noisy. Between the noise and the cold, I got very little sleep during my stay. I was miserable. This was not worth what I paid for it. Next time, I will get a hotel.

This place was very cute! The noise of upstairs tenants is a little intense so I don’t recommend if you’re a light sleeper. However the location was great and we had no trouble with surrounding guests and natives. It was uniquely decorated and cozy. I will say the floors were a tad dirty, and there were cobwebs on the ceiling and window sills. Also the shower is extremely small and leaky. All small issues and we enjoyed our 2 night stay!

The property and neighborhood are great and as advertised. Some items to note: I am 6 foot 3 inches tall, this is a basement unit and some of the air ducts are at 6 feet causing me to duck all during the stay. Plus the shower is very small not allowing you to bend down to wash your legs very well. There also is no toaster in the unit. We could live with all these items, but gave 4 stars instead of 5 because of it. The unit is decorated very nicely.

I stayed one night at the Fox's Den with my 17 year old son. It was uncomfortable from the very first moment we stepped in - complete darkness with no indication of where the light switches could be located (far from the entrance, on the other side of the room). The space is a lot smaller than the photos make it seem. The hosts have certainly taken a lot of care in branding this listing, as there are tons of foxes and woodland accessories, but very little attention paid to the actual comfort of the guests. The pull-out sofa is tiny and strange, and you have to move furniture to make it into a bed. There are a million rules posted everywhere, but no meaningful instructions, like how to work the televisions or how to keep the shower from leaking. Neither of the televisions would turn on, which was disappointing after a long day of driving. The host stopped responding to my questions directly after we checked in. The last impression of the place was that the host didn't communicate that I would get a parking violation for parking in front of the house on the first Wednesday of the month, which is apparently street cleaning day. As a person traveling from out of state there was no way for me to know about this situation. So, I now have to pay a fine that could have been avoided very easily with a quick heads-up. Over all our stay was very annoying. Would not recommend.
