Fenareti's house is located in a small village of Apokoronas in Chania. The calmness of the village in combination with the beauty of the nature make the accommodation really pleasing. The house has a special architectural style as it is built amphitheatrically on the roots of a mountain and its spaces are shaped in different levels. The main construction materials of the house are wood and stones, offering a unique sense of relaxation and tranquillity.

At its about 130 sqm Fenareti offers a big sitting room with fireplace and two stone sofas, a full comforted kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. At the lower level of the house is located the second bedroom with beautiful view at the sea and the village's champaign.

Fenareti's house is available all year round. The property is ideal for couples, families and groups of friends who look for something special and want to avoid clamorousness towns and live the traditional way of life at a traditional Crete village.

Apokoronas brief history: Apokoronas is one of the five provinces of Chania Prefecture, in its Northeastern part. During the ancient times the word 'Apokoronas' is not at all mentioned. The only thing names that are mentioned are those of the villages of the province. During the Byzantine Era there is a reference of the name of the region as a village. As a Province it is referred to the Venetian Occupation of Crete, however, without knowing the exact limits of the area at that time. As a toponymy it is mentioned as 'Apikonna' in the Convention between the Byzantine General Vatatzis and the Duke of Crete Ioustiani in 1236.

Neo Horio and nearby: Neo Horio, 24km from the town of Chania, rests comfortably against the side of a hill overlooking a lush valley of olive and orange groves. Its name means 'New village', and that because it was built in the ruins of a village destroyed by invaders of Crete. In the center of the village several 'kafeneia' (coffee shops) are located who serve coffes, refreshments and drinks, and from the evening the bake the most famous souvlaki in Crete!
From the top of Neo Horio, if you look northwards over the valley you can see the azure waters of the Mediterranean, about 4km away, glimmering under the glory of the sun. There lies the coastal village of Kalyves. However, nestled in the valley between Kalyves and Neo Horio lies the village of Armenous with its famous underground springs of water, and its traditional restaurants

Fenareti's House-How to get there: The house's name was taken by the landlady's name, Fenareti. Also, famous Greek philosopher Sokrates' mother name was Fenareti. Fenareti’ s House constructed in 1780, at the centre of Neo Horio. It was built in three levels according to the slope of the ground. In 1993 it was refurbished by the present owners with respect to the landscape and the environment. We have stayed here on previous occasions. As before we had a very enjoyable time. The house was spotless and there was plenty of room with everything in working order. Location was very good with lovely views. All in all a very pleasant experience.

Living and sleeping areas on 4 levels. Two bathrooms with basic amenities. Supplies for breakfast were helpfullly provided! Lovely traditional decor throughout. Two outdoor terraces with nice views of the valley below. Walking distance to Neo Chorio village down the hill. Helpful and friendly host who drove back to the house from Chania without complaint when we locked ourselves out by accident. Excellent cleaning service midway through our stay. Drawback: Stairs to lower bedroom have no rails, and bathrooms are on levels above--hard to manage at night. Parking is available but tight, and the access road to the house is narrow. Overall, a nice place to stay, off the beaten track.

Loved the location and the house, especially the patio. Great little garden. Georgia who met us was great and we enjoyed the supplies provided. For Americans, the bed for 2 is a small double. Other beds are singles. Also there are stair steps into every room in the house and no rails. Not good for children or unsteady folks.

We had a great holiday in this apartment in a traditional Cretan village. It is lovely and spacious and has a large sunny terrace with a lemon tree and shady grapevine and a wonderful view. Kalyves is a nice little seaside town just a few minutes away by car and has several good seafront retaurants and sandy beaches. The nearby town of Chania is also very picturesque and with a beautiful harbour and there are plenty of places to go in this part of Crete: spectacular beaches, a water park and ancient sites. The Fenareti's were very hospitable and helpful and cleaned the apartment for us regularly.

This is the second time we have stayed here. The house is ideally situated for Kalives,Chania and of course Nio Chorio for a meal and drinks. The owners are very friendly and always at the end of a telephone if needed. We have had a great time here and would thoroughly recommend it.Always left on the table on arrival is local olive oil, raki, fruit etc.Just sitting on the terrace overlooking the village and out to sea, what a way to relax.

At first I should mention that all information given through internet, written in the house or verbaly by the owners was accurate and very helpful. The location and house' s facilities were perfect and ideal for an unforgetable trip to Crete. The accommodation was clean and tidy and also well-maintained (plus nicely furnished and full equipped). The owners provided us excellent service: very helpful with their instructions finding the house, they picked us up from the village center, they offered us seasonal fruits and wine and they change the linen without made us feel that an invader disrupted our peace. I have already recommended Fenareti' s House to my friends and relatives and my brother has made a reservation for next May! I find Fenareti' s House ideal for nature-lovers and people who enjoy walking and cycling. Someone can find nice local taverns (serving souvlaki in Neo Chorio) and restaurants (Cretan cusine) in Neo Chorio and the surroundings. Do not miss visit the nearby villages: Armeni (with natural springs), Vamos (with the renewal settlement), Kokkino Chorio (with a family industry of perfect blow-made glass items) etc!

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful stay at Fenareti's house over Christmas 2009-2010. The listing description and photos are accurate, and the property was clean and well maintained. Our hosts were very helpful and generous in their provision of local produce, firewood and assistance. We were lucky with the weather for that time of year and enjoyed many sunny, quiet days on the patio, with its beautiful view. The house is close to coastal towns and the national highway, and it was easy to visit Chania and Rethymnon on day trips. The nights were cool and the house was chilly, but there was a good fireplace and ample supplies of dry firewood. The house would benefit from central heating for the bedrooms in the winter months. And it would be helpful to have internet access and a small music system. We would recommend this property for a quiet stay in a beautiful area of western Crete.
