Waimanalo, Hawaii
Nalo Cottage is a two room garden cottage, a half block from one of the best beaches in Hawaii. It is located in a quiet neighborhood still evocative of old Hawaii. The comfortable cottage has ten foot ceilings and approximately 760 square feet of living space. Each room has a separately controlled ductless air conditioner.
The cottage is at the rear of a property of slightly more than a quarter acre. The cottage is equipped with wifi, basic cable tv, linens, bath towels, beach towels, beach chairs, umbrellas and toys, boogie boards, and miscellaneous snorkeling equipment in various sizes. It has its own Weber bar-b-que and private patio. The washer and dryer is shared use. We provide a starter kit of paper goods and cleaning supplies.
We regret at this time, due to restrictions imposed by the Honolulu City Council to limit short term vacation rentals, we cannot accept bookings for less than 30 days. Guests, however, are not required to stay the entire 30 days.
We spent six years looking throughout the Hawaiian Islands for a place to call home and fell in love with Waimanalo. It is not a tourist area and retains the character of a Hawaiian town. Our neighbors are friendly and we respect them. The spectacular white sand beach is uncrowded and protected from commercial activity. Waimanalo is predominantly agricultural. There are many farms and nurseries across the highway from us on the mountain side. Waimanalo's produce and eggs are justly famous. But we are still able to attend concerts and cultural events in Honolulu, explore Oahu's great culinary scene, snorkel in Hanauma Bay, hike to the lighthouse, walk in the botanical gardens at the University of Hawaii, go shopping occasionally, and have access to great medical care. All these are easy to do from our home. Honolulu and Waikiki are 30 minutes away, and Kailua 15 minutes, by car.
There is plenty of free parking in the driveway.
We cannot accommodate smoking anywhere on the property.
A word about critters, who love the tropics as much as we do: The cottage is professionally cleaned before each guest arrives. We occasionally get small ants, geckos, or even a cockroach in the cottage. We use a non-toxic environmentally safe spray in the cottage. Periodically, we will spray the exterior with Raid or similar product. If you leave food out, you will have visitors.
The cleaning fee includes a second cleaning midway through your stay.
My wife and I stayed at Hal and Terry's cottage for a month in Sept/Oct, 2022. It was perfect for the two of us - very quiet, spacious, lovely patio area, friendly neighbors, close to everything on the windward side, and only 40 mins to Honolulu. Can't imagine a more perfect place for our needs.
Everything about this listing was just perfect! Description and photos were 100% accurate. Hosts are welcoming and very accommodating, friendly but at the same time provide guests with space and privacy. The cottage is chic and simple while providing everything needed - full kitchen supplies, new and updated appliances, beach chairs and towels, umbrellas, cooler, and boogie board. Location is breezy and AC is often not needed, but available throughout the cottage. And beach is a 5 minute walk away! We thoroughly enjoyed every minute and plan to return!
Excellent spot for an extended Hawaiian vacation. When vacation rentals can only be 30 days or more, you better be sure to pick a good one, and the Arnold's Nalo Cottage was just that. Location: windward side, away from Honolulu city but only 30 minutes away. One half block from one of the best beaches on Oahu: 5 miles of very fine sand, plenty of shade, waves good for boogie boarding (not so good for relaxing swimming). Great little eatery (Ono's) within walking distance. 7 miles to Kailua, a sizable town with all manner of shopping and restaurants Facilities: very well equipped 3 rooms plus bath. Comfortable bed, plenty of closet and dresser space. Well stocked kitchen. great outdoor eating and lounging area surrounded by tropical fruit trees: banana, citrus, papaya, etc. Plenty of beach accessories (chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, snorkel gear, etc, etc) Hospitality: our hosts greeted us on arrival and explained how all the electronics and appliances worked then left the next day for their own vacation on the mainland. They were very responsive to our few questions while they were gone. Upon their return they were gracious and helpful. Bottom line: you can't go wrong at the Arnold's Nalo cottage.
Was the perfect place for us, close to Kaimanalo Beach, quiet neighborhood even with a rooster, lovely hosts and a garden to enjoy whenever we sat out with family for dinner.
Hal and Terry were lovely. They dealt rapidly with any issue that came up. The cottage is very nicely done up and has more of a quality of a home than a rental. Lots of thoughtful details. The garden has a tropical feel. There was plenty of space to host family and friends; the Weber BBQ was great, as were the large colorful umbrellas to provide respite from the sun. Terry pulled out the beach toys (we had already bought some of our own so ended up using our own...but she has a large tub full) for our grandkids. It was roughly a 3 minute walk to the beach, v. easy beach access. The walk from the beach is also beautiful, as the hills are spectacular. Easily the most beautiful beach on the island...soft sand, shade if you go under the trees that border the beach...stunning morning walks as the sun rises or sets, uncrowded and unspoiled... The air conditioning in the cottage worked well. No dishwasher, no garbage disposal and limited space to clean dishes but this was not an issue for us. Granite counter top, newer fridge worked very well. nice selection of pots to cook from, and well stocked tools for cooking. Great choices of glass/plates, etc. Celebratory. The washer and dryer area outside the main house and a big plus for us. Target is a 10 to 15 minute drive away, as is Whole Foods. Quiet location with a 'family' feel neighborhood. We would not hesitate to rent this cottage in the future.
Terri & Hal are great people. We really enjoyed getting to visit with them and staying at their property. It was everything they advertised. Everything we needed to make our 30th anniversary trip special was provided. Stayed 30 days and there was plenty of room. It is decorated so cute with a beach feel. Very comfortable king size bed and large closet, air conditioning (although don’t need it too often due to lots of windows & breeze) full kitchen with everything and large walk-in shower plus a jetted tub. Great patio outside area surrounded by all types of tropical plants. Even had papaya and banana trees and large grill and outdoor lighting. Not a beach view but you definitely feel like you are in Hawaii when you’re outside with all the plants. Beach access is literally at the end of the street. About 7 houses down. So close. And this beautiful beach was never crowded in this area, not even Memorial Day weekend. There were people but you didn’t feel like you were right next to them like on Waikiki Beach. This beach is a hidden gem. This is a neighborhood so you feel like a local. A lot of days I could see maybe 10 people on the beach, depending on the time of day. Not a touristy area (which is what we wanted) but so close to Kailua. Also, the last couple of days we didn’t have a car so we took the bus to Kailua and then again to Waikiki. The bus stop is at the end of the street so it was very easy access. Loved that they also provided beach chairs, beach towels, ice chest, umbrella, beach blanket, boogie boards & a wagon for it all. We also had access to washer and dryer which was great. BBQ with their uncle Peter & family was fun. We will definitely be back and stay here. We felt like it was our home away.
My husband and I were very comfortable renting this cottage for 31 days in January 2021. It is a spacious cottage with very high ceilings that is simply but tastefully decorated and very clean. The bed is firm, but we found it comfortable. The a/c units were the most comfortable I have experienced with no noise and no cycles of freezing air. This rental has a large beautiful semi-private patio with shade umbrellas for dining and lounging and enjoying the beautiful flora and fauna. The gate and entry walkway walk past Hal and Teri's main house porch and deck so we are both aware of each other when we come and go. Hal and Teri are easy-going and available when needed, but are very respectful of their guests privacy. For one week of the month, two of our grown kids and our 1 year-old granddaughter came to stay with us in the cottage. We set the baby playpen up in our bedroom and her parents slept on folding mattresses in the living room. (They have a sleeper sofa but Teri offered these more comfortable mattresses) Teri provided all the baby things we needed, including indoor and outdoor toys! As others have mentioned, the way the cottage is designed, there is no sound privacy within the cottage, but we learned that if we closed the windows and doors, the cottage itself is very sound insulated from the outside. Our granddaughter needed one long daytime nap and we mostly enjoyed reading and playing card games outside while she napped. The Waimanalo neighborhood is comfortable, homey, friendly, and diverse. We loved it! The new Kalapawai deli and coffee, Ono's steak and shrimp shack, 7- eleven and bob's market (a tiny store) was about a 6 block walk (or drive) away and we grabbed to-go meals more often than we had planned because it was so easy and delicious! The location is ideal. We have visited Oahu before and we love the windy side of the island. We enjoyed daily walks on the beautiful beach, walks in the neighborhood, several hikes, beaches and lookouts within a 15 minute drive away. We also enjoyed going to Kailua (15 min) for anything else we could possibly need as well as the farmers markets there on Thursday evening and Sunday morning. The Hawaii Kai neighborhood 20 minutes the other direction had a Costco and some nice restaurants (we loved the water-side dining at Liko's Tap and Table). I highly recommend this place. Thank you Hal and Teri!
Hal and Terri were exceptional hosts. We enjoyed our chats and meals with them. SO thankful to Terri for letting my husband help with gardening. The cottage and garden were an absolute joy to spend time in. And a perfect location, a block away from an awesome beach. Would absolutely recommend this place.
My wife and I spent five nights here for our honeymoon. Great accommodations and plenty of space for living in. The hosts were absent during our stay, but their uncle was staying in the main house on the property and he had tons of recommendations and helpful tips for us! Also the cottage is in a great location. It’s not too long of a drive to go to Waikiki, but also easy access up the eastern coast and to the north shore. Highly recommend this place to stay!
This cottage was exactly as pictured. We loved it!!! Only a short walk to very private, big beach. Easy to carry beach stuff provided by owner; there is also a wagon to use. Beach has sun and shade. Yard and lanai are wonderful for morning coffee and evening cocktails. Very safe and quiet neighborhood. Would definitely recommend to family and friends. Book this one with no worries!!!
