San Cristobal, New Mexico
Situated on two acres of the San Cristobal Creek valley, 15 miles north of Taos, 29 Spotted Owl offers a splendid setting at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Views to the east are of the alpine heart of the Taos Ski Valley, to the west of the Taos Plateau and high desert that surrounds the Rio Grande Gorge.
Spotted Owl is perfect for those wanting to combine the cultural and culinary pleasures of Taos and skiing in the Taos Ski Valley, which lies some 15 miles east, and world class hiking in the Wild Rivers Recreation Area, about 15 miles north. Lying within the boundaries of the Carson National Forest, the village of San Cristobal also offers a trailhead for a scenic hike into the Columbine Hondo Wilderness Study Area, which features some of the best hiking in the Sangre de Cristos.
The 1,052-square-foot adobe dwelling itself is nestled in a beautifully landscaped slice of the creek valley, just down the ridge line from the D.H. Lawrence Ranch, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Surrounded by sage brush and wildflowers in the spring and summer and snow pack in winter, Spotted Owl is an artfully appointed getaway for a couple or two wanting to drink in the ambiance of northern New Mexico in any season.
A central living, dining and kitchen area features a wood burning stove plus a kiva fire place to snuggle up to. An expanse of windows open to two walled courtyards and an open sitting area shaded in the spring and summer by the colorful foliage of native trees and the brilliant blooms of purple aster, hollyhocks, purple sage and many more. Each of the two bedrooms and baths, located on either side of the common area, includes a top quality king sized bed with all cotton sheets as well as cozy down comforters. Off of the southern patio, a courtyard has a two- person hot tub to soothe aching muscles and, on a clear night, offers a planetarium-like view of the starry sky, undiminished by the city lights of Taos.
Along with the landscaping and wood-burning stove, the passive solar design of the house- complete with thick adobe walls, heated Saltillo tile floors, ceiling fans and south-facing windows- ensures a cozy and comfortable retreat year-round.

Highly recommend this lovely, well-maintained, well-appointed home with mountain views. Make sure you soak in the hot tub after your hike -- heavenly. Thanks to Patti for being so responsive to our questions. We can't wait to come back!
Beautiful property and location in a wonderful community.
We have stayed in the Taos area 9 times now and we enjoyed this rental more than any of the others. The cottage is well sited and laid out with lovely views into the back yard and mountains beyond. It is a very peaceful place, comfortably furnished and tastefully appointed with nice touches throughout.
This wonderful home was so cozy. It has extremely comfortable beds and a fully equipped kitchen. The fireplaces added ambiance to this comfortable country home and it is decorated so beautifully. My husband and 2 pups enjoyed our stay.
Very nice place. An issue arose with the hot water system and the owner took prompt action to deal with it.
We had a great time in the cottage. Loved the decor. Owner was responsive to any questions we may have had. It was quiet, the hot tub was a plus and the beds are very comfortable.
My husband, dog and I stayed for a week here while dividing our time between Red River and Taos (it is pretty close to the mid point between the two towns). The adobe house is lovely and very comfortable. Kitchen was very well stocked, including spices. We cooked a meal there everyday and needed nothing (other than the food). The views are beautiful. We would definitely stay here again. I enjoyed the courtyards and the desert flowers around the house.
The house is very nice. We especially liked the two enclosed courtyards which allowed for us to let our dogs be with us outside while we relaxed or looked up at the star-filled sky. We found plenty to do in the Taos area for a week long vacation, and it was great to have a home away from home. We highly recommend this adobe cottage which is convenient to everything the area has to offer yet away from the bustle of Taos itself.
Host was really great to work with. Very fast to respond to our needs Thanks for everything
Enjoyed the quiet, the sunrises and sunsets. Was over way to soon.
We loved this house. The obvious part is that the house is a gorgeous adobe in a beautiful setting with fantastic views. Gorgeous art and furnishings, comfortable beds. The bathrooms have wonderful toiletries and towels. The thing I thought they excelled at was that the kitchen had every spice and pot and pan anyone could need. As everyone already mentioned, there's a super nice hot tub and patios, as well as a heated floor that keeps the house warm in single digit temperatures. Finally, the house is ideally located, equidistant (20 minute drive) to downtown Taos and beautiful hikes (Wild Rivers Recreation Area).
Great communication, easy check in, clean and cozy house and lots of privacy. Highly recommend!
A lovely and comfortable home beautifully decorated for the holidays! A very special place with a scenic drive to Taos.
This Cabin was perfect for our needs, the location is in the San Cristobal valley near the mountains. the property is well cared for and we enjoyed the hot tub in the evenings after hiking in the mountain. We will be back soon!
This Adobe cottage was more than we anticipated. Patti had everything & more than anyone could need in a rental. It was cozy, clean & comfy. The gardens & dark skies were my favs! We didn't want to leave! But we know we'll return to this little slice of paradise.
This property is the most beautiful place we have ever stayed at. The home is absolutely exquisite, the beds are very comfortable, and it is quietly located a short distance from Taos. The hot tub is perfect for two and the outside garden/seating is private and lovely. We will definitely stay again.
We had no problems in renting property. We enjoyed the Beautiful Sunsets every Evening!! We had a Good Time! Neighbors We’re most Friendly! Enjoyed talking to them!
My spouse and I have been traveling across the country this summer, and we've stayed in several vacation rentals along the way, but this adobe cottage was our favorite by far—maybe ever! Both bedrooms had desks (a big plus for us), the beds were amazingly comfortable, the living room with its big leather couch was cozy, and the kitchen was well-stocked for cooking. We had breakfast in the front courtyard and enjoyed the stars in the two-person hot tub in the back. This cottage was spacious with plenty of room to relax. Patti, the host, was available via email to answer all our questions and offered suggestions of restaurants to try and excellent hikes to take—Little Arsenic Springs: go early and bring plenty of water and snacks; Williams Lake— it's a ways to the lake in high elevation but definitely worth it!) Our suggestion: leave some time to explore Arroyo Seco, which is a small artists' town nearby. I hope that we get a chance to stay here again next summer. We loved this place!
The highlights began before we walked in the front door. The owners were responsive, organized, and accommodating. We really lucked out and got those Northern New Mexico summer showers almost every day. The birds, the temperatures, the smells made the environment a 10. We went for walks, met neighbors, and got out to see everything the area has to offer. We fell in love with paintings by local artist Jeff Cochran, and Carrie Schultz so we bought paintings from both of them. The little adobe home kept us cool when it was warm outside and warm when the temps dropped. We slept with all the windows open and boy oh boy was the sleeping grand on the beautiful mattresses and bedding that the host equipped the home with. We even brought our dog with us who cried when it was time to go back to Arizona. We'll be regulars here at this little house. Can't wait to come back in the fall.
Fabulous accommodation in lovely San Cristobal Valley north of Taos. The wonderful 2003 film Off the Map with Joan Allen was our link to this special area. Especially loved the sporty two-seater hot tub... at dawn, at dusk, moonrise, when storm's brewing, after a hike. You get the drift. Outside patios with plantings were a pleasure. The casita is spacious and comfy, never hot on a mid-summer day.
Couldn’t ask for more. The house was better stocked than my own and the neighbors were amazingly friendly and the property manager responsive and full of hospitality. We have booked again and can’t wait to be back
