Volcano, Hawaii
The cottage is built 6 feet above ground on the front side (with 14 stairs up to the front door) and at ground level on the back side. It is all wood and glass with open beam construction. It’s tucked into mostly native forest of Hawaiian Ohia and Hapu’u (Hawaii Tree Fern) that is glorious in the mountain sun. This little cottage has ten large picture windows to give it a beautiful, expansive, tree-top view of the surrounding trees and vibrant plant life. It has one bedroom with a queen size bed, a sitting room with an expansive outdoor view and a small bathroom with a tub/shower. There is an open veranda part way around the cottage as well as a back deck to relax and enjoy the late afternoon sun. The entire cottage is about 850 sq. ft. Very comfortable and spacious for two people.
There is a TV screen (no cable TV) and DVD player in the sitting room for you to enjoy movies in the evening after a day of exploring. There is a gas fireplace in the sitting room for great ambience and for those cold mountain evenings.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a 4-burner propane stove top, toaster oven, microwave oven, under-counter small size fridge and all basic kitchen utensils & supplies. We also provide the basic supplies in the pantry such as salt, pepper, organic olive oil, organic honey, sugar, organic coffee, tea bags and filtered drinking water.
This is our own retreat cottage. We love it. We hope you'll enjoy it and care for it as we do. It is a place for quiet contemplation and meditative retreat with a feeling of serenity both inside and outside. We want our guests to experience the magic of Hawaii.
Whether you decide to visit with us or not,
we send you our Aloha,
Richard and Candice
This cottage up in the trees is lovely and secluded, while being located just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The owners are very responsive and helpful, and provide lots of little extras, like heated towels and fresh local honey. We loved it there!
The setting is beautiful and relaxing, the home is charming and comfortable, and the proximity to the National Park is perfect. It was everything I wanted it to be.
It was great. Period. Not sure that I can say anything unique that hasn't already been said. There are 4 guest comment books there that rave about the place going back (I think) to 2013. Felt like home. We stayed a month. Hosts were absolutely wonderful. Not a - section of - a wall in the place that doesn't have a window/view to the beautiful lush forest. Better than I expected. Car port is wonderful for loading and unloading. There are stairs to the front door if mobility is a consideration. Two outdoor seating patios. A yard to wander around. Feels like a tree house.
My wife and I stayed here for five nights during our honeymoon, and we absolutely loved it. At the end of our stay, we wished we didn't have to leave so soon. All in all, an ideal location for a private, romantic getaway.
We had an amazing month-long stay at Volcano Haven. The house was absolutely beautiful. Despite being in a neighborhood, the trees and surrounding rainforest made it seem like we were completely isolated. The little down of Volcano was adorable, and we were only 5 minutes from the entrance to Volcano National Park. Candice and Richard thought of everything in the home. We had everything we needed. Not to mention, the bed was extremely comfortable! Thank you so much, Candice and Richard, for such a lovely stay!
This cottage was such an incredible place to call home for a month. The neighborhood is beautiful and friendly while still offering privacy from nearby neighbors in the form of gorgeous foliage. The communication and recommendations of the hosts was an incredible guide for the time I spent on The Big Island. The property is generously spacious both inside the cottage as well the surrounding yard. I enjoyed cooking here and reading near the fireplace on rainy days. Easy to access from the main highway and a perfect home base for your stay. It's even better than the listing can express if you can believe it! If you are seeking retreat, solace, privacy, and/or rest this is a once in a lifetime find. Thank you to Candice and Richard for not only offering a house, but a home.
This cozy but elegant retreat was the perfect introduction to the Big Island.
We absolutely loved this cottage! We wanted something completely different than the beach feel on the Kona side of the island and this was perfect! We stayed for 3 nights and I wish we had stayed longer. It was so calm and peaceful, it felt like our own little place in the rain forest. The home was clean and had everything we needed. They even have binders with all the info you might need for your stay in Volcano and visiting the Volcano National Park. It was perfect and we'd love to go back again. I'd highly recommend it to all my friends!
If you are looking for a place away from people yet 30 minutes from hilo and 3 from volcano national park this place is perfect for two people. You will be welcomed by the sound of native birds singing in the forest. The house is spotless and everything is well labeled. Communication was top notch. Candice and Richard went out of their way to make sure were happy. We will be returning at some point and will definately rent this property again.
Perfect Volcano get away!! We are already planning our next trip!! The meticulous detail with which she takes care of her guests is unbeatable!! The home is so beautiful and convenient.
I have stayed in Volcano village many times over the past years, in both homes and picturesque lodges. Wherever you are in this special place in the world, you can feel its spiritual power (mana in Hawaiian), being so near Kilauea crater, the home of Madame Pele. That being said, Volcano Mountain Haven, so beautifully tended by Candice and Richard, is by far the most beautifully-situated, peaceful and condusive to creativity (I was there 5 days on a personal writer's retreat) of all the homes I have stayed in over the years. (And would no doubt have been among the most romantic if I had shared that time with a spouse or partner. :). I recommend it enthusiastically and with absolutely no reservation, and will undoubtedly return there again, if Candice and Richard permit :). I should also share that when I was not writing, I enjoyed reading ALL the guest entries in their guestbook over the past 4-5 years, and can attest that there is not a single entry with a critical or formative comment or suggestion. It appears that everyone' s expectations for their stay at the Haven were completely met and almost always surpassed. And the themes that appeared over and over again in the guest entries were ones with which I completely agreed: First, although you are part of a small neighborhood near the village center and just 2-3 miles from the national park entrance, the Haven is completely surrounded by hapu'u tree ferns and blossoming 'ohia trees and no other homes are visible, only greenery and flowers. And the silence is amazing. The songs of the birds wakening in the morning only underscore the peacefulness all around. When you arrive and enter the Haven (great detailed instructions are provided--nothing is left to guesswork) you are struck by all the thoughtful and welcoming touches left for you by Candice and Richard -- the macadamia chocolates, local coffee (before I arrived, Candice texted, Would you prefer beans or ground?!), a jar of rare white honey produced by bees raised by Richard up the Hamakua Coast, the beautiful stones set on windowsills around the home -- each one I'm sure with its own story, and so many practical items anticipating my needs around cooking, hiking, touring around the island, community events etc. I wanted for nothing -- but if there had been anything I needed, I knew Candice would be immediately available to provide guidance. For my needs, the Haven was ideal in every way.
Delightful hospitality and a beautifully designed, sustainable and comfortable building. We would love to return one day.
