Enjoy spectacular ocean views from this oceanfront century-home tucked away along The Lighthouse Route, on the picturesque south shore of Nova Scotia. Ideal for nature lovers, artists, couples, or families seeking calm and coastal charm. The house has been home to generations of local families, with recent renovations and repairs designed to increase comfort without sacrificing character.

This property is approximately 50 meters from the road, and is accessed by a private lane which slopes through the trees and gently down to the house, barn and garden shed which sit at sea level. Local vegetation provides complete privacy while the front of the house is just meters from the bay of Shag Harbour (distance depending on the tide!).

Depending on the time of year, you may see fishing boats in the distance, going to and from the wharves at Shag Harbour. The Municipality of Barrington is the Lobster Capital of Canada with the lobster season running from late November to the end of May. Other species (fish and shellfish) are fished locally through the year. Fresh seafood can be purchased at many of the local fish plants.

You may catch sight of seaweed being harvested in the cove in the late summer/fall by fishers in outboard boats that come close to shore to rake the seaweed from the rocks - locally referred to as Mossing.

Several small islands are in the bay. The most well known would be Bon Portage Island which is home to the light house where author Evelyn Richardson lived with her family for many years, while keeping the light with her husband, Morrill. It is often possible to find a local fisher who is willing to take visitors for a boat tour around the islands.

The area is famous for its many sandy white beaches, many of which are a short drive from Stoddard Cottage. There are also several trails in the county which include views of the rugged coastline and a variety of shore birds. Cape Sable Island is less than a 10 minute drive and is an important birding area.

Whether you are looking for a spot to totally relax and unwind with the smell of the ocean and the quiet stillness of the property, or for places to hike and explore beaches and shorelines, both can be found here in southern Nova Scotia.
