This 200 year-old cottage is stepped in history - John Flynn, who lost his life in the HMS Titanic tragedy in 1912, was born and reared here. Indeed, it was from here he set off to Cobh, Co. Cork, just a few days before boarding the ill-fated ship.
The cottage fell into disrepair after John' sister Bridget passed away in 1925. The roof caved in and it looked as if the house would be lost forever. However, owner Michael Walsh has lovingly renovated and extended it in recent years, and, indeed, in 2012, a Titanic commemoration took place at the property.
We have renovated and modernised the cottage while retaining all the key original features. . All mod cons have been installed but the home still boasts many of the essential characteristics of the traditional Irish cottage in a beautiful north Connemara location. - it is rural, it is one floor in height and the open plan kitchen/living/sitting room area is the heart of the property.
Adjacent to world-renowned Ashford Castle and the surrounding lake district.,
In this cottage, the old meets the new.
John's story is lovingly recalled in the property. His memory will never die.
Emigration claimed many Irish people throughout successive generations. This part of the world suffered more than most. These days, it is our pleasure to welcome back ancestors of those who had to leave.
Live the Titanic story in this historic cottage.

More about John Flynn: In the late 1800s, he emigrated to Pittsburgh, USA, like so many of his friends and relations. He found work in the steel mills and married a neighbour from home, Mary Cassidy from Dooras, Corr na Mona, on August 26th,1891. They reared six children.
In 1912, John was holidaying at home here in this home when he got a sudden letter urging him to return to the USA. It has never been established if that letter related to work or family matters, but John went to the local shipping agent in Clonbur, bought his ticket, walked the ten miles to Ballinrobe Railway Station and made his way down country to Cohh to get on board the Titanic.
His body was never found. It later emerged that his sister-in-law had wanted to return to America with him to join her sister, but her family forbade her from doing so - an intervention that almost certainly saved her life.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Teach Titanic cottage. It was thoughtfully renovated keeping some of the original elements of the old historic cottage yet thoroughly modernizing it. Michael did a wonderful job incorporating the history of the cottage. The home was impeccably clean and comfortable. We will be back! Thank you Michael!

Beautifully appointed Irish cottage - renovated to a high modern standard - with everything you could want to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. There are documented historic links to the Titanic on display - as the original owner, John Flynn, lost his life when returning to America on board the ship. The cottage is a few kms outside Cong in a rural setting, so you would need a car to get around - but for us the location was perfect!

Titanic cottage was exactly what we'd hoped for: quiet, comfortable and well located. It took five minutes to reach the village of Clonbur with it's pubs and grocery. Micheal's thoughtful restoration of the cottage shows in every detail. The cottage was easy to be comfortable in. As a base to explore the Connemara peninsula it is ideal. Michael showed us the property and was easily reached if needed. Walking on the quiet road was a twice daily exercise for us. Can recommend this cottage without reservation.

Lovely property. The owner is very attentive and happy to assist. The cottage is located in a great spot for touring the area. It has all the amenities and comforts for a wonderful stay. It’s located on a nice quiet road and yet isn’t far from everything you need. The beds are amazingly comfy! We really loved being able to make peat fires in the evening. The kitchen is fully equipped and check in/out was super quick and easy.

My friend and I were looking for a place off the beaten path where we could relax and immerse ourselves in the Irish countryside. Our one month stay at Teich Titanic far exceeded our expectations! The cottage is located between the villages of Cong and Clonbur and has nearby hiking trails to both. The cottage is on a 2 mile long road lined with beautiful farms with amazing stone walls and lots of sheep, cows, and horses to visit. By car, we were able to enjoy day trips to Galway, Westport, Cork, Sligo, Adare, and the Connemara Coast. The cottage itself is beautifully renovated and offers old world appeal along with modern amenities. The cottage section was perfect for relaxing with a good book. Its historic connection to the Titanic makes for interesting reading. The modern addition to the cottage consists of 2 bedrooms each with its own bathroom; offering plenty of privacy. Michael is an excellent host. He promptly answered any questions we had and supplies everything that you need. Now that our trip to Ireland has ended, we couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else. We look forward to going back!

If you’re looking to escape the world and step into a serene space look no further. Titanic cottage is a perfect mix of old world charm and modern amenities/aesthetics. It was the perfect escape—quiet, removed from the hubbub, but still close to restaurants and other conveniences. It was also the perfect location for making day trips to the most breathtaking scenery (Wild Atlantic Way, Connemara Valley drive, cliffs, etc.). We had everything we needed—and nothing we didn’t. We found the cottage spotless, and were touched to find a loaf of fresh bread and milk waiting for us. Michael was the most gracious of hosts. He was there to welcome us, and introduce us to the cottage. But also there to support us throughout our visit (answering questions, offering recommendations). He gave us space but was also a warm and welcoming presence whenever we needed it. We cannot recommend this cottage (and its owner!) highly enough. Our time there was a precious gift and we will always be grateful.

The Walsh's home is a perfect haven. Everything was exactly as noted with beautiful details to all the remodeling done. The location is on a relatively quiet road that is about 2 miles from end to end and makes a perfect walk in the AM or PM. You may have a few sheep or others who demand a photo or two. Short distance to Cong and Ballinrobe, Oughterard, and Maam area are lovely to explore. Michael stays in contact as needed as well as gives you space to explore. I will return, hopefully!

Our stay at Titanic Cottage was immeasurably enhanced by the thoughtful touches in the updated property and the generosity and kindness of the owner, Michael, who greeted us upon our arrival. Michael made sure we had plenty of wood on cool nights and was available any time of day to answer our questions about how appliances work, where to purchase provisions, and to direct us to places of local interest. We were charmed that people we met on our travels in the area knew Michael and felt warmly towards him. The cottage is sunny & handsomely restored to modern standards with updated kitchen appliances and it’s blessed with a washing machine AND a dryer. The living quarters - two bedrooms, an ensuite bathroom, a guest bathroom and a utility room - are lovely and are attached to the main cottage by an artfully enclosed walkway. The rooms are tastefully decorated with plenty of closet space. The furnishings are not overly fussy and much attention was paid to details including window treatments of local muted plaid fabric. Cong is a charming little village with a fine butcher shop and a delightful bookstore devoted to Irish history. We spent 11 days at the historic Titanic Cottage and enjoyed every minute of it. We brought proper rain gear and footwear so the weather never impeded our activities including hiking and biking. We have been staying in self-catering homes for over 25 years. This cottage is among the top 2 or 3 we have visited. We recommend it unreservedly.

We have had a brilliant week reuniting with family in Ireland and the cottage has been an excellent base. After searching through many holiday cottages, this one stood out online and we were not disappointed. It is a beautiful mix of old and new. It was spotlessly clean and had many touches which we really appreciated such as white towels, plenty of quality hangers and wardrobe space and super comfy beds. We would highly recommend this cottage and we will definitely be back! Thank you Michael.

We cannot say enough good about this property - it was perfect in every way. In the country on a quiet lane, but close enough to town for dinner and supplies. The cottage is beautifully updated and has a most interesting history. Michael is a wonderful host, and always there when you need him
