Nevada City, California
The Two Room Inn is your own charming Victorian cottage in the heart of Nevada City, a beautiful, historically preserved gold rush era town in the Sierra foothills. Step back in time ....just two and half hours from San Francisco.
This beautiful, unique home was built in 1880 as a miner's cabin. Around the turn of the last century it was converted into a residence. At some time in its history it was a rectory and then late in the 20th century it was renovated yet again, took on its present 'castle' look, and was known as the Teddy Bear Castle due to the owners' large collection of antique teddy bears which were also the basis of the American Victorian Museum at the Miners Foundry in the 1980's. Lovingly restored to its present Victorian splendor and completed updated in 2004, it is now a perfect little Gothic Victorian gem from which to explore all that Nevada City and the environs have to offer. Walk out your front door, through the garden, and out the front gate, and you will find yourself in an amazing Victorian town, with beautiful historic homes, cafes, shops, galleries, wineries, and restaurants to suit every taste, all within a few blocks of your own beautiful cottage. Stroll around town and enjoy the ambiance, the art ( Nevada City has long been a haven for artists), the shops, and the mountain scenery. Stop for a coffee, breakfast or lunch maybe right across the street at the Broad Street Cafe, a snack at one of the yoghurt or ice cream shops, have lunch or dinner in one of the wonderful eateries in town, or come back to your own charming place and cook dinner at home. A short drive will bring you to the wonders of the Sierra foothills and the gold rush era. Beautiful scenery, pristine forests, river crossings with amazing swimming spots, hiking trails, and historic gold mining towns, some still with residents, some with only the local ghosts roaming the streets.
Spring, summer, and fall are gorgeous for outdoor activities. The fall foliage is magnificent, and winter brings its own charms. Nevada City's famous Victorian Christmas celebrated throughout the month of December, draws visitors from all over. And the occasional snowfall blankets the town and countryside in white. Skiing is only an hour or so away, up Interstate 80 towards Truckee. If you want a more temperate climate to stay in and not have to go too far to ski, Nevada City is the perfect spot. If golf is your passion, there are three championship golf courses in Grass Valley and Auburn, just a short drive from the Inn.
Nevada City, and it's close neighbor, Grass Valley, another vibrant historic town, host a wide variety of cultural activities all year long. There are music and art festivals, fairs, the Nevada City Fourth of July Parade, and the famous Nevada City Bike Race held in downtown Nevada City each year on Father's Day. The North Columbia Story Telling Festival, also held every year, has gained wide notoriety and draws folks from all over to hear some of the country's best storytellers. North Columbia, just a short drive from Nevada City, is a former gold rush town, now just a crossroads with the old two room schoolhouse converted to a community center as the venue for the festival. Check the local chamber of commerce web site for the schedules of all the events in the area.
Whether you come for two or three days or a week or more, you will never lack for things to do, and you will always have your beautiful Victorian cottage to come home to. The cottage is fully equipped with all modern amenities, updated and modernized bathrooms and a full modern kitchen, heat and air conditioning, flat screen TV, WiFi, gas grill, washer/dryer, and two off-street parking spaces. But it also has all original stained glass windows imported from England, gorgeous redwood and elm interior, a fireplace built with cobblestones from Old San Francisco, a front deck surrounded by gardens, a private back yard, and a lovely balcony off the bedroom upstairs, with views down Broad Street - the perfect spot from which to watch the 4th of July parade, the Father's Day bike race, or just the comings and goings of Nevada City. The house is situated at the very edge of the commercial district, and so in the quiet part of town, but steps away from anything you might want to do in the village itself.
Come experience the unique charms of this lovely home and its wonderful surroundings.
We also have a special, mid-week (Sunday to Thursday) one night rate for two people, of $300, inclusive of everything. Please contact the owner to book this special rate.
***Please note - Cancellation policy includes a full refund if the house can be rented to another party.
The cottage is beautiful inside and out. The stained glass and Victorian furnishings made it really memorable. It was right in town, walking distance (a couple of blocks) to our dinner reservation. The management was very friendly and helpful, going out of their way to make sure my Dad retrieved his laptop when he accidentally left it at checkout. Our only hiccup was that we arrived in a snowstorm, and the heater took several hours to warm the place. There were plenty of blankets in the meantime. I would definitely stay there again.
This property is extremely unique and has an interesting history. The owner was easy to contact. Nevada city and Grass Valley have excellent shopping. What more could you want.
This is really a marvelous little place to stay. It's right in town, but quiet and private. We had a great time. Thank you!
What an absolutely lovely little place! Everything had such charm! The neighborhood is really sweet and has a ton of adorable shops! We’ll be back for sure!
Perfect location, beautiful, spacious!
Two Room Inn is at the top of Broad Street in Nevada City, in the heart of the historic downtown. It's a Victorian building with charming interior and exterior, including many stained glass windows (we wonder if it was previously associated with the church next door, as a residence or hall). You can look out the windows or sit on the porch and watch Broad Street activity, or face into the garden with redwood trees. The furnishings are very comfortable and well-maintained, yet completely appropriate to the Victorian ambience. Kitchen is well-stocked with dishes and everything needed if you want to cook or just make a pot of tea. There's a modern washer and dryer, refrigerator, and gas stove. Bed in the attic bedroom is comfortable and cozy -- and overall, we never needed to change the pre-set temps for the heating, even though we were visiting as a cold storm front arrived. We were toasty! Modern fixtures in the bathrooms including shower/tub upstairs with modern tiling. Communications with the owner were great. Highly recommended.
A true gem in Nevada City. You can’t find a better location or more charm. The owner and property manager were both very responsive. I’d like to see better twin beds, this ol’ body does not do well on squeaky trundle bed. I love this house though, it is truly very special.
the place was beautiful!!!!!! able to watch participants of the event from the balcony. absolutely adorable and comfortable!!!!!
This is a very beautiful place, exciting to spend a special occasion with my family. We bring guitars, play and sing out in the lovely back patio. Every room and every detail is so nice.
We so enjoyed our stay in this quaint church/apartment. The stained glass was beautiful. The best things about this place were the character of the building, the kindness of the owner & manager, and most of all, the location. It was so easy to walk everywhere. Also the location gives you a view of the downtown. We would definitely stay here again.
This is the perfect location to experience Nevada City! The home is gorgeous and if you love what you see online, you will be amazed when you see it in person. I plan on returning next year.
all good
This house has so much character from the beautiful stained glass to the decor. Will be back and remember to bring coffee
The property was stunningly beautiful (stained glass in every room!) and incredibly comfortable. The location can’t be beat - walking distance to delicious restaurants and cafes along with beautiful hikes to the creek. My kids ask me weekly when we can go back.
Two years ago, this house caught my eye when my husband and I were visiting my sister-In-law and were walking around Nevada City. I was so excited to see it was available for us to book for our spring break trip this year, and I could not have been more pleased with our stay! We loved the historical charm, stained glass windows, large master bedroom, and location. Marney was also extremely easy to communicate with! We will definitely stay here again when we visit!
The perfect getaway spot! Such a unique and charming property, with everything we needed. Walking distance to all of downtown. So relaxing and hope to return.
House full of personality and great garden & patios for relaxing with local coffee or beer. Hilly but walkable town with vast food variety from fresh bakery, pizza, crepes and sushi just a block to two away.
We loved the Two Rooms Inn. Such a beautiful property, great history, very comfortable. Everything we wanted- and even got a little snow our second day, which made Nevada City a winter wonderland!! Would definitely return again...
