Nature and environment

Nature and environment
Our Wâldhûske is quietly and freely situated in a protected landscape - the heart of the Northern Friesian Forests. The area is characterized by ancient tree walls that radiate the cozy atmosphere of a forest area. The flora and fauna is diverse and exuberant. You are awakened in the morning by a magnificent concert of the many species of songbirds that occur here. On the north side of the village Jistrum, on a 300 year old sandy path you will find this cottage. The sand path lies in an area with - especially around Jistrum - many more sandy roads suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding in Friesland. At a distance of five kilometers you will find the marina with boathouse on the Bergumermeer. Nearby, on the lake, there is a public swimming area with sunbathing area, beach and jetty. In the area, the water sports and nature village Earnewâld is very worthwhile. You can take a cruise through a swamp area, the national park De Alde Feanen. You will find, among other things, cormorants, storks, spoonbills and if you are lucky otters. Beautiful historic cities are Dokkum and Leeuwarden. A day trip to one of the Wadden Islands is also recommended.

Our cottage offers space for three people.

History
Already on a grietenijkaart from 1694 we find a Vogelkooy with our cottage at the address of the Heideweg in Eestrum. There is still a duck pond on our site. a remnant of the original duck cage.
In 1996, the former owner behind the old wâldhûske built a modern house under architecture in the style of a wooden haycake. In 2007 we bought it and after that the old house was completely renovated in rustic style.

The cottage was very well decorated and thought out. It was in a very quiet and beautiful area. We loved our time there.

We arrived a little early, but the house was clean and all ready for us, and exactly as described on the website. Yneke and Peter made us very welcome, as did Foxy the dog, and the weather was very kind too. It Koaihus has been very tastefully restored and modernised, but the ladder-style staircase might be a problem for anyone with limited mobility, while a joy for the younger generation. The kitchen is well-equipped, and we cooked dinner every evening. We visited the the National Park 'De Alde Feanen', Leeuwarden, the Frisian coast and the nearby Aqua Zoo, which were all quiet in late April. Overall, a very pleasant and restful post-Easter break for the two of us.

We spent a happy week cycling, mostly from the house, to visit all the pretty, local canal-filled towns and villages. It is 'low key', but we found lots to do - particularly at the nearby national park and the northern islands. The house itself was a relaxing base, and the owners very helpful.
