SCHOOLHOUSE HISTORY
1891 was the first year the bell rang from the belfry atop the new, one-room Cottonwood schoolhouse in Brown County, summoning children from the nearby village of Cornelius to class each morning. In the dead of winter, scholars trudged up the snowy hill from Cornelius to fire-up the pot-bellied stove and study their ABCs and ciphers. A lot has changed since then. Like Brigadoon, the village of Cornelius vanished. The schoolhouse closed in the mid ‘50s and stood vacant until 1983. It had been used to store hay until a pastor bought it for his weekend retreat. When he passed away, a new buyer, Dennis Parman, decided to give the old school a new lease on life. —Dave Horn Herald-Times Homes
Now, owned by Leah Lamm the 1891 Schoolhouse Inn is a successful Airbnb welcoming visitors to a chic getaway — through preserved original details like buffed heart pine flooring; wainscoting; tall, wavy-glass windows; and the 1891 belfry with bell still intact. Surrounded by woods and butterfly gardens on a peaceful acre of Morgantown land, the two-bedroom inn earns and “A” for location, just far enough away from the traffic of downtown Nashville and its nearby state park. Accommodation check in at just under 1,000 square feet, but live large thanks to an airy great room. If you do need to plug in, high-speed fiber-optic internet is available with conference call capabilities, a rarity in rural Brown County. In short, this schoolhouse rocks. —Amy Lynch Indianapolis Monthly Cozy Cabin Edition
Located in the scenic hills of Brown County, the dog-friendly inn is a gateway to Nashville’s galleries, restaurants, antique shops and more, as well as the surrounding natural area, one of the prettiest parts of Indiana, a haven for fishing, hiking and cycling. Brown County is particularly beautiful in fall, so if peace and serenity is what you’re after, the 1891 Schoolhouse Inn can teach you a thing or two. —Ellen Creager Columbus Monthly Great Escapes
Beautiful experience
Absolutely loved this property and the management team! They were great to work with, communicated effectively, and definitely have more to offer than the pictures. Perfect little cabin, decorated and fitted for a lovely, intimate weekend for my girlfriend’s birthday. Loved the amenities and provisions the host provided and greatly appreciated all they did to make this a wonderful stay. Absolutely looking forward to staying there again! Highly recommend!!!
The property is perfect to enjoy some down time. The location is secluded and quiet. We enjoyed everything about our stay. We spent some time shopping in nearby Nashville. The shops and local artesians were amazing and the food was good. I would definitely recommend the property.
Really a great place to enjoy a pretty stay inside and out with charm and history. We just loved it.
This property was charming and clean, with tons of attention to the little details. My husband and I visited for a couple of days to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. The location was remote enough to allow for quiet relaxation, but close enough to Brown County State Park and Nashville to make it easy to run out to grab breakfast, go shopping, or explore the park. We hope to return again in the future. Thanks for a great stay!
15 from town and private. Cozy 2 level, 2 bedroom with a TV downstairs. Games to play, hot tub to enjoy and a gas flat top grill ready to use. Little extras in the kitchen for you to enjoy and IGA (grocery) is about 15 minutes away also. Buy firewood 2 miles away for your fire pit and you can grab a pizza there too. Great place for 2 - 4 people.
Booked through Vrbo. Then received rental agreement from property manager. Lots of restrictions regarding dogs. Would not have booked had I know upfront. Place was great though. Also, was charged an additional pet fee for second dog, after the fact, with no notification. So my stay was an extra $85 after I had already indicated the correct number of dogs and paid the indicated amount through vrbo. This is not my fault and I feel as though they should have eaten the extra fee. They also need to update the Vrbo listing to include the pet restrictions.
The schoolhouse inn was charming, restored thoughtfully and appointed tastefully. The property was woodsy and secluded. It was quiet. We brought our dog and she loved it. We will return.
We loved the beauty of the trees and the cabin was lovely. We stayed for graduation weekend so we didn’t get to enjoy the game room or paddle boat much, and only wish we had more time. Hot tub was great! . So for drawback, it is far from Bloomington, not really Nashville as it was 35 minutes to IU. And the only other drawback was the open loft so not much quiet/privacy for sleeping as any noise echoes up. The covered front porch was really nice and we liked the back enclosed sunroom as well. Our host was responsive and even left us grad treats so that was really a nice touch!
Very nice place
Great stay, perfect house for our anniversary getaway. Love the decor, and was very clean! Much appreciate the hospitality and we will definitely be back when we can get away for a weekend again!
The 1891 Schoolhouse Inn was the perfect getaway for us. Is has everything that you could need for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect for exploring Brown County. The deck and hot tub were very enjoyable. We would easily stay there again when in the area.
QWe loved our stay at the Schoolhouse Inn. You can tell the cabin was lovingly restored with perfect period pieces, and communication with the host was always quick and friendly. It was a bit further out than we realized, but the drive back to town in Nashville was easy.
Took a long weekend trip to Nashville area with husband and our pup Mia. Loved the school house. Inviting and comfortable. Would definitely stay again
Booked visit with short notice. Listing was 100% accurate. Due to an unforeseeable incident involving a storm that had passed through the day prior one of the amenities of the property was not working correctly. Someone sent out very quickly to fix the problem. Other than that one hiccup our stay was enjoyable and relaxing. Exactly what we needed. Will definitely book again soon.
The schoolhouse provides such a unique experience if you're seeking peace and restoration while still having television and wifi. All amenities were provided and it felt very cozy. The bedroom windows face east so you can lay in bed and watch the sunrise. It's about a 15 minute drive to Nashville which wasn't bad once you learn which roads to take and which ones not to. We really enjoyed our stay here.
This place was such a wonderful place to visit. The school house was decorated to the T for Christmas. We enjoyed every part of staying there, and so did our four-legged boys. We will definitely come back!! It’s the best place to stay in Nashville that we have ever been to!
What a special place! We loved it! The furnishings, decor, and special Christmas touches were perfect!
Lovely home and property.
Nice relaxing get away
Very nice property! Response time was awesome. Thank you!
Adjacent to Bloomington/Nashville/Indy. Went to McCormicks Creek - Brown County - and the 500 race and this was the launching pad. Good Times.
When the kids were at camp, we decided to stay close by rather than making the long drive home. I was charmed by the historic character of the schoolhouse. It’s so cozy! We used and enjoyed everything: the kitchen (well equipped), the hot tub (so relaxing!), the wi-fi (no worries, it’s quite fast!) and the grill. We had a bit of an issue with the grill not heating completely, but we brought it to the manager’s attention and had a solution the next day. Thank you for creating such a unique hideaway. We will be back!!
We had a great time staying at the Schoolhouse! It was so clean, and they had lots of little surprise extras like farm fresh eggs and coffee! It was so cute and the decor was adorable. We would love to stay here again!
